Employment of political scientists is expected to grow 8 percent from 2010 to 2020. Employment of lawyers is expected to grow by 10 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is expected to grow by 18 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment of probation officers and correctional treatment specialists is expected to grow by 18 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as average for all occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of urban and regional planners is expected to grow 16 percent from 2010 to 2020. Political scientists need a master’s degree or Ph.D. in political science, public administration, or a related field. Most planners work for state and federal government, real estate developers, nonprofits, and planning consulting firms. Planners work throughout the country in all sizes of municipality, but most work in large metropolitan areas.
