SPECIAL COLLECTION—PETER’S PENCE -Be a Witness of Charity June 27th—PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION — This week, we have the Peter’s Pence Collection, which unites us and Catholics around the world more closely with the Holy Father in two ways: it supports the structures of the Holy See through which the Pope governs the Church as well as his charitable efforts to assist victims of war, oppression, natural disasters, and others most in need. For more information, visit http://www.peterspence.va/en.html. Thank you for your generosity. 2 PLEASE REMEMBER QUEEN OF ANGELS PARISH OR ST. JOSEPH PARISH IN YOUR WILL. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS THE APOSTLES’ COLUMN June 27, 2021 Do Not Be Afraid….Only Have Faith…. “Do not be afraid to be the saints of the new millennium .” Pope St. John Paul II Today’s Gospel (Mk 5:21-43) points to the power of belief in Jesus Christ. When we have unshakable faith we have absolute trust, and we realize without doubt that every breath we take, and every step on our journey is for God’s glory and the sal- vation of souls, especially our own. Consider what each of us gains from knowing God: His authority and compassion calm our fears and strengthen our faith, and in the end lead us to eternal beatitude if we open our hearts to receive His love. Who do you identify with as you read this beautiful passage? Are you in the crowd; or Jairus; maybe the hemorrhagic woman; or one of the disciples? Jesus calls each of us to Himself right where we are at, and He calls us to trust Him, not just on the surface of our lives, but deep inside. The Church is in a very challenging time, with so much confusion and complacency; and yet each of us is blessed to be an integral part of the transformation. As I read this passage, I imagine the Church as the little girl: Jesus is calling the Church to get up. He’s calling us to get up from our selfishness and to love that which is difficult to love, whether it be a person or a situation: a challenging spouse, child, parent, friend, neighbor, boss or co-worker; those who persecute us for living our faith; a struggling marriage; a job that is utterly miserable; getting old; becoming ill or injured; the loss of someone dear to us; the list is endless…. What if we all get up from our divisions and seek after peace? What if we rise above politics and instead seek to serve the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of those around us? That’s what Jesus did. He showed tender-loving care and mercy to those who were suffering. We are all called to follow His example and be exemplary role models of Christianity by helping to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned, bury the dead and give alms to the poor. We are called to share our faith by admonishing sinners, instructing those who are uninformed, counseling those who doubt, having patience with those in error, forgiving others, and praying for the living and the dead. What does it take for us to get up and be the hands and feet of Jesus, His voice and His presence in the world? Are we afraid? Is our faith actually weaker than we think? We cannot be the Church if we disagree with her teachings; we cannot be the Church if we are embarrassed to live our Faith publicly; we cannot be the Church if we are continually disobedient to the authority of priests and bishops, or when we stubbornly cling to our rigid attachments (possessions, ideas, points of view, etc.). When we begin to take Jesus seriously we will become a healing grace, both for ourselves and others; and we will slowly grow into the saints He has called us to be. The Apostles’ Column comes to an end this weekend as we once again transition our pastoral leadership and welcome Fr. Guarino as our new Priest Administrator. It is my hope that the column has brought many souls closer to God this past year as we explored ways to grow in holiness through our lay apostolates. Remember always the three pillars of holiness: prayer, service in the Church and community. As you advance on your spiritual journey, do an occasional self-assessment of these three pillars, and if any one is lacking or being neglected, put in the effort to reinforce it. The Kingdom of God here on earth, in your heart, is built on these pillars…. So do not be afraid; only have faith; and for His glory and the salvation of souls, never let these pillars of holiness crumble.
