• The History of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada
The History of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada 1889 – The first (and last) Catholic Lay Congress took place in Baltimore that November. Members of the Catholic press were overlooked in original invitations, but received them in August. L. W. Reilly, an editor in Columbus, Ohio, sent out a circular inviting press people to the Congress, and Maurice Francis Egan, former newspaperman teaching at the University of Notre Dame, urged editors to come to “cultivate fellow feeling” and force “unscrupulous advertising agents to be honest.” If Catholic editors neglected to unite, he suggested, there would soon be no Catholic papers at all. A group of Catholic editors and business managers, representing 26 Catholic journals, met informally November 10 at the Hotel Rennert. The only action taken was to set a date for a Convention the following May in Cincinnati, Ohio. 1890 – That Convention met May 7 at the Dennison House in Cincinnati. Officers from the previous November meeting (Father F. Graham of the Catholic Tribune, Dubuque, the chairman, and Conde’ B. Pallen of Church Progress, secretary) conducted the meeting, with representatives of 14 papers attending. They voted to establish a permanent association named The Catholic Press Association of the United States. Dues were to be $5 per year for each publication, payable in advance, with a meeting the first Wednesday of May each year. 1891 – The next meeting convened May 6 in Xavier Hall at the College of the Jesuits in New York, with more than 40 publications represented. Delegates approved incorporation of the Association, employing correspondents in Rome, Paris, London and Berlin, establishing an advertising bureau and a purchasing agency for quantity buying.

  • The American Catholic Church As a Political Institution
DOI 10.1515/for-2014-0011 The Forum 2014; 11(4): 603–621 Sean M. Theriault* The American Catholic Church as a Political Institution Abstract: In this article, I place the American Catholic Church into a broader his- torical and global perspective, giving context to both the world in which it oper- ates and the decisions it makes. I argue that several of the decisions that were made by the earliest Church leaders continue to reverberate today. Furthermore, the circumstances under which Catholicism made its way to the New World not only gives meaning to its past path, but provides clues about its future direction. These historical and geopolitical angles must be assessed when evaluating Pope Francis’s challenge to the Vatican, the American Church, and Catholicism around the globe. *Corresponding author: Sean M. Theriault, University of Texas, Austin, TX, USA, e-mail: [email protected] Introduction As Jesus traveled the literal and figurative road to his passion, death, and res- urrection in Jerusalem, the authorities tried on numerous occasions to trip him up. On one noted attempt, they asked him: “Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?” (Matthew 22:17).1 Jesus, after chastising them for trying to trap him, responds: “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:21).2 The questioners were hoping to elicit an answer from Jesus that would either run him afoul of the civil authorities or have him slight his own Father. Jesus, in doing neither, proffers an early rationale that would ultimately safeguard religious expression from the authority of the state.

  • Cardinal Law, Whose Legacy Was Marred by Sex Abuse Scandal, Dies
Cardinal Law, whose legacy was marred by sex abuse scandal, dies VATICAN CITY — Cardinal Bernard F. Law, who had been one of the United States’ most powerful and respected bishops until his legacy was blemished by the devastating sexual abuse of minors by priests in his Archdiocese of Boston, died early Dec. 20 in Rome at the age of 86. Before the abuse scandal forced his resignation in 2002, Cardinal Law had been a leading church spokesman on issues ranging from civil rights to international justice, from abortion to poverty, from Catholic-Jewish relations and ecumenism to war and peace. Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston said in a statement Dec. 20, “As archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Law served at a time when the church failed seriously in its responsibilities to provide pastoral care for her people, and with tragic outcomes failed to care for the children of our parish communities.” Cardinal O’Malley also recognized that his predecessor’s death “brings forth a wide range of emotions on the part of many people. I am particularly cognizant of all who experienced the trauma of sexual abuse by clergy, whose lives were so seriously impacted by those crimes, and their families and loved ones. To those men and women, I offer my sincere apologies for the harm they suffered, my continued prayers and my promise that the archdiocese will support them in their effort to achieve healing.” Cardinal O’Malley said Cardinal Law would be buried in Rome, where he had his last assignment. According to the Vatican, his funeral Mass was to be celebrated the afternoon of Dec.

Brill Research Perspectives in Jesuit Studies 2.2 (2020) 1–112 brill.com/brp Jesuits in the North American Colonies and the United States Faith, Conflict, Adaptation Catherine O’Donnell Arizona State University, Tempe, USA [email protected] Abstract From Eusebio Kino to Daniel Berrigan, and from colonial New England to contem- porary Seattle, Jesuits have built and disrupted institutions in ways that have funda- mentally shaped the Catholic Church and American society. As Catherine O’Donnell demonstrates, Jesuits in French, Spanish, and British colonies were both evangelists and agents of empire. John Carroll envisioned an American church integrated with Protestant neighbors during the early years of the republic; nineteenth-century Jesuits, many of them immigrants, rejected Carroll’s ethos and created a distinct Catholic infrastructure of schools, colleges, and allegiances. The twentieth century involved Jesuits first in American war efforts and papal critiques of modernity, and then (in ac- cord with the leadership of John Courtney Murray and Pedro Arrupe) in a rethinking of their relationship to modernity, to other faiths, and to earthly injustice. O’Donnell’s narrative concludes with a brief discussion of Jesuits’ declining numbers, as well as their response to their slaveholding past and involvement in clerical sexual abuse. CATHOLIC PRESS ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020 CATHOLIC PRESS ASSOCIATION An association of organizations and individual members committed to sharing the Church’s mission to preach the Good News to all. OUR MISSION The mission of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada is to build and strengthen the value, effectiveness and identity of Catholic media by facilitating the professional development and spiritual growth of our members. We contribute to the Church’s mission of communicating the Good News and evangelizing the modern world by engaging and supporting the content creators and distributors of Catholic media. 2 / Catholic Press Association 2020 ANNUAL REPORT MESSAGE FROM THE CPA PRESIDENT Dear members, Each year, I become more convinced of the crucial role Catholic media plays in the life of the Church. This year is no exception. During the coronavirus pandemic, you stepped up your work, relying even more heavily on various digital platforms. All the while, you maintained print publications, reaching many faithful Catholics who still look forward to hard copy editions. Catholic media has often made me think of the Prayer of St. Francis. You are instruments of God’s peace, sowing love where there is hatred, sharing faith with those who doubt and bringing light to the darkness. But you also know, as the prayer says, that “it is in giving that we receive.” That’s the way I feel about our association. Since the onset of the pandemic, the board of directors has focused on the changing needs of our members.
