Samantha Lewthwaite Born: 5 December 1983 From: County Down, Northern Ireland, UK • Also known as Sherafiyah Lewthwaite or the White Widow. • She is one of the Western world's most wanted terrorism suspects. • She was married to the 7/7 bomber Germaine Lindsay. • In September 2013, she may have been involved in an attack on a shopping centre in Kenya where gunmen killed 67 and injured 175 innocent people. Osama Bin Laden • This photograph shows Osama Bin Laden with his adviser Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri. • His family is one of the richest families in Saudi Arabia. • Osama Bin Laden was the leader of Al Qaeda. • He was responsible for planning terrorist attacks in many counties, including the September 11th attacks in 2001 where planes flew into the twin towers building in New York. Nelson Mandela • He was leader of the African National Congress (ANC). • The ANC fought against the government in South Africa in which white people ran the country and black people were second-class citizens. • To begin with they protested peacefully but they were attacked by the police. • They then used violent protest attacking government buildings. Later they also killed people in bomb attacks. • He spent 26 years in prison. He was released in 1990. • In 1994 he became President of South Africa. Martin McGuiness • One of the leaders of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). • First they took part in peaceful protest. • They wanted Catholics to have equal rights with Protestants. • They also wanted one country; a united Ireland. • In 1972, 14 Catholics taking part in a peaceful demonstration were shot dead by British soldiers. • After this, the IRA took part in a campaign of violence including shootings and bombings. • In 1998, Martin McGuiness turned from violence to peace. He worked with the British Government and other leaders to put an end to violence. Sarah Whitehead, 53, Nicole Vosper, 22, Thomas Harris, 27, Jason Mullan, 32, and Nicola Tapping, 29, • All members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty. • They took part in a campaign of ‘violence and terror’ against companies and individuals linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences. • They posted hoax bombs to homes and offices, made threats of violence and daubed abusive graffiti on property. They wanted to close down the firm's animal testing lab. • They were given prison sentences of between 15 months and 6 years. Anders Behring Breivik • On July 22 2011, he set off a bomb outside the offices of the Prime Minister in Oslo the capital of Norway. • The bomb killed 8 people. • He then killed 66 young people taking part in a Labour party youth camp. • He said his actions were ‘atrocious but necessary’. • He hated Muslims and saw himself as a Christian knight stopping ‘the tide of Muslim immigration into Europe’ Darren Osborne At midnight on June 19, 2017, he drove his van into a group of worshippers coming out of Finsbury Park Mosque in London. One man died and 11 were injured in the attack. He was charged with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder. Witnesses heard him say ‘I want to kill all Muslims. This is for London Bridge . You deserve it’. On February 2018 he was convicted of ‘terrorist murder’ and sent to prison for 43 years. Emmeline Pankhurst • In Britain, over 100 years ago, only men could vote in elections. • Emmeline was the leader of the Suffragettes who demanded ‘votes for women’. • They started their campaign with peaceful protests and many women were arrested and sent to prison. • The suffragettes then took violent action including smashing windows of expensive shops and important buildings. They set fire to churches and cricket and golf clubs that did not allow women members. • In 1918, a new law was passed giving women the right to vote and stand in elections. Al Bagdadi • He is the leader of the so called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). • In 2014 Abu Bakr al Baghdadi said that he was creating a worldwide caliphate with himself as the Caliph. • The Caliph is both the religious and political leader of an Islamic state which is known as the Caliphate. • ISIS, or IS, is fighting the national armies of both Syria and Iraq. • In a video uploaded to YouTube in July 2014 he asked Muslims from around the world to join him in the fight to create the caliphate or carry out attacks in their own countries. Guy Fawkes • In 1605 he tried to murder the king of England, King James in the ‘gunpowder plot’. • King James was a Protestant. Guy Fawkes was a Catholic and he wanted England to become a Catholic country again. • Guy Fawkes was discovered before he could set fire to the gunpowder in the cellars under the Houses of Lords..
