Fauquier County Public Schools News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 3, 2017 Karen Parkinson, Coordinator of Information Phone (540) 422-7031 [email protected] FCPS AND LFCC JOINTLY RECEIVE GOVERNOR’S AWARD Fauquier County Public Schools and Lord Fairfax Community College are among the first-ever recipients of the Governor’s Award for Excellence and Innovation in Education; out of more than 120 nominations, 13 were selected for recognition. In a ceremony at the Executive Mansion on Oct. 26, Governor Terry McAuliffe presented the inaugural award to representatives from FCPS and LFCC as the two entities jointly received the award in the “community partnerships and collaboration” category. An Oct. 27 news release from the Governor’s Office noted, “The school district has collaborated with the Fauquier Excellence in Education Foundation (FEIEF) and the Lord Fairfax Community College – Fauquier Campus to connect students and parents to the opportunities available at Lord Fairfax Community College.” Attending the event to receive the award were Dr. David Jeck, division superintendent; Major Warner, associate superintendent for instruction; Dr. Amy Acors, director of instruction; Donna Grove, vice chair of the Fauquier County School Board (Cedar Run District); Dr. Christopher Coutts, provost, LFCC; Stacie Griffin, chairman of FEIEF; and Joe Martin, president of the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce. “Over the last four years, my administration has worked hard to reduce the achievement gap, improve accountability, and expand opportunities for career exposure and experiential learning in our public schools. McAuliffe. “Excellent education is the key to unlocking the potential in our children, our commonwealth, and the new Virginia economy.” Martin, who nominated FCPS, LFCC and FEIEF for the award, wrote in his nomination letter, “This community partnership, growing in strength, is a model to be followed across our state of a commitment to evolving our educational practices as our needs are evolving in the Commonwealth.” His letter said he feels that Fauquier County’s educational organizations’ willingness to move forward together in new directions and to try new programs gives the business community a sense of assurance that local education and business leaders will prepare students well for whatever they pursue, whether higher education or the work force. The Governor’s Award recognized the value of the collaborative efforts undertaken by LFCC and FCPS, supported by FEIEF, especially toward making school counselors and students more aware of program availability through the following: • Creating programming that crosses a multitude of stakeholders including students, FCPS staff and the community at large • Inviting both middle and high school counselors to a session at LFCC Fauquier Campus to learn more about programs LFCC offers, i.e., two-year programs, acceptance of dual-enrollment credit, Workforce Solutions and credentialing programs • Expanding program offerings for students especially through the expansion of the LFCC Fauquier Campus, at Vint Hill and at the Boys and Girls Club in Warrenton • Giving all FCPS eighth graders the opportunity, through the financial support of the FEIEF, to visit the LFCC Fauquier Campus where they rotated through hands-on sessions including student life and engagement, career exploration, health professions, financial aid, dual enrollment, STEM and trades. • Supporting a visit of selected seniors from FCPS high schools in the spring to LFCC, also funded through the financial support of the FEIEF, so students could envision themselves there with LFCC providing mentoring and support for these typically underrepresented students so they might see a pathway to continue their education • Inviting counselors to get an up-close view of the area’s most popular institutions during a pre-college night event hosted by LFCC in order to ensure counselors have access to information to help them support students in decision making As part of the continuing partnership this year, FCPS and LFCC will pilot vertical team meetings among English and history faculty at the high school and college level, hoping to provide Fauquier County children a seamless kindergarten to college experience. In addition, the two will work to share their experiences with the community through a shared presentation to the Leadership Fauquier Class of 2018, a 10-month community leadership development program that engages local leaders in the communities they serve. Governor McAuliffe’s new awards initiative also recognizes outstanding educators, leaders, schools and divisions in these other four award categories: innovation in education, supporting school readiness, preparing students for the new Virginia economy and closing the achievement gap. “Every day, Virginia’s education professionals make incredible contributions to our communities and students,” said Secretary of Education Dietra Trent. “This new award is one small way we can recognize their commitment to providing their students with everything they need to succeed in school and in life.” .
