SSM BG was established in Jun 2001 at a Government building at Jalan Changkat. We had one class with 8 students run by Pn Mahani Zakaria. The building was shared with another government department and there came a time when we had to move out. After another two moves, we are now at 49, Jalan Sulaiman Batu Gajah.

In January 2019, Sheltered Workshop for students over 20 years of age was set up. We started with 4 trainees and now have 9 young adults. They work at our nursery , learning simples chores like watering the plants, fertilizing and weeding. They are also taught handicrafts especially using recycled materials such as plastic bottles, old CD’s etc. Some contract work is also carried out e.g : tying plastic packet with raffia string.

Both the school and the sheltered workshop are operating from the same premise

GINGER CULTIVATION PROJECT USING FERTIGATION TECHNOLOGY

 Our Special needs workers and instructors started a new agricultural project, planting Bentong Ginger using Fertigation method. From this project, they are able to learn farming methods in a modern way. This project materialized with the grant of RM 50,000 given by JPOKU, Depart- ment of Social Welfare Malaysia under its Down Syndrome Skills Empowerment Training pro- gram.

 Through this project, we were able to obtain knowledge and strengthen our vocational training for Down Syndrome in Agricultural projects. We were given technical assistance by MARDI and State Agriculture Department by providing agricultural training so that the disabled with Down syndrome are able to carry out farming fruitfully and pave the way for a livelihood. We hope that this project will be a source of income to the workshop and be beneficial for them.

 Our workshop produces entrepreneurs with various disabilities who are able to be independent and competitive in society. They are provided new skills that can be applied in their daily work. We aspire to instill skills and create interest through a diversity of projects and products in the

making .

PERAK ASSOCIATION FOR INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED

“ Know me for my abilities, not my disability ” Robert Hensel

The Perak Association for the Intellectually Disabled (PAFID) was formed in 1982 and is under the Royal Patronage of His Royal High- ness, the Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan. Our non-profit organization was established with a mission to help in- tellectually disabled children by providing high quality, affordable de- velopmental education and services. Since our inception we have helped thousands of intellectually disabled children and young adults, their parents and guardians. It was only possible because of generous people like you contributing to this noble cause. PAFID manages five schools (Sekolah Semangat Maju), a Child Care Centre, three sheltered workshops, hostel and a sheltered factory. We currently have an enrolment of 455 special needs children and adults under our care. Many of the young adults are enrolled into the work- shops and factories upon reaching 19 years of age. We are very proud that many of them have found gainful employment thereafter. Their independence from constant care and supervision is a testament to the incredible work our teachers and organization do over the years. The schools managed by PAFID have ensured that intellectually disa- bled persons are not abandoned or marginalized by the public. Indeed, through our school we have had many happy experiences where we have nurtured our students from being difficult children to useful and productive persons. Furthermore, there have been many occasions where we have changed their lives completely by providing them the basic human necessities such as a roof over their heads, food, clothing and of course education and training.
