MEST Journal DOI 10.12709/mest.05.05.02.07 THE HSR AS AN INNOVATIVE AND ECOLOGICAL MODE OF TRANSPORT Antoaneta Kirova “Todor Kableshkov” University of Transport, Sofia, Bulgaria ©MESTE JEL Category: L92, O18, R41 Abstract High-speed rails (HSR) connects major cities in developed countries, as listed in the table below. Internationally HSR is developed only in Europe, aiming at the use of trans-European transport network (TEN-T) to link all high-speed lines on the continent into a proper integrated European high-speed network. In terms of the economic development, it is considered that HSR redirects development from one area to another and as far as safety is concerned, most potential rail passengers accept aviation as a safer mode of transport. Another positive outcome is the provision of a better choice of travel mode for public transport users, who already have a lot of options represented by a low-cost bus, a fast plane or a personalized car trip. The general review proves, that besides discussing pros and cons, among which the huge investments, the lack of certainty in the future use of HSR there are positive signs of development. The new trends envisage HSR for freight as well passenger traffic. Still, there is a danger that newer technologies in transportation will boost forward in the time necessary to build a high-speed route. The question who will use the high-speed lines, when air travel provides the high speed, the self- driven cars allow for independent travels and public carriers provide Internet access and comfort to work on board remains. -

Juni 2017) Anlässlich des zehnjährigen Bestehens des deutsch- französischen Hochgeschwindigkeitsverkehrs wurde heute in Paris ein ICE auf den Namen „Paris“ getauft. Birgit Bohle, Vorstandsvorsitzende DB Fernverkehr AG, Patrick Jeantet, Mitglied des Konzernvorstandes SNCF, Vorsitzender des Vorstands von SNCF Réseau, und Rachel Picard, Vorstandsvorsitzende SNCF Voyages, nahmen die Namensgebung im Beisein zahlreicher Ehrengäste vor. „Gemeinsam mit den rund 16 Millionen Fahrgästen in ICE und TGV haben wir seit 2007 eine außergewöhnliche Erfolgsgeschichte geschrieben“, sagte Birgit Bohle in Paris. „Und sie wird weiter fortgesetzt: Seit Einführung der Hochgeschwindigkeitsverkehre sind die Fahrgastzahlen um über 60 Prozent gestiegen. Viewpoint The low-cost puzzle for long-haul trains Will we see low-cost carrier models in rail? Long-haul (high-speed) rail has been gaining popularity globally in recent years – especially in Western Europe and East Asia. Due to the growing popularity among travelers and branching out of incumbent operators, it is likely that we will see diversification of business models in the near future. The airline industry saw such diversification in the late 1990s. Here, low-cost-carrier models have been particularly successful. Recently, the low-cost movement has also started to transform the coach industry. Could rail be next? First indications are shown by operators launching low-cost carrier models in France and Belgium and an unconventional player entering the market in Germany. This article examines the current status quo and outlines the low-cost carrier model as it is known in the aviation industry, before inspecting current low-cost models and evaluating whether spread is likely. PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE – LA PLAINE SAINT DENIS, 28 FEBRUARY 2020 SNCF GROUP 2019 ANNUAL RESULTS 2019 MOMENTUM HALTED BY DECEMBER STRIKE • Operating performance linked to continued investment in core programmes targeting saf ety (-21% fall in major safety events), robust rail service (annual on-time arrivals at a historic high of 89%) and passenger information (notice of delays up from 64% to 79%). • Improved customer satisfaction : a historic 85.9% for TER regional rail (+4.2 pts) and 82% for TGV high-speed rail (+3 pts). • Group revenue up 5.1%, driven by steady growth in passenger traffic at Voyageurs. Full - year revenue totalled €35.1bn in 2019 . • The multi-sector strike linked to French pension reforms that began in December saw SNCF go all out to limit consequences for its customers, and led to an operating loss of €614m at year-end 2019. • Buoyant business combined with strict financial discipline generated €560 m in gains in competitiveness that boosted EBITDA despite the strike, and limited its impact on results. • Recur ring net profit was a negative €301m (and would have reached a positive €313m without the strike). • Investments reached a record high of €10bn (all funding sources combined). Of that total, 95% went into the French rail network , benefitting customers, regional development and suppliers. • SNCF recruited 12,600 new employees in France in 2019, with one-third hired for jobs in rail operations. SNCF Group is one of the country’s largest employers. The Board of Directors of SNCF SA met today under the chairmanship of Jean-Pierre Farandou to approve SNCF Group’s consolidated financial statements for financial year 2019. -
