I study the conventillos (tenement buildings) of two traditionally Afro-Uruguayan neighbourhoods in Montevideo, Barrio Sur and Palermo. These neighbourhoods are considered the cradle of Afro-Uruguayan culture and identity. The conventillos have been immortalized in paintings, souvenirs, songs, and books. Over the years most of the residents were evicted due to demolitions, which peaked during Uruguay’s military dictatorship (1973-1984). I address the paradox of how a community can be materially marginalized, yet symbolically celebrated, a process that is evident in other American nations (Brazil, Colombia, etc.). I show how race, class, and gender are entangled in folkloric depictions of the conventillo to constitute a limited notion of blackness that naturalizes the relationship between Afro-Uruguayans, music, sexuality, and domestic work. The folklorization of the space and it residents is shown to be a “fetishization” which enhances the whiteness of the national identity, while confining the parameters of black citizenship and belonging. Utilizing a methodology that draws on cultural geography, critical race, postcolonial, and feminist theory, my dissertation analyzes the various ways that the Barrio Sur/Palermo conventillo has been imagined, represented, and experienced. -
Carnival As a Transnational Cultural Phenomenon
CARNIVAL AS A TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL PHENOMENON Carnival under British rule covers a period that is marked by an imperial culture of domination and an ever-growing culture of resistance and claim to national power. In small countries like Malta, foreign presence domi- nated any form of local society long before the arrival of the British. Colonisation was a reality that the inhabitants had to contend with for the larger part of their history. The British period started out with the eager delivery of the islands into British hands in 1800, and ended with Independence in 1964. The acquisition of Independence constituted a major political turning point in Malta’s history; it paved the way for Malta’s social and economic growth that enabled the country, forty years later, to join the European Union. Within the colonial context, Carnival in Malta may be seen as part of a more general phenomenon that foregrounded culture as the key driving force in the negotiation between local and colonial identity. However, this cultural practice was played out differently according to the particular his- tories and socio-political concerns of the various countries celebrating Carnival. Consequently, the different cultural manifestations of Carnival have to be examined first and foremost in relation to the individual cir- cumstances of the particular country, which may then be paralleled to similar happenings beyond. The fact that Carnival on the islands has lasted from before 15201 to today traces a long cultural lineage in the celebrations and their uninter- rupted continuity up to the present. Esta estructura posibilita y acelera el proceso de construcción de identidades, pero también aumenta las contiendas entre los distintos actores sociales que pueden reivindicarlas. El trabajo llama la atención hacia el incremento de las reivindicaciones identitarias afro-americanas en Buenos Aires en los últimos años y analiza las disputas que se han producido en esta ciudad entre afro-argentinos, afro-uruguayos y practicantes blancos de religiones afrobrasileñas por el derecho a presentar públicamente la tradición negra del país, y a reclamar un linaje con la misma. Examina, asimismo, cómo las variables clase, raza, nacionalidad y posibilidad de presentar una performance negra influyen en esta contienda. 2 The notions of tradition, history, culture and ethnicity have come under close scrutiny in the past decades. The idea that these concepts had fixed meanings that the anthropologist had to unravel has been increasingly questioned. It is quite appropriate to consider that there is a paradigm shift happening, inasmuch as the more recent studies increasingly have started regarding the processes of construction of ethnicity (Barth 1969, Royce 1982), culture (Wagner 1975) history (Guss 1993, 1996) and tradition (Linnekin 1983, Hanson 1989, Friedmann 1992). -

GÉRARD*, Marie-jasé JOLI!!ET** On sait que, depuis longtemps déjà, l’identité se trouve au centre d’un nombre considérable d’études et de débats ; c’est au point que certains chercheurs se demandent s’il ne s’agit pas là d’un concept dépassé, appliqué à des réalités mieux saisissables, aujourd’hui, par d’autres voies (celles d’une anthropologie plus directement politique, par exemple). Telle n’est évidemment pas notre conception : l’intérêt croissant que suscitent les sociétés pluriculturelles ou métisses doit plutôt pousser, selon nous, à remettre en œuvre ce concept, dans le cadre d’un renouvellement de la problématique concernée.
