Fairy-Tale Mountain Scenery – the Start of Our Second Winter Together MEDIA DOCUMENTATION FOR THE FAIRY-TALE MOUNTAIN SCENERY Fairy-tale mountain scenery – the start of our second winter together Corvatsch AG and Diavolezza Lagalb AG are partner companies and, on 20 October 2018, they will start their second winter together on the Diavolezza. As well as various innovations in terms of services, events and food and drink, a pricing system for ski passes has been introduced which is unique in the Alps. Anyone booking their ski pass early can benefit from the new „Snow Deal“. Cable cars running 365 days a year The three cable cars at Corvatsch, Diavolezza and Lagalb are all in the Upper Engadin, located around the famous Bernina massif with the 4049 m high Piz Bernina at its heart – the only 4000 m peak in the Eastern Alps. On the western side of the Piz Bernina towers the mighty Corvatsch, while the gentler Diavolezza and Lagalb – the sports fans‘ favourite – are to the east. The villages of Sils, Silvaplana, St. Moritz and Pontresina are part of this fairy-tale mountain world, along with the Berni- na Pass. Whether it‘s winter or summer, whether you are in search of action, fine food or relaxation – in the fairy-tale mountain scenery of Corvatsch, Diavolezza and Lagalb, everyone will find what they are looking for. The cable cars run for 365 days a year – for seven months in the winter for skiers and then for five months in the summer – offering breathtaking views of the Piz Bernina from different perspectives. Fairy-tale winter 2018/19 In winter, skiers and snowboarders will find about 160 km of fantastic pistes, 19 lifts and 14 moun- tain restaurants. Some unique offers like the Corvatsch Snow Night and the Glüna Plaina (Romansch: full moon) on Diavolezza mean there are memorable experiences to be had even in the night-time. Downhill skiers, ski tourers and freeriders will have numerous opportunities to discover their dream run and reach the peak of happiness. Probably the best of the amazing ski slopes in the Engadin is the sensational Hahnensee run from Corvatsch down to St. Moritz Bad. Among the highlights on Diavo- lezza is the 10-km-long glacier run down to Morteratsch. Corvatsch The many and varied slopes on Corvatsch will be ready and waiting for all snow sports fans from Sa- turday, 24 November 2018. A nice aperitif will welcome guests at the start of the season. Then from Wednesday, 19 December 2018, skiers can start to practise their sweeping turns on the wide slopes of Furtschellas. This winter Furtschellas ends the season three weeks later on Easter Monday, 22 1 April 2019. The whole Corvatsch ski area closes on Sunday, 28 April 2019. Food and drink There is a wide choice of restaurants offering all kinds of delicacies, accompanied by stunning views over the alpine ranges. Restaurant 3303 on Corvatsch is the highest in Graubünden and boasts an impressive selection of Engadin specialities and a 360° panorama. Other insiders‘ tips for gourmets are the legendary Kuhstall above Sils, the Ustaria Rabgiusa and the La Chüdera mountain restaurant on Furtschellas. The creative chefs at La Chüdera are always a step ahead when it comes to food trends, and have brought the once forgotten crop of hemp back to the dining table. Their dry-cured sausage with hemp, made from local beef and roasted hemp seeds, has a surprisingly nutty flavour. And anyone who prefers something sweet will love the crème brûlée with hemp. These tasty treats made with hemp do not have any intoxicating effect! Sun, sound and drinks The Hossa Bar is the place for anyone in search of après-ski. For enjoying a relaxed drink with friends, soaking up the sun outside on a deck-chair, or dancing, partying and flirting till you drop – the Hossa Bar is popular with everyone. With a colourful mix of people, cool drinks and hot beats, there‘s al- ways a great atmosphere and plenty of high spirits. To ward off hunger pangs, this winter the bar will be serving various kinds of authentic hotdog. Corvatsch Snow Night Swing down Switzerland‘s longest illuminated ski slope and then party with friends till late: every Friday, the Corvatsch will be in the spotlight, with the freshly groomed 4.2-km-long slope open from 7 p.m. For breaks to catch your breath and fortify yourself between thrilling descents, there‘s the Restaurant Murtèl at the middle station. Pizza from the wood-fired oven tastes even better by night. And after the skiing, everyone meets up in the Hossa Bar, where the party continues with verve. Corvatsch Park For anyone who finds skiing and snowboarding on perfectly groomed slopes boring, the Corvatsch Park is a great place to let off steam. There is a new „Fun Ride“ slope about 500 m long, with wave runs, steep corners and little jumps, offering an extra dose of action for anyone wanting to give free- style skiing a try. The Corvatsch Park is a venue for national and international competitions and is continuously being enhanced. Now the smart raven is ready for the next big thing: the Engadin is bidding to host the FIS Freestyle World Championships in 2025. All the local authorities in the Upper Engadin, Corvatsch AG and Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG, and the tourism organisation for Engadin St. Moritz are supporting the project. But before then there will be a first-class freestyle showdown from 29 – 30 March 2019, when the world‘s best free skiers will compete in the Freeski World Cup Final. Ski & Dine Around Corvatsch Some attractive packages in Silvaplana and Sils are also available during the pre- and low season, with the Ski & Dine Around Corvatsch deal. More information available at www.corvatsch.ch. Diavolezza The winter season on the she-devil‘s mountain begins as soon as Saturday, 20 October 2018. But Diavolezza is more than just perfectly prepared slopes in fantastic scenery – it‘s also a mecca for ski tourers, with Piz Palü and Piz Bernina within easy reach, and it‘s a freeriders‘ paradise, too. Other highlights on the she-devil‘s mountain are the fun full-moon skiing event „Glüna Plaina“, the Bernina Glaciers world of adventure and the glacier run down to Morteratsch. 2 Sleep at 3000 m above sea level Climbers and hikers can stay overnight at the Berghaus Diavolezza for 11 months of the year, in dor- mitories or in comfortable 2- and 4-bed rooms. They‘ll be sleeping at 3000 metres above sea level, high above the Morteratsch and Pers glaciers. Food and drink Choose between the à-la-carte restaurant and the self-service section of the mountain inn, between traditional regional specialities from Graubünden and the Val Tellina, and fast-food classics. At the Diavolezza mountain inn, you‘ll enjoy devilishly good food and heavenly hospitality. VR Diavolezza – the highest virtual reality experience in the world at 2978 m above sea level Diavolezza Lagalb AG has become the first mountain railway company in Switzerland to offer its visi- tors a virtual glimpse of the winter season. By donning a virtual reality headset, they can discover the breathtaking beauty of the Diavolezza under a clear blue sky even when the visibility outside is bad, go skiing, race around in the Fun Park or temporarily become ski tourers, mountaineers or freeriders. All they need to do is hire out a VR headset for free from the reception desk at the Diavolezza moun- tain inn, make themselves comfortable in a swivel chair and enjoy 6.5 minutes of sheer action from a new perspective. Diavolezza Challenge – permanent ski touring route Since last winter there has been a new attraction for ambitious ski tourers, the „Diavolezza Challen- ge“. This permanent route for ski tourers takes them from the Diavolezza valley station beside, or off, the piste right up to the top station, covering a vertical distance of about 1000 metres. This ground- breaking project provides for the first time a safe and clearly marked route where ski tourers can train. Skiers can time themselves using the free Corvatsch Diavolezza Lagalb app. All users of the app are automatically entered in a competition with some great prizes. Lagalb On Wednesday 19 December 2018, Lagalb will also start its winter season. The Engadin mountain for connoisseurs offers the ultimate snow sports experience. Whether you want to go carving on the steepest prepared piste in Graubünden, make fresh tracks on previously untouched slopes covered in deep snow or just laze around on the sunshine terrace at the mountain restaurant – there‘s so- mething for everyone here. At Lagalb, winter sports fans can buy single journey tickets, so they can decide for themselves when and how often they enjoy these amazing slopes. Food and drink Lagalb fans and visitors can look forward to varied and top-quality gastronomic offerings. With typical homely Swiss specialities and some delicious desserts, they are in for a real treat. In the heart of this fairy-tale mountain world, the Lagalb is a magical place for a fine lunch, either inside the rustic restaurant or out on the wonderful sunshine terrace with its panoramic views over beautiful Lago Bianco, into the Poschiavo valley and further south into the Valtellina. Club 8848 During the 1970s, a club was founded by the name of „Club 8847, Piz Lagalb – Mount Everest“, with the aim of fostering community spirit between visitors and locals. Now the organisation is being revi- ved. At the season opening event on 21 & 22 December 2018, the new „Club 8848“ will be officially declared open.

Photo credit: Steffi Eger 1 Tectonic overview from Carta Geologica della Valmalenco. Data contributed by Reto Gieré. Published by Lyasis Edizioni, Sondrio, 2004 2 Foreword … In the late summer of 2018, fifteen students, one intrepid van driver, and one native Alpine expert set out on a twelve-day hiking expedition across the Swiss and Italian Alps. This journey marked the third year that Dr. Reto Gieré has led students on a geological, historical, and gustatorial tour of his home. As a geology course, Penn in the Alps takes an ecological approach on the study of Alpine culture. Lectures range from topics on Earth sciences to Alpine folk instruments, while emphasizing the interdependence between the natural environment and human livelihood. The following pages present each student’s research paper on a selected aspect of the Alps or the Earth entire. The second part of the book contains their diary entries, in which each author shares their own gelato-permeated experience. 3 Hiking through the Cardinello Gorge near Montespluga, Italy. • The Fairy-Tale Mountain World Is Ready for Winter
MEDIA DOCUMENTATION FOR THE FAIRY-TALE MOUNTAIN SCENERY The fairy-tale mountain world is ready for winter Corvatsch AG and Diavolezza Lagalb AG are now partner companies and will start their fourth winter together on 17 October 2020 on the Diavolezza, continuing to position themselves as honest, attractive, creative, friend- ly in a typically Swiss way and firmly rooted in their locality. Experiences such as the Club 8848 Challenge and the Lagalb Trophy, and the wide range of food and drink providers, reflect these core values. Corvatsch AG and Diavolezza Lagalb AG are looking forward to the winter season. After the season came to an abrupt end last March, Corvatsch AG and Diavolezza Lagalb AG are now doing all they can to offer winter sports fans a fantastic and safe experience in the snow again this winter. In addition to the snow sports, there are plenty of new things to discover in our fabulous mountain world: at the Diavolezza valley station the “VR Glacier Experience“ opened in October, while at the Corvatsch top station the whisky manufacturer ORMA has worked in partnership with Corvatsch AG to build the highest whisky distillery in the world. Covid-19 and the rail- & cableways of the Upper Engadin Skiing and snowboarding will be a bit different this season. Nevertheless, we are confident that this winter once again visitors to our winter sports areas will be able to spend some wonderful and relaxing days skiing here – after all, with over 300 km of slopes, there‘s plenty of space for social distancing! The rail- & cableways of the Upper Engadin have implemented all the safety recommendations from Seilbahnen Schweiz (Swiss Ropeways Association), and the restaurants on the mountain those from GastroSuisse.

The stretch was originally operated with steam engines but electrifi ed in 1919. Despite continuous adaptations to changing requirements, the original alignment has been preserved virtually throughout and is still used for its original purpose. The Bernina line was constructed between 1906 and 1910 as an electrifi ed surface railway linked with the power stations on the south side of the Bernina Pass, and for better access to the natu- ral scenery that is so attractive to tourists. However, modifi cations to the alignment and inno- vations in terms of snow clearance and protective measures for the track proved necessary to permit services to be operated all the year round.
