SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS THE APOSTLES’ COLUMN June 27, 2021 Do Not Be Afraid….Only Have Faith….

“Do not be afraid to be the saints of the new millennium .” Pope St. John Paul II Today’s Gospel (Mk 5:21-43) points to the power of belief in Jesus Christ. When we have unshakable faith we have absolute trust, and we realize without doubt that every breath we take, and every step on our journey is for God’s glory and the sal- vation of souls, especially our own. Consider what each of us gains from knowing God: His authority and compassion calm our fears and strengthen our faith, and in the end lead us to eternal beatitude if we open our hearts to receive His love. Who do you identify with as you read this beautiful passage? Are you in the crowd; or Jairus; maybe the hemorrhagic woman; or one of the disciples? Jesus calls each of us to Himself right where we are at, and He calls us to trust Him, not just on the surface of our lives, but deep inside. The Church is in a very challenging time, with so much confusion and complacency; and yet each of us is blessed to be an integral part of the transformation. As I read this passage, I imagine the Church as the little girl: Jesus is calling the Church to get up. He’s calling us to get up from our selfishness and to love that which is difficult to love, whether it be a person or a situation: a challenging spouse, child, parent, friend, neighbor, boss or co-worker; those who persecute us for living our faith; a struggling marriage; a job that is utterly miserable; getting old; becoming ill or injured; the loss of someone dear to us; the list is endless…. What if we all get up from our divisions and seek after peace? What if we rise above politics and instead seek to serve the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of those around us? That’s what Jesus did. He showed tender-loving care and mercy to those who were suffering. We are all called to follow His example and be exemplary role models of Christianity by helping to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned, bury the dead and give alms to the poor. We are called to share our faith by admonishing sinners, instructing those who are uninformed, counseling those who doubt, having patience with those in error, forgiving others, and praying for the living and the dead. What does it take for us to get up and be the hands and feet of Jesus, His voice and His presence in the world? Are we afraid? Is our faith actually weaker than we think? We cannot be the Church if we disagree with her teachings; we cannot be the Church if we are embarrassed to live our Faith publicly; we cannot be the Church if we are continually disobedient to the authority of priests and bishops, or when we stubbornly cling to our rigid attachments (possessions, ideas, points of view, etc.). When we begin to take Jesus seriously we will become a healing grace, both for ourselves and others; and we will slowly grow into the saints He has called us to be. The Apostles’ Column comes to an end this weekend as we once again transition our pastoral leadership and welcome Fr. Guarino as our new Priest Administrator. It is my hope that the column has brought many souls closer to God this past year as we explored ways to grow in holiness through our lay apostolates. Remember always the three pillars of holiness: prayer, service in the Church and community. As you advance on your spiritual journey, do an occasional self-assessment of these three pillars, and if any one is lacking or being neglected, put in the effort to reinforce it. The Kingdom of God here on earth, in your heart, is built on these pillars…. So do not be afraid; only have faith; and for His glory and the salvation of souls, never let these pillars of holiness crumble. “You cannot be a half saint; you must be a whole saint or no saint at all.” St. Therese of Lisieux Pax Christi,

Cathy Wiswell, Pastoral Coordinator

PRAYER & DEVOTIONS FEAST DAY OF STS. PETER & PAUL Feast: June 29, Solemnity This day has been made Holy by the passion of the apostles Peter and Paul. For their voice has gone forth to all the world, and to the ends of the earth their message. —Excerpt from EWTN, Catholicism-Sts. Peter and Paul In a sermon in the year 395, St. Augustine of Hippo said of Sts. Peter and Paul: “Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles’ blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching and their confession of faith. But most of all, let us celebrate The Christ for Peter exclaimed, "Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of Eternal Life; and we believe and are convinced that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God." —Exert from Franciscan Media article PRAYER TO SAINTS PETER AND PAUL Blessed Redeemer, Saints Peter and Paul were leaders and models in strengthening the faith of the infant Church, and I ask them to pray for my faith to grow strong. Saint Paul wrote in his second letter to Saint Timothy, “I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have.” Wherever I am still a baby in my relationship with You, weak and uncertain, I ask Saints Peter and Paul to pray for me to grow into spiritual maturity. Help me, O Lord, to increase in faith and trust. Where Your presence is but a spark in me, fan it into a flame that brightens other people’s lives. Saints Peter and Paul, pray for me. Amen.

LEARNING SUNDAY DEVOTIONS | A MEDITATION ON NEXT WEEK’S MASS READINGS July 4, 2021 | 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading—Ezekiel becomes the first prophet called to speak for God in a country outside the Promised Land. With this divine commission comes God’s Spirit, empowering the prophet to carry out his service. God addresses Ezekiel as “son of man,” here simply referring to a human being; the phrase connotes human weakness and mortality, emphasizing the prophet’s need for divine Spirit. God calls Ezekiel to a most difficult task: to prophesy to a people who have long ignored God’s word, rebelled against the divine plan, even attempted to kill prophets whose message they did not wish to hear. Though recognizing the people’s obstinacy, God calls the prophet to speak the Word of the Lord to them, whether they accept it or not. Ultimately, those who survive through captivity and the total destruction of Judah will eventually recognize Ezekiel as truly sent from God. [Ezekiel 2:2-5] Responsorial Psalm—“Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for His mercy.” [Psalm 123] Second Reading—Paul must carry out the work he believes God had given him in the face of resistance, threats, and difficul- ties. Paul received God’s own Spirit, a powerful divine presence within, to carry out his mission despite such hardships. The precise nature of Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” is unknown, but its purpose is clear: he must never congratulate himself, but give thanks to God’s grace, for any success of his mission. It is divine power that Paul—and we—must rely upon, even to the point of rejoicing in our weakness so that Christ may live and work in us, accomplishing far more than our human limitations allow. Paul’s final statement, “when I am weak, then I am strong,” can meet with much resistance in an age that glorifies personal strength and accomplishment.. [2 Corinthians 12:7-10] Gospel—This Gospel reading follows immediately the account of Jesus raising the synagogue official’s daughter. He returns “to His native place” and teaches in the synagogue. But the people perceive this Man as an unschooled carpenter and “Son of Mary.” Clearly, onlookers can hardly accept that this Man who appears all too common and ordinary could teach them any- thing about the meaning of Scripture, which communicates God’s will to the people, and so “they took offense at Him.” The people’s resistance to Jesus indicates lack of faith, and so Jesus cannot perform further mighty deeds. “He was amazed at their lack of faith.” [Mark 5:21-43]
