We are publishing this series in response to the growing number of suggestions from our readers, who want more coverage of more people in Biography Today.Several volumes, covering Artists, Authors, Scientists and Inven- tors, Sports Figures, and World Leaders, have appeared thus far in the Subject Series. Each of these hardcover volumes is 200 pages in length and covers approximately 12 individuals of interest to readers ages 9 and above. The length and format of the entries will be like those found in the regular is- sues of BiographyToday, but there is no duplication betWeen the regular se- ries and the special subject volumes. The Plan of the Work As with the regular issues of BiographyToday, this special subject volume on Authors was especially created to appeal to young readers in a format they can enjoy reading and readily understand. Each volume contains alphabeti- cally arranged sketches. Each entry provides at least one picture of the indi- vidual profiled, and bold-faced rubrics lead the reader to information on birth, youth, early memories, education, first jobs, marriage and family, career highlights, memorable experiences, hobbies, and honors and awards. Each of the entries ends with a list of easily accessible sources designed to lead the student to further reading on the individual and a current address. Obituary entries are also included, written to provide a perspective on the individual's entire career. Obituaries are clearly marked in both the table of contents and at the beginning of the entry. Biographies are prepared by Omnigraphics editors after extensive research, utilizing the most current materials available. Those sources that are general- ly available to students appear in the list of further reading at the end of the sketch. Indexes Beginning with all publications in 1999, a new Index is appearing in BiographyToday. In an effort to make the index easier to use, we have com- bined the Name and General Index into one, called the General Index. This new index contains the names of all individuals who have appeared in BiographyTodaysince the series began. The names appear in bold faced type, 5 followed by the issue in which they appeared. The General Index also con- tains the occupations and ethnic and minority origins of individuals profiled. The General Index is cumulative, including references to all individuals who have appeared in the Biography Today General Series and the Biography Today Special Subject volumes since the series began in 1992. The Birthday Index and Places of Birth Index will continue to appear in all Special Subject volumes. Our Advisors This volume was reviewed by an Advisory Board comprised of librarians, children's literature specialists, and reading instructors so that we could make sure that the concept of this publication to provide a readable and accessi- ble biographical magazine for young readerswas on target. They evaluated the title as it developed, and their suggestions have proved invaluable. Any errors, however, are ours alone. We'd like to list the Advisory Board mem- bers, and to thank them for their efforts. • Beyond Westworld
“We Don’t Know Exactly How They Work”: Making Sense of Technophobia in 1973 Westworld, Futureworld, and Beyond Westworld Stefano Bigliardi Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane - Morocco Abstract This article scrutinizes Michael Crichton’s movie Westworld (1973), its sequel Futureworld (1976), and the spin-off series Beyond Westworld (1980), as well as the critical literature that deals with them. I examine whether Crichton’s movie, its sequel, and the 1980s series contain and convey a consistent technophobic message according to the definition of “technophobia” advanced in Daniel Dinello’s 2005 monograph. I advance a proposal to develop further the concept of technophobia in order to offer a more satisfactory and unified interpretation of the narratives at stake. I connect technophobia and what I call de-theologized, epistemic hubris: the conclusion is that fearing technology is philosophically meaningful if one realizes that the limitations of technology are the consequence of its creation and usage on behalf of epistemically limited humanity (or artificial minds). Keywords: Westworld, Futureworld, Beyond Westworld, Michael Crichton, androids, technology, technophobia, Daniel Dinello, hubris. 1. Introduction The 2016 and 2018 HBO series Westworld by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy has spawned renewed interest in the 1973 movie with the same title by Michael Crichton (1942-2008), its 1976 sequel Futureworld by Richard T. Heffron (1930-2007), and the short-lived 1980 MGM TV series Beyond Westworld. The movies and the series deal with androids used for recreational purposes and raise questions about technology and its risks. I aim at an as-yet unattempted comparative analysis taking the narratives at stake as technophobic tales: each one conveys a feeling of threat and fear related to technological beings and environments.

ABSOlutELY NORMAL CHAOS Setting the Scene Mary Lou Finney is less than excited about her assignment to keep a journal over the summer. But then cousin Carl Ray comes to stay with her family, and what starts out as the dull dog days of summer quickly turns into the wildest roller coaster ride of all time. How was Mary Lou supposed to know what would happen with Carl Ray and the ring? Or with her boy-crazy best friend, Beth Ann? Or with the permanently pink Alex Cheevey? Suddenly, a boring school project becomes a record of the most incredible, unbelievable summer of Mary Lou’s life. Before Reading Absolutely Normal Chaos begins with a letter from Mary Lou to her teacher, Mr. Birkway, begging him not to read her summer journals. Ask the class if they have ever kept a journal. Would they like their teacher reading it? Why or why not? Discussion Questions 1. Describe Mary Lou’s relationship with Alex Cheevey. What is 5. Any distribution, dissemination or duplication of this docu- ment is strictly prohibited. SYNOPSIS Why is it that some countries seem to be continually mired in cyclical wars, political instability and economic crises? The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one such a place, a mineral-rich Central African country that, over the last two decades, has seen more than five million conflict-related deaths, multiple regime changes and the wholesale impoverishment of its people. Yet though this ongoing conflict is the world’s bloodiest since WWII, little is known in the West about the players or stakes involved. THIS IS CONGO provides an immersive and unfiltered look into the Africa’s longest continuing conflict and those who are surviving within it. By following four compelling characters — a whistleblower, a patriotic military commander, a mineral dealer and a displaced tailor — the film offers viewers a truly Congolese perspective on the problems that plague this lushly beautiful nation. Colonel ‘Kasongo’, Mamadou Ndala, Mama Romance and Hakiza Nyantaba exemplify the unique resilience of a people who have lived and died through the generations due to the cycle of brutality generated by this conflict.

  • Michael Crichton
Michael Crichton Genre: Science fiction/Thrillers/Adventure Remember that huge movie years ago called Jurassic Park? Did you know that was based off of Michael Crichton’s book of the same name? Michael Crichton’s books can extremely detailed and involve science, adventure, political and thriller elements. While most famous for Jurassic Park and it’s sequel, The Lost World, he has written many other books tackling a wide range of subjects. The Great Train Robbery is his foray into historical fiction, and Rising Sun is a suspense story with political elements. Read-a-likes Greg Bear If you the science fiction aspect of Crichton, try Greg Bear. The Forge of God is disaster science fiction where two sets of aliens visit Earth and set in motion humanity’s demise. Darwin’s Radio tackles human evolution, where as Blood Music deals with nanotechnology. Philip Kerr Like Crichton, Kerr’s books are in a wide variety of genres. His Bernie Gunther novels, starting with March Violets, start a detective during the World War II period. The Second Angel and The Grid are science fiction thrillers, much like Crichton’s. Dark Matter: The Private Life of Sir Isaac Newton: A Novel is Kerr’s stab at historical mystery. John Darnton A scientific thriller writer, Darnton’s novels explore human cloning, evolution, and the soul. His book Mind Catcher deals with whether souls can be transferred to a computer chip. Two scientists get caught up in a conspiracy when they discover ancient ancestors of human in Neanderthal. Steven Alten If you have a taste for science fiction thrillers that are on the weird side, try Alten’s books.

I was interested in elucidating the ways in which this reality, which formed the basis for such fiction, was transformed by the writer in his/her work and the reasons behind the transformation. Since my own professional activity has been related to the sciences, I chose to study the novels of Michael Crichton, a commercially-successful writer whose credentials and practice qualify him as an author of professional-based fiction as defined by Michel Petit in his 1999 article “La fiction à substrat professionnel: une autre voie d'accès à l'anglais de spécialité”.

  • A Heuristic Event: Reconsidering The
‘A heuristic event’: reconsidering the problem of the Johnsian conversation Amy K. Hamlin Does it mean anything? -Leo Steinberg, ‘Jasper Johns: the First Seven Years of His Art’, 1962 It is one of the great idées reçues in the history of contemporary art that Jasper Johns is difficult to interview. Despite his otherwise affable rapport, he is alleged to stonewall his interlocutors by blocking their efforts to find meaning in his artworks and intentions. He has given many interviews in the course of his career.1 These dialogues contain plenty of parry and joust that, at first glance, appear to yield very little insight. In what Michael Crichton dubbed the ‘Johnsian conversation’,2 the reader routinely encounters the sort of exchange that the late Leo Steinberg fictionalized in his now canonical essay on Johns in 1962.3 The interview, as Steinberg later acknowledged, was not transcribed from an actual dialogue, but This is a revised and expanded version of a paper entitled “Interviewing Johns” that I presented on February 22, 2008 at the Annual Conference of the College Art Association in Dallas. Richard Shiff chaired the Art History Open Session entitled “New Criticism and an Old Problem.” I would like to thank Richard Shiff and Jonathan Katz for their insights following that presentation. I would also like to thank Charles Haxthausen and Wayne Roosa for their incisive comments and suggestions. 1 On the occasion of the exhibition Jasper Johns: A Retrospective held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1996, Kirk Varnedoe edited an anthology of Johns’ writings, sketchbook notes, and interviews that complemented the exhibition catalogue.
