Job Title: Religious Worker - Granthi Employer Location: Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Hounslow Hob Type: Permanent Salary: £17,000 - £19,000 plus accommodation
Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha (SGSS), Hounslow is a long- standing pillar of the local Sikh community in Hounslow and surrounding areas. Through its work, SGSS, Hounslow is able to have direct, positive community impact, existing to serve and advance the Sikh religion and customs. For the SGSS, Hounslow, community attending the Gurdwara is crucial to maintaining spiritual wellbeing and keeping in touch with cultural and family roots. Moreover, SGSS has a wider social impact and welcomes all in need of comfort, food and refuge.
Main Responsibilities Performing all religious duties pertaining to: o Kirtan i.e. a practice that involves chanting hymns or mantras to the accompaniment of instruments such as the harmonium etc. o Nitnem i.e. selected Sikh hymns that are designated to be read by Sikhs every day at pre-fixed times o Sukhmani Sahib Paath i.e. set of hymns divided into 24 sections which appear in the Guru Granth Sahib o Ardaas i.e. a Sikh prayer that is done before performing or after undertaking any significant tasks o Sukhasan i.e. protocol normally used by Sikhs at the end of the day to retire the Sikh holy scriptures (the holy Granth) to a special bedroom called a Sachkhand
Recite the holy scripture, namely the Guru Granth Sahib during religious ceremonies to teach the congregation in matters of the Sikh faith
Lead and support the spiritual life of the community
Giving religious instruction to children and adults
Officiating at weddings, funerals and other religious ceremonies
Counselling and supporting members of the community
Organising and coordinating the work of local volunteers
Supervising staff in religious functions
Teaching Punjabi language classes
Translating religious texts
To read, interpret and explain the Guru Granth Sahib
Conduct acts of worship and prayer times
Take part in Sikh festivals
Who we're looking for (skills, qualifications and experience) Fluency in the Punjabi language (reading, speaking, listening and writing) is essential
Understanding of Punjabi culture such as food habits, expectations of elderly, respect from young people and how an extended family works amongst Sikhs
Competent and experienced (minimum 2 years’ experience) in the duties of a Granthi
