Nisbet University of Cambridge Professor Claude Rawson Yale University The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism will provide a com- prehensive historical account of Western literary criticism from class- ical antiquity to the present day, dealing with both literary theory and critical practice. The History is intended as an authoritative work of reference and exposition, but more than a mere chronicle of facts. While remaining broadly non-partisan it will, where ap- propriate, address controversial issues of current critical debate without evasion or false pretences of neutrality. Each volume is a self-contained unit designed to be used independently as well as in conjunction with the others in the series. Her areas of specialisation are feminism and post- colonialism. Her book, The Colonial Rise of the Novel (1993), traces the links between the colonial venture and the development of the novelistic form. Her current work is on English writing in nineteenth-century Bengal. Timothy Bahti is Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the author of Allegories of History: Literary Historiography After Hegel (1992) and Ends of the Lyric: Direction and Consequence in Western Poetry (1996). He is presently writing a monograph on styles of paradox in modern German-Jewish writing, and a theory of the lyric. Manuel Barbeito is a Professor of Literary History at the University of Santiago, Spain. He has published a book on W. H. Auden (1988) and has edited Paradise Lost: The Word, the World, the Words (1991) and Modernity, Modernism, Postmodernism (2000). He is currently completing a work enti- tled El drama de la identidad en siete obras de la tradición literaria inglesa, and editing a book in honour of Terry Eagleton. Andrew Bowie is Professor of German at Royal Holloway, University of London. He is the author of Aesthetics and Subjectivity: From Kant to Nietzsche (1990, new revised edition 2000), Schelling and Modern European Philosophy (1993), and From Romanticism to Critical Theory: The Philosophy of German Literary Theory (1997). He has also translated and edited F. W. J. von Schelling, On the History of Modern Philosophy (1994), F. D. E. Schleiermacher, Hermeneutics and Criticism and Other Texts (1998), and edited the book, Manfred Frank: The Subject and the Text (1997). He is at present writing books on music, meaning and modernity, on crossing the divide between European and analytical philosophy, and on German philoso- phy from Kant to Habermas. Joseph Bristow is Professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. His books include Effeminate England: Homoerotic Writing After viii Cambridge Histories Online © Cambridge University Press, 2008 Notes on contributors ix 1885 (1995) and Sexuality (1997). He has edited several volumes, most recently The Cambridge Companion to Victorian Poetry (2000). He is cur- rently at work on a full-length study of Victorian poetry, sex, and sexuality. Alex Callinicos is Professor of Politics at the University of York. He has written extensively on Marxism and social theory. Among his many books are Making History (1987), Against Postmodernism (1989), Theories and Narratives (1995), and Social Theory (1999). He has recently completed a book on equality. Clive Cazeaux is Senior Lecturer in Aesthetics at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. He is the editor of The Continental Aesthetics Reader (2000) and the author of articles on metaphor, synaesthesia, and the relation- ship between art and writing. Brian Coates is a Lecturer in English and Cultural Studies at the University of Limerick. His most recent publications include two art catalogue essays, ‘Deidre O’Mahony, Erratics’ (1996) and ‘Lingua occulorum’ (1997). He is a joint editor (with Joachim Fischer and Patricia Lynch) of the IASIL Conference Proceedings 1998 on Irish writing 1798–1998 (forthcoming 2000). Gary Day is a Principal Lecturer at De Montfort University. He is the editor of the three volume Literature and Culture in Modern Britain series (Longman). He is also the author of Re-Reading Leavis: ‘Culture’ and Literary Criticism (1996) and the forthcoming book Class. John Drakakis is Professor of English Studies at the University of Stirling. He is the general editor of Routledge English Texts and the New Critical Idiom series. He is the editor of Alternative Shakespeares (1985), Shakespearean Tragedy
