General location: Include in which part of the country and which large administrative region(s) the site lies and the location of the nearest large town. The site lies in Hiroshima Prefecture in the Chugoku District of Honshu Island (main island) of Japan. The site is situated in the southern part of Hatsukaichi City (population: about 0.11million, surface area: 489 square km) which is about 20km east of Hiroshima City, prefectural capital of Hiroshima Prefecture 10. Elevation: (in metres: average and/or maximum & minimum) T.P.(Average tidal level of Tokyo Bay) Minimum 0m: maximum 2m 11. Area: (in hectares) 142ha 12. General overview of the site: Provide a short paragraph giving a summary description of the principal ecological characteristics and importance of the wetland. Miyajima is an island situated at the coast of Seto Inland Sea, in the north western part of Hiroshima Bay. The whole area is designated as the Seto Inland Sea National Park, having received distinction as a place of scenic beauty and a historic site. Moreover, a part of the island area is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Ramsar Site falls within the buffer zone of the World Heritage site. Especially, the southern coast where the said wetland is located, is a well conserved natural coast area which have mostly been lost in other islands of the Seto Inland Sea Region with the mountain forests at the back. The spring water from the mountains and the inflow of seawater at the time of spring tide are mixed to form a tidal marsh, providing the environment to enable the inhabitation of the vulnerable dragonfly Orthetrum poecilops miyajimaensis which has only been recorded at Mijayima and at one site in southern China. 13. Ramsar Criteria: Tick the box under each Criterion applied to the designation of the Ramsar site. See Annex II of the Explanatory Notes and Guidelines for the Criteria and guidelines for their application (adopted by Resolution VII.11). Justification for the application of each Criterion listed in 13 above: Provide justification for each Criterion in turn, clearly identifying to which Criterion the justification applies (see Annex II for guidance on acceptable forms of justification). Criterion 2: The vulnerable dragonfly, Orthetrum poecilops miyajimaensis (IUCN Red list VU, MOE Red list CR+EN, designated animal by National Parks Law) is the endemic subspecies o living only in Miyajima. Even the same species live in only 2 sites in the world, Miyajima and southern China. Criterion 9: Miyajima is the only habitat of Orthetrum poecilops miyajimaensis and supporting the 100% population of Orthetrum poecilops miyajimaensis. Biogeography (required when Criteria 1 and/or 3 and /or certain applications of Criterion 2 are applied to the designation): Name the relevant biogeographic region that includes the Ramsar site, and identify the biogeographic regionalisation system that has been applied. a) biogeographic region: Palearctic region-Japanese Evergreen Forest b) biogeographic regionalisation scheme (include reference citation): Udvardy, M. D. F. (1975). A classification of the biogeographical provinces of the world. 16. Physical features of the site: Describe, as appropriate, the geology, geomorphology; origins - natural or artificial; hydrology; soil type; water quality; water depth, water permanence; fluctuations in water level; tidal variations; downstream area; general climate, etc. Geology: Whole island consists of biotite granite of the late Mesozoic Cretaceous. Geomorphology: Tidal marsh (35ha) forests at the back, and coast areas. Origins: Natural Hydrology: At the tidal marsh, freshwater from the spring water of the hinterland and seawater flowing in at high tide are mixed to form brackish water Soil type: Clay, fine sand, coarse sand make clear layers with the grain size pattern at the wetland mainly composed of silty sand. But at the mountain ridge, layers of decomposed granite have fallen down from the soil of the surrounding mountains, forming sedimentary layers of 30-70cm Water quality: Salinity within the wetland changing in accordance with the ebb and flow of the tide is about 0- 3% pH is 8-5. EC is 0-4 S/m Water depth: Water depth within the wetland changes between 0-1m in accordance with the tidal level. Fluctuations in water level: The tidal level changes up to about 3m at maximum according to the ebb and flow of the tide. General climate: It has a temperate climate throughout the year with the small amount of rainfall except rainy season. From the summer to autumn seasons, there are occasions of the influence of typhoons. Data from Hatsukaichi City HP shows that the fluctuation range of monthly average temperature is 5.0-29.3 degrees Celsius, with an average temperature of 16.1 degrees Celsius. The average rainfall is 1511mm. 17. This was a first run for the newly reactivated Taiwan tour (which we last ran in 2006), with a new local organizer who proved very good and enthusiastic, and knew the best local sites to visit. The weather was remarkably kind to us and we had no significant daytime rain, somewhat to my surprise, whilst temperatures were pretty reasonable even in the mountains- though it was cold at night at Dasyueshan where the unheated hotel was a bit of a shock, but in a great birding spot, so overall it was bearable. Fog on the heights of Hohuanshan was a shame but at least the mid and lower levels stayed clear. Otherwise the lowland sites were all good despite it being very windy at Hengchun in the far south. Arco and I decided to use a varied assortment of local eating places with primarily local menus, and much to my amazement I found myself enjoying noodle dishes. The food was a highlight in fact, as it was varied, often delicious and best of all served quickly whilst being both hot and fresh. A nice adjunct to the trip, and avoided losing lots of time with elaborate meals.

In 1999 and 2000, respectively, 73.0% and 64.8% nest boxes were used by the Great Tit and the Varied Tit.     Taiwan: Formosan Endemics Set departure tour 17th – 30th April, 2016 Tour leader: Charley Hesse Report and photos by Charley Hesse. (All photos were taken on this tour) Mikado Pheasant has become so accustomed to people at the feeding sites, it now comes within a few feet. Taiwan is the hidden jewel of Asian birding and one of the most under-rated birding destinations in the world. There are currently in impressive 25 endemics (and growing by the year), including some of the most beautiful birds in Asia, like Swinhoe’s & Mikado Pheasants and Taiwan Blue-Magpie. Again we had a clean sweep of Taiwan endemics seeing all species well, and we also found the vast majority of endemic subspecies. Some of these are surely set for species status, giving visiting birders potential ‘arm chair ticks’ for many years to come. We also saw other major targets, like Fairy Pitta, Black-faced Spoonbill and Himalayan Owl. Migrants were a little thin on the ground this year, but we still managed an impressive 189 bird species. We did particularly well on mammals this year, seeing 2 giant flying-squirrels, Formosan Serow, Formosan Rock Macaque and a surprise Chinese Ferret-Badger. We spent some time enjoying the wonderful butterflies and identified 31 species, including the spectacular Magellan Birdwing, Chinese Peacock and Paper Kite. Our trip to the island of Lanyu (Orchid Island) adds a distinct flavour to the trip with its unique culture and scenery. With some particularly delicious food, interesting history and surely some of the most welcoming people in Asia, Taiwan is an unmissable destination.

We enjoyed near-perfect weather as we explored many of the best birding sites, seeing nearly 170 species and photographing most of them, including the vast majority of the avian endemics. Most people live in the coastal plain, which is far from picturesque, but does have some globally important wetlands that huge numbers of shorebirds, waterfowl, and other aquatic species inhabit, and we spent a couple of excellent days in these areas. Away from the coast, the terrain becomes very mountainous and sparsely-populated, with lush forest, gorgeous vistas, and some truly spectacular endemic birds. Taiwan’s mountains reach nearly 13000 ft. (4000 m.) in height, which is remarkable considering its small size.

Glika tulkoto Bībeli, jo jau tajā ir minēti vairāki svešzemju putni, piemēram, strauss ( Bībele. Latviešu val. 1689). Pēc tam dažādas Latvijā nesastopamas sugas ir minētas vairākās latviešu valodas vārdnīcās (Lange 1773; Stender 1789; u.c.), un daži no šiem nosaukumiem jau ir stabili iegājušies valodas praksē. Vajadzība pēc pilnīga putnu nosaukumu saraksta latviski ir palielinājusies pēdējā laikā, kad bija nepieciešams latviskot dažādu Latvijai saistošu konvenciju pielikumu tekstus, latviski tulko nopietnas enciklopēdijas (par putniem), tiek tulkotas dažādu zemju dokumentālās &lmas vai, vienkārši, daudzi cilvēki apceļo pasauli un grib citiem pastāstīt arī par eksotiskās zemēs redzētiem putniem. Arī tulkotajā daiļliteratūrā brīžiem pavīd kādi putni, kuru nosaukumi tiek latviskoti. Saraksta pamatu izveidoja Jānis Baumanis pēc holandiešu valodnieka Rūrda Jorritsma lūguma, kurš 1992. gadā sāka darbu pie putnu nosaukumu vārdnīcas izveides visās Eiropas valodās. Šobrīd vairs nav iespējams pateikt, cik no šeit publicētajiem nosaukumiem ir J. Baumaņa doti, taču viņa ieguldījums šā materiāla tapšanā ir ļoti nozīmīgs, tādēļ viņš saglabāts kā autors arī šim saraksta gala variantam.
