Sylvia Plath's work and thought is responsive to Jungian analysis, and her poetry is examined within this framework, utilisation being made of her prose writings as additional evidence of that responsiveness. The hypothesis is that the process of individuation can be traced through the use of certain archetypal elements in her literary oeuvre, and that she used that oeuvre as a method of constructing her identity. As an introduction, the position of the woman writer within a male-dominated society and its effect on Plath's work is discussed, together with her search for identity as exemplified in her use of the subjective speaker. Consideration is given to Plath's probable literary sources for the archetypal elements of stone, of water, and of rebirth, such sources being Arnold's 'The Forsaken Merman', Shakespeare's The Tempest, and certain of Plato's works, texts which are found to have exerted a profound influence on the poet. Plath's use and development of these archetypal elements is traced throughout her work, attention being paid to the interpretation she placed on such elements. In addition to his psychological writings, Jung's autobiography, Memories, Dreams and Reflections, is a source of reference since the archetypal elements are evident in that work. Detailed analysis is undertaken on two long poetic sequences, 'Poem for a Birthday' and the bee poems: both are held to be significant, not only in Plath's poetic development, but also as evidence of her passage through individuation: these sequences illustrate Plath's use of the theme of rebirth. Finally, specific aspects of Jungian symbolism are examined, and rebirth is considered in a wider context. Plath's suicide is discussed in the Epilogue. (Jung 1941, p. 177) This is part of Jung's introduction to his essay 'Psychology and Literature'; Langbaum, in his discussion of 'complete criticism' argues that it 'is legitimate . to use literature as a source for studying the nature of the creative process and thus of the mind.' (Langbaum 1970, p. 16). This conjoining of psychology and literature is part of the foundation of my thesis. In examining Sylvia Plath's literary texts I endeavour to trace some of the mental processes involved in the creation of those texts, and as a theoretical base, I directed my attention towards the central concept of Jung's psychology, 'the process of individuation' (Jung 1963, p. 200), a process of maturation. I came to perceive, through my study of Jung's writings, that Plath's use of certain imagery, specifically images of stone and of water, corresponded to similar images which occurred in his patients' dreams and drawings. A reading of his autobiography, Memories, Dreams and Reflections, wherein Jung himself uses such images, reinforced my belief in the possibility of using a Jungian model to interpret Plath's texts. Jung discusses the process of individuation in Part Two of Two Essays on Analytical Psychology, Volume 7 of the Collected Works,' and offers the following definition: -8- Individuation means becoming 8 single, homogeneous being, and, in so far as "individuality" embraces our innermost, last, and incomparable uniqueness, it also implies becoming one's own self. We could therefore translate individuation as "coming to selfhood" or "self-realization." (Yung 7, p. 171) There are a number of assumptions contained within this quotation: that there is a single self to be discovered; that each individual is unique; that the process of individuation can lead to self-discovery. I return to the matter of assumptions in a later section of this chapter, but offer the above in order that some understanding of individuation may be gained. I discuss lung's theories in greater detail in the relevant chapters. For Jung, the process of individuation is a natural transformation involving a 'rebirth' of the individual. In his essay 'The Psychology of Rebirth' (Tung 9_, Part 1, pp. 116 - 134) he discusses two groups of transformation experience, 'that of the transcendence of life, and that of one's own transformation.' (lung ibid. p. 117) Under this latter experience, among others, he lists that of natural transformation (individuation) (Yung ibid. p. 130), of which he writes: • . in addition to the technical processes of transformation [discussed earlier] there are also natural transformations. All ideas of rebirth are founded on this fact. (Jung ibid. p. 130) To engage in the process of individuation is, in part, to seek a rebirth of oneself. Of one particular case study, Yung notes: . there was a long-drawn-out process of inner transformation and rebirth into another being. This "other being" is the other person in ourselves--that larger and -9- greater personality maturing within us . (Jung ibid. p. 131) Jung uses the term 'collective unconscious' to denote a layer of the unconscious which 'is not individual but universal' (Jung ibid. p. 3) and whereas the contents of the personal unconscious 'constitute the personal and private side of psychic life', the contents of the collective unconscious 'are known as archetypes.' (Jung ibid. p. 4) I introduce these terms at this point because images of stone and of water are, in Jung's schema, archetypal images, as is the theme of rebirth. I discuss these archetypal elements in greater detail in the relevant chapters. I believe it is possible to trace Sylvia Plath's engagement in the natural process of maturation through her use of the theme of rebirth in her work, end to trace her affinity with Jungian thought through her use of images of the stone and of water, together with the theme of rebirth.

It is through primordial images that universal archetypes are experienced and the unconscious is revealed. In “The Waste Land” the central theme of sterility is expressed through the central myth of ‘death-rebirth archetype’ very minutely. Eliot uses the mythic mode with the archetypal approach in “The Waste Land”. This paper tries to capture this mythic sensibility, in its limited way, as expressed in “The Waste Land”. Keywords death, rebirth, sterility 58 Nandi Archetypal criticism is a branch of literary criticism which investigates and studies repetitive narrative structures, character types, themes, motifs and images that according to Carl Jung are universally shared by people of all cultures. These repetitive patterns are a result of universal forms on structures in the human psyche, which when presented well in literature immediately draw a strong response from the reader as he / she shares the archetypes expressed by the author. The anthropological origins of archetypal criticism can pre-date its psychoanalytic origins by over thirty years. The Scottish anthropologist, James G. Frazer, made significant contribution to this field when his work The Golden Bough (1890-1915) was published. He studied the elemental patterns of myth and ritual that recur in diverse cultures and religions. Frazer argues that the death-rebirth myth is present in almost all cultural mythologies and is acted out in terms of growing seasons and vegetation.

    Fearful Symmetries: William Blake, Northrop Frye, and Archetypal Criticism Mark Ryan University of Nottingham orthrop frye’s wide-ranging analysis of William Blake’s art Nin Fearful Symmetry and in other criticism has long been appropriated by Blake scholars in their support of the archetypal tradition, with its emphasis on the meaning and sources of symbolism in the works of Blake. Such criticism has been viewed as standing in opposition to the historical research of David Erdman and others, whose view of Blake’s poetry and art results from a close inspection of the life and times of the artist. However, Frye’s contribution in this field has endured due to his insistence on relat- ing Blake’s ideas to other traditions of literary and religious thought and his ability to analyze Blake’s symbols and their interconnections. Frye’s study of Blake has had enormously important repercussions for literary critical studies, as it helped to form the basis of his own system of critical theory in the Anatomy of Criticism: Four Essays (1957). In the Anatomy, Frye provides an analysis of four different types of literary expression, the third of which is the archetypal. In this article, it is my intention to partially explore the archetypal tradition of criticism, to which Frye is a prominent contributor, and to highlight the ways in which Frye’s analysis of archetypal symbolism in Blake created a new direction in literary criticism. The first section will give a brief synopsis of typical literature from the archetypal ESC 37.2 (June 2011): 173–183 critical tradition and explain Frye’s position within the field in relation to his use of Jung’s theories and study of Blake.

    7 Mythological and Archetypal Approaches I. DEFINITIONS AND MISCONCEPTIONS In The Masks of God, Joseph Campbell recounts a curious phenomenon of animal behavior. Newly hatched chickens, bits of eggshells still clinging to their tails, will dart for cover when a hawk flies overhead; yet they remain unaffected by other birds. Furthermore, a wooden model of a hawk, drawn forward along a wire above their coop, will send them scurrying (if the model is pulled backward, however, there is no response). "Whence;' Campbell asks, "this abrupt seizure by an image to which there is no counterpart in the chicken's world? Living gulls and ducks, herons and pigeons, leave it cold; but the work of art strikes some very deep chord!" (31; our italics). Campbell's hinted analogy, though only roughly approximate, will serve none­ theless as an instructive introduction to the mythological approach to literature. For it is with the relationship of literary art to "some very deep chord" in human nature that mythological criticism deals. The myth critic is concerned to seek out those mysterious elements that inform certain literary works and that elicit, with almost uncanny force, dramatic and near-universal human reactions. The myth critic wishes to discover how certain works of literature, usually those that have becom~,_.Qr promise to become, "classics:' image a kind of reality to which readers respond-while other works, seemingly as well constructed, and even some forms of reality, leave them cold. Speaking figuratively, the myth critic studies in depth the "wooden hawks" of great literature: the so-called archetypes or archetypal pat- {terns that the writer has drawn forward along the tensed structural wires of his or "'her masterpiece and that vibrate in such a way that a sympathetic resonance is set " off deep within the reader.

Ruth Mortimer enlightened him: she was that bibliographer. Such is her reputation, founded firmly on her catalogues of French and Italian sixteenth-century illustrated books in the , Hofer collection at Harvard University, that she passed almost thirty years ago into the strata of bibliographers who are cited by surname and number. Those catalogues reveal much about Ruth. They are bibliographically exemplary, giving detailed physical descriptions, noting variants, and citing other copies where relevant. But they go beyond strict bibliography to follow the previous and subsequent life of the illustrations and make connections between author, artist, text, and printer. Ruth continued to pursue these connections, and they formed the subject of her lectures as Rosenbach fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. Author portraits in particular had interested her since working on the Hofer collection, and she was able to synthesize her work in 1980 when she delivered (and published) the Hanes lecture marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Hanes Foundation. Ruth had a strong creative streak, and it is probably this which made her work with illustrated books so insightful. She was interested in the tech- nique of illustrations and artistic influences in addition to the content and iconography of the image.

J K Rowling’s popular Harry Potter series of books draws immensely from ancient Greek mythology in characterisation, plot, theme, animals or imaginary creatures and various other aspects. This paper strives to trace as many parallels as possible in an attempt to decode the success value and appeal ancient Greek mythology holds for the present day reader. Myth and Mythology To begin with one needs to discuss what is myth and mythology. In classical Greek, ‘mythos’ signified any story or plot, whether true or invented. In its central modern significance however, a myth is one story in a mythology - a system of stories of ancient origin which aimed to determine why the world is as it is and things happen as they do, to provide a rationale for social customs and observances, and to establish sanctions for the rules by which people conduct their lives. Most myths are related to social rituals - set forms and procedures in sacred ceremonies but anthropologists disagree whether rituals generated myths or myths generated rituals. A number of modern writers have also asserted that an integrative mythology, whether inherited or invented, is essential to literature.
