Group B Expulsions of Jews and Muslims from Spain: Impact on Morocco In the Iberian Peninsula (today’s Spain and Portugal), Christian kingdoms in the north gradually pushed southward, taking territories from the Muslims who had ruled Spain/Portugal since the early 8th century. This process was called the ‘reconquista’ (‘reconquest’). As areas of the Iberian Peninsula fell to Christian armies, the religious balance of the population shifted until Spain had become a predominantly Catholic country, albeit with large Muslim and Jewish minorities. In 1492, Granada, the last Muslim kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula fell, ending more than 700 years of Muslim rule in southwestern Europe. The newly victorious Spanish government ended the religious pluralism of the previous centuries. The Alhambra Decree expelled the Jews from Spain and began a period of intolerance toward Muslims. (Similarly, Portugal expelled both Jews and Muslims in 1497 – though many Portuguese Muslims relocated to Spain rather than leaving the region.) At first, Spanish Muslims, known as ‘Mudejars,’ had some freedom of religion. Within a few years, however, Muslims were being forced – through torture and imprisonment – to convert to Christianity. Many ‘Moriscos’ (as Muslim converts to Christianity, and later their descendants, were called) continued to practice the Muslim religion in secret, which put them at risk from the Spanish Inquisition, a council that prosecuted anyone who differed from strict Catholic beliefs/practices. Religious intolerance, persecution, and forced conversions – along with frequent attempts to prevent Muslims from emigrating – resulted in several Muslim revolts, such as a revolt from 1499 to 1501, a second revolt in the mid-1500s, and the War of the Alpujarras from 1568 to 1571. -

JUDAEO-CONVERSO MERCHANTS IN THE PRIVATE TRADE BETWEEN MACAO AND MANILA IN THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD LÚCIO DE SOUSA Tokyo University of Foreign Studiesa ABSTRACT The present paper intends to contribute with new information to a reconstruction of the Sephardic presence in the Macao–Manila commer- cial network. For this purpose, in the first place, we intend to trace the pro- file of the Judaeo-converso merchants arriving in China and the Philippines and to reconstruct the commercial networks to which they belonged during the 16th and early 17th centuries. MARIBEL FIERRO Hostages and the Dangers of Cultural Contact: Two Cases from Umayyad Cordoba* Hostages are captives of a peculiar sort. Rather than having been captured during war, they are in the hands of the enemy as free persons who have temporarily lost their freedom, either because they were given and kept as a pledge (for example, for the fulfilment of a treaty) or in order to act as a substitute for someone who has been taken prisoner1. The prisoner, usually an important person, can regain his or her freedom under certain conditions, usually by the payment of a ransom. When those conditions are fulfilled, the hostage is released. In the medieval period, the taking of hostages was linked to conquest, the establishment of treaties, and the submission of rebels. The Spanish word for »hostage« (rehén, pl. rehenes) derives from the Arabic root r.h.n (which produces, in Classical Arabic, rāhin, pl. rahāʾin)2, and this origin attests to the fact that the practice of taking hostages was widespread in medieval Iberia and more generally in the Mediterranean3. The Muslims had not, however, invented it4. Religious Diversity and Culture in Medieval Spain
Centro de Lenguas Modernas – Universidad de Granada – Syllabus Hispanic Studies RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY AND CULTURE IN MEDIEVAL SPAIN General description During the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula was inhabited by men and women of the three monotheistic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. These three cultures shared cities and villages, in addition to language and some customs, for many centuries, under both Muslim rule and Christian, and this legacy is part of our cultural heritage. This course aims to contribute to the acquisition of a better knowledge and understanding of the past and of Spanish culture, particularly through the study of the social relations, and religious and cultural backgrounds that were found in the medieval hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena may offer clues to understanding the present. For this reason, we will take a trip through the history of the presence and relationships of the three communities in the Iberian Peninsula, and briefly analyze the fate that each of them met with the coming of the Modern Era. From the eighth century to the thirteenth century, Christians borrowed Jewish religious exegesis and beliefs in order to expand their own understanding of Christian religious texts. -
Berbers of North Africa
Berbers of North Africa Background: The Berbers, who call themselves “imazighen” live across northern Africa and trace their roots to the indigenous pre-Arab, pre-Islamic cultures of the region. Approximately 9.5 million of them live in Morocco, about 4.3 million in Algeria, and smaller numbers in neighboring countries. The language belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family, making it related to the ancient Egyptian language but not to modern Arabic (though Arabic is widely spoken as a second language). Most Berbers are Muslim though remnants of earlier traditions have survived as well. Berbers constitute about one-quarter of the population of Algeria. Of these Berber- speaking Algerians, about half are Kabyles, who live mostly in the mountains east of Algiers (though, as we see in the movie, many have migrated to the cities). Most Berbers, like their Arab co-nationalists, are Sunni Muslims. Throughout the 1980s, the Kabyles revolted against Algerian government policies of Arabization. Discontent and sporadic fighting has continued. Fernandez-Morera: Some Overlooked Realities of Jewish Life under Islamic Rule in Me Comparative Civilizations Review 21 Some Overlooked Realities of Jewish Life under Islamic Rule in Medieval Spain Dario Fernandez-Morera [email protected] It is widely accepted that under Islam the Jewish community of Spain briefly enjoyed a “Golden Age.” However, it is far less widely understood that Muslim, Christian, and Jewish legal and historical sources indicate that favorable treatment violated medieval Islamic law and also that even under the best circumstances, Jews remained subject to the vicissitudes of their condition as dhimmis (“protected” non-Muslims). If there was brief good treatment, it was because of tactical needs of particular Muslim rulers, not legal considerations. Marginalized groups who side with a successful invader normally see their status rise with a change in the political fortunes.1 The Jewish community of Spain was no exception. -
