Type of school Differences relating to pupil admissions These are independent schools in the maintained sector. The Academy’s admission policy and Academies arrangements must be consistent with admissions law and the School Admissions Code and the Academy Trust is the admission authority* and sets the oversubscription criteria. All schools that have chosen through Governing Body Resolution and application to the Secretary Academy Converter of State to become an Academy under the Academies Act 2010. Academies established and managed by sponsors from a wide range of backgrounds, including Academy Sponsor Led high performing schools and colleges, universities, individual philanthropists, businesses, the voluntary sector, and the faith communities. Community schools The Local Authority (LA) is the admission authority* and sets the oversubscription criteria. In Foundation schools the governing body is the employer and the admissions authority*. The Foundation School school's land and buildings are either owned by the governing body or by a charitable foundation. These are academy schools set up in response to parental demand. The Academy Trust is the Free Schools admission authority* and sets the oversubscription criteria. These schools have a religious character often Church of England, Roman Catholic or Jewish. The Voluntary aided schools (VA) admissions authority* and sets the oversubscription criteria. VC schools often have a religious character, normally Church of England. The LA is the admission Voluntary controlled schools (VC) authority* and sets the oversubscription criteria. * an admission authority is responsible for all aspects of pupil admissions and appeals.
