GUIDANCE GUIDANCE GUIDANCE Wednesday, 1st April 2020 Guidance for Funerals and End of Corona Life Care during Virus Pandemic This guidance has been prepared by the Sikh Council UK to help Gurdwaras, funeral directors and bereaved families during the global Coronavirus ) Disease (COVID 19 pandemic and is also based on the Governments guidance for the care of deceased with suspected or confirmed coronavirus (COVID – 19) This guidance aims to explore current and worst-‐case scenarios for death management in the Sikh Faith. Our objectives are to: 1. Help end of life patients access pastoral/spiritual tations care when visi are restricted 2. uphold the dignity and respect of the deceased 3. prevent the further loss of life or transmission of the potentially lethal disease to others 4. provide solace and for closure the bereaved 5. find practical solutions for applying the teachings tions and tradi of the Sikh Faith. Inpatient/End of Life Care To help stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-‐19), most hospitals have stopped or significantly limited visits. You should check with your local hospital what to find out their advice . is Exceptions can be made on compassionate grounds, including vulnerable patients with dementia or learning disabilities, or patients receiving -‐ end of-‐life care. If visitation res is tricted, then loved may ones still make contact through phone/video-‐calls if the patient still has the means to do so. If visiting is not then allowed the patient should be equipped with the means to access Gurbani digitally (via smartphones, portable mp3 players, ). etc. If the patient is unable to independently access Gurbani the ward sister or charge ulted nurse should be cons so that Gurbani can be played near the patient audibly and respectfully. -
Gurdwara Guidelines
Gurdwara Guidelines Darbar Sahib (The overall Responsibility of the Darbar Sahib Management Committee) • Parkaash in the morning and Suhaassan in the evening • All prayers to be conducted by the Granthi/Jatha unless specified by MC • Gurdwara programs start with recitation of Gurbani, followed by Kirtan. • Various Gurbani Paths are done each Sunday – refer to separate Paath list. KIRTAN: • Kirtan times are 10.00 am -11.45 am on Sundays and 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm on all other days unless otherwise specified by the Committee. • Kirtan is followed by Anand Sahib, Ardaas and Hukam Naama • The local / Sangat Kirtan singers to be allocated time by DSM • If the family hosting the Langgar has a special request, they must discuss with the DSM • The last half hour of the program is allocated to the Resident Granthi/Jatha • Program to be finished within the allocated times ARDAAS: • To be done by the Resident Granthi only, unless otherwise specified by MC • Ardaas is according to the Rehat Maryada - no repetitions & unnecessary additions • Only the name of the family sponsoring the program of the day is to be read out unless requested due to special circumstances. • No monetary donations will be announced in the Ardas. • A DSM member to collect Ardaas list from Treasurer and provide to Granthi and a list with the donations to the Secretary for announcements. LANGGAR • Families hosting the function on Sunday are requested to obtain the Langgar ingredient list from the Kitchen committee Sewadaar. • Preparation for Sunday Langgar takes place on the Saturday at a time nominated by the host family. -

51 Arunajeet Kaur: Police Gurdwaras Police Gurdwaras of the Straits Settlements and the Malay States (1874-1957) Arunajeet Kaur Nanyang Technological University, Singapore _______________________________________________________________ Sikh migrants to Malaya, who came under the auspices of the British Empire, were first policemen and were later followed by other Sikhs from the Punjab, who took up other professions in the host land. Gurudwara construction and the history behind these Gurudwaras are reflective of the stationing of Sikh police regiments in the respective Malay States and also the settlement patterns of Sikh communities in Malaya. The prolific construction of Sikh Gurudwaras in Malaya demonstrate ‘hotspots’, where more Gurudwaras were constructed, such as in Perak, Selangor and the Straits Settlements, that were to further encourage Sikh communal activities and culture in Malaya. gurbwnI ivcwr GURBANI CONTEMPLATION 114 ਸਿਮਰਨੁ SIMRAN ਏ ਮਨ! ਹਸਰ ਜੀ ਸਿਆਇ ਤੂ; ਇਕ ਮਸਨ ਇਕ ਸਿਸਤ ਭਾਇ O my soul, lovingly remember Thou, Beloved Lord single-mindedly and with rapt attention PART – 5 ‘KHOJI’ SIMRAN (WORD CONTEMPLATION) Part-5 In Simran 'attention' has special importance -hence, it is necessary to discuss it in detail. When we pay attention to something or an object, our mind relates to it or has communion with it and there is some give and take of its good and bad influence. If we are not interested in an object or something, we are unable to pay deep attention to it and it has a superficial influence on us. 1n other words there is no communion, Sangat, or sharing, and there is no give and take. This can be further explained through some examples. 1n the homes there is Kirtan or Paath going on by radio or through tape recording, but the family members are more often involved in their domestic chores or absorbed in their conversations. In the same way when we ourselves do Simran or Paath, our consciousness is involved in ‘various other thoughts’, due to which we do not pay attention to Gurbani. The general Sangat has the same complaint i.e. the mind doesn't stay still in ‘Simran’. When our consciousness or attention is not in Gurbani or Simran, we are not participating in the Sangat of Gurbani. Due to this, we are unable to be in communion with the innate, spiritual, sentiments of Gurbani. In this way, we are not in the Sangat of the high, pure and Divine Gurbani and as a result we are deprived of the philosopher’s- stone effect of it. -

Akhand Paath at Home
Akhand Paath at Home What is the procedure for doing an Akhand Paath? Akhand Paath (Akhand = uninterrupted, without break; paath = reading) is non-stop, continuous recital of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from beginning to end. Such a recital is usually completed within 48 hours, however time should not be an issue. The entire Sacred Volume of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 1430 large pages, is read through in a continuous ceremony. This reading must go on day and night, without a moment’s intermission. The relay of reciters who take turns at reciting Gurbani must ensure that no break occurs. As they change places at given intervals, one picks the line from his predecessor’s lips and continues. According to Sikh history, Akhand Paaths were rarely done. In the Guru Sahibaan’s history, only three Akhand Paaths took place, on the other hand the Guru Sahibaans held numerous Sehaj Paaths on different occasions such as jyoti jyot (physical passing) of the previous Guru or other occasions. Conjecture traces the popularity of Akhand Paaths to the turbulent days of the 18th century when persecution had scattered the Sikhs to far-off places. In those exilic, uncertain times, the practice of accomplishing a reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji by a continuous recital is believed to have popularised Akhand Paaths due to the circumstances. MARYADA (PROTOCOL) FOR AN AKHAND PAATH In accordance to the Panthic Sikh Rehit Maryada: Whichever family or congregation undertakes the reading should carry it out itself through its members, relatives, friends etc. all together. The number of reciters is not prescribed. -
