Houses of Lake Road Walking Tour Lake Forest, IL About Lake Road 1881 map • Lake Road is one of the very few straight roads in the park-like, curvilinear Plan of Lake Forest by landscape designer Almerin Hotchkiss (1857), running north-south across the deep ravines alongside the steep Lake Michigan bluff edge. The bluffs here rise 50’ to 100’ above the lake. • Due to the riparian nature of the landscape, many homes along Lake Road are located much closer to the street’s edge than elsewhere in east Lake Forest. • Most of the earliest homes and estates in town were built further inland, closer to the railroad station or Lake Forest University. The now- demolished Amzi Benedict residence (see 810 Lake Road) was an exception. • It was during the country estate era of the 1890s and early 1900s that home sites began to populate Lake Road, both the result of new development from Chicagoans building summer places and the subdivision of larger parcels by second-generation Lake Foresters. Few of the homes from this period are extant (see Ioka, Briar Hall, House in the Woods) – Halcyon Lodge (1350 Lake Road) is an exception. • Most homes on this tour come from one of three periods: pre-WWI 1910s (Shaw, Adler); mid-1920s-1930s (Adler, Frazier, Lindeberg, Anderson); or 1950s-1960s (Frazier, Colburn, Cerny, Milman). The Tour Start at the south end of Lake Road (south of Spring Lane) and walk north toward Lake Forest Cemetery Notes: • Some listed homes have been demolished; others may not be visible due to vegetation or fences/walls. -

The Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald As Part of an Ongoing Series for the Lewis and Clark Library's Adult Education Progra
The Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald As part of an ongoing series for The Lewis and Clark Library’s Adult Education program, Randall LeCocq is offering a class/discussion group on the short stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Classes will be held Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 AM, in the Library’s large meeting room. A registration sheet is available at the Information Desk, which has handouts of the assigned readings. For the website: The class will look at Fitzgerald’s life and work, focusing on five of his most highly acclaimed short stories. Using these stories, we will examine some of Fitzgerald’s central themes: young love and the loss of illusion, the perils of wealth, and “emotional bankruptcy” which comes from fast living. The five short stories will take us through four phases of Fitzgerald’s life, from early success, through Expatriate life in Europe, to Zelda’s breakdown and his own “crack up,” and eventually to his own rejuvenation. We will conclude with Fitzgerald’s non-fiction essays commenting on the Jazz Age and Great Depression, and causes for his own decline. Randall LeCocq, a Helena resident, holds a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University, where he specialized in literature and art history. He has taught previous courses at the Library on the novels and short stories of Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. The United States were launched towards an upswing of economic prosperity, which translated into social and cultural changes. As the 1920’s began, these shifts became particularly important for the development of the new role of women in society. Empowerment, financial independence and sexual liberation were some of the objectives to achieve by a section of the female community. Along these lines and as a way of self-expression, ‘women embraced the new freedoms, cutting their hair, applying makeup, and tossing out dowdy fashions of the past for shorter skirts and slinkier more formfitting attire’ (Time-Life 11). -

The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

Vibrant, deadly, deceiving, innocent - colors are the dominating symbols utilized by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his masterpiece The Great Gatsby . Daniel J. Schneider, the Chairman of the Department of English for Windham College, states, "The vitality and beauty of F. Scott Fitzgerald's writing are perhaps nowhere more strikingly exhibited than in his handling of the color symbols in The Great Gatsby." Throughout the book characters, places, and objects are given "life" by colors, especially the more prominent ones. The colors of white, yellow, and green are the most eminent, easily distinguishable from the rest, and representing purity, death, and hope. Such strong symbolic colors are seen continually, and exist to provide a higher and more in depth meaning to the book. "White is one of the main symbolic colors in The Great Gatsby, representing purity, innocence, and honesty" (Adam H.). Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Jordan Baker, and Daisy Buchanan all directly exemplify Adam's statement. Nick considers himself the only truly honest person he knows (Fitzgerald 60) and often wears white, such as when he attends one of Gatsby's parties for the first time. This event being considerably significant, Nick wanted to make the best impression he could - that is, appearing untainted and honest - for Gatsby and the other guests. Gatsby also adorns himself in white when he finally reunites with Daisy after five years of separation. Scott Fitzgerald in St. Paul, Minnesota on January 4, 1915 there was instant chemistry between them. That night in her diary, Ginevra exclaimed, “Scott perfectly darling am dipped about.” For his part, Scott was equally smitten with Ginevra; although he was due back in Princeton immediately, Scott stayed over an extra day to spend more time with the brunette debutante from Chicago. Upon his return to Princeton, Scott immediately sent Ginevra a special delivery letter; according to the customs of the time, such a letter constituted Scott’s formal declaration that he was interested in pursuing a correspondence with Ginevra. A vivacious and fun- loving girl, Ginevra was no stranger to the importance of a “special delie” and the epistolary game was afoot.
