Sermons for October

2019 Oct 6th - Psalm 37 - World Communion Sunday (Season of Saints kickoff) Observed on the first Sunday in October, this day calls the Church to be the universal, inclusive Church. The day was first observed by Presbyterians in 1936, adopted by the Federal Council of Churches in 1940, and shortly thereaf- ter observed in Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches. This Sun- day also kicks off the season of the saints for our church. A season of honoring those involved in ministry and culminated in All Saints Day with a remem- brance for those saints whom have gone on in the previous year.

Oct 13th - Children's Sunday Children's Sunday is a day set aside to celebrate children as active par- ticipants in the life of the church. Children serve throughout the service. Chil-

dren's Sabbath is an ecumenically celebrated weekend committed to educating the congregation about the state of today’s children and families. Children pro- vide leadership for the future of our church.

Oct 20th - Joel 2:23-32 “The Sermon is in the Congregation” Laity Sunday focuses on the celebration of the ministry of all lay Chris- tians. On Laity Sunday, we celebrate that we are all called, laity as well as clergy,

to go and make disciples in a world so desperately in need of hope through our humble service. Jesus modeled the process for us. Therefore we all are to be ready to share the good news and make disciples. Are you ready to share? Today is also Consecration Sunday!

Oct 27th - Psalm 65 - Reformation Sunday Today we continue that movement towards our All Saints Celebration as we celebrate Reformation Sunday. Reformation Sunday is set aside to recog- nize, remember, and celebrate the Protestant Reformation. In some countries Reformation Day is an official holiday. Today, United Methodists celebrate Ref- ormation Day with a sense of moving toward unity and community. Mission Bell Nov.3 - Luke 20:27-38 All Saints Sunday Today we tackle the question. What really happens when we die? Histori- cally, the Church has confessed a belief in the "communion of the saints," which includes not only all living believers, but also all who have gone before us. When we celebrate Holy Communion, we experience the communion of saints, feast-

A Stephen Ministry Congregation ing with believers past, present and future. We remember and honor those who have passed away. Celebrated on the first Sunday in November, many congrega- tions remember those lost in the previous year as a way of honoring their lives. Frankenmuth United Methodist Church Page 2 BREAD PAN INFORMATION This month’s Bread Pan Offering will be given to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) Disaster Relief Inter- national. When a natural or human-caused disaster strikes out- side of the United States, UMCOR serves as the primary chan- nel for United Methodist assistance. In the short-term, UM- COR provides funds to our partners to distribute food, hy- giene supplies, shelter and other basic needs to ease human suffering. In the long-term, we work with local partners towards recovery and reconstruction.

Many of us watched helplessly as Hurricane Dorian decimated parts of the Bahamas leaving thousands with- out homes and causing millions of dollars in damage. At this stage, donations to UMCOR are the best way for church members to respond. Just a reminder, 100% of our donations to UMCOR projects, such as Dorian relief are spent on these projects. None is used for administration.

Bread Pan offering for the month of September was taken for our E1 after school program. At this time $572.67 has been contributed. Thank you for your generosity.

Reminder-please have all announcements for slide shows to Jim Kellom at jameskel- [email protected] by Tuesday mornings, 9 a.m. Verbal announcements will be discussed at the Board of Ministries meetings (typically held the 2nd Wednesday of each month) and will be specific to our congregations next steps toward our vision and mission. If you are leading a GROW or SERVE group we hope you will attend.

BAG LADIES PAJAMA PARTY Pajama Party hosted by the Bag Ladies. Join us on Thursday October 17 and Thursday Novem- ber 14 starting at 3pm. Consecration Sunday Is Coming, October 20, 2019 Our FUMC Finance Committee will again this year use the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving as part of our stewardship education.

Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. We ask the question, “What per- centage of my income is God calling me to give?”

To emphasize this point on Consecration Sunday, Pastor Ryan will explain the spiritual and biblical meaning of stewardship. During the service, our congregation will be asked to make their financial commitments to sup- port our church’s ministries for 2020 by completing an Estimate of Giving Card, enclosing it in an envelope.

We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards.

The Stewardship team will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship events. However, we are planning to also have the Estimate of Giving Card available on the previous two Sundays, October 6 and 13, for people who cannot attend Consecration Sunday.

A catered “Thank You” Brunch will be served to all members and guests following the 9:30 AM Consecration Sunday service. Financial results will be announced at the end of the meal. We are asking our congregation to complete a luncheon reservation card, due by the previous Sunday, October 13.

Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

Steve Arnold Stewardship Committee, STEPHEN MINISTRY Ever wonder what the Stephen Ministry logo stands for? It represents a care receiver’s journey from brokenness toward wholeness through the cross of Jesus. In this way, it illustrates “Christ caring for people through people”, which is the Stephen Ministry motto. Want to learn more? Give Judy Dale a call at 989-295-4696.

LISTEN TO FUMC SERMONS ON THE GO! Did you know there are two ways to listen to past FUMC sermons? You can go to our website and click on sermons across the top tab. There you’ll find recent sermons that you can click and listen. But, did you know that you can also listen to the sermons via the SoundCloud App on your phone or tablet? After you download the SoundCloud App, all you need to do is search for Frankenmuth United Methodist Church and you’ll find all of the sermons. Then, you can listen on the go – while on a walk or working out – or, you can play through your car speakers and listen while you drive. Or you can use your phone to play a sermon for a shut-in or someone who may not have internet access at home. If you have questions, please see Lori Et- tema.

FUMC offers assisted listening devices for worshippers who may need hearing assistance during the church service. Please see an usher or stop at the soundboard in the rear of the church if you would like to use one of these. We offer an earbud device or a TCoil loop necklace which can be used with hearing aids that have a Tcoil setting. Page 4

Fall is in the air and so too will be the leaves! As the leaf season kicks into gear, the trustee committee will be getting the word out about a couple of yard work dates. It’s an opportunity for a bit of exercise, a great time of fellowship and wonderful way to help take care of God’s beautiful earth.

Many thanks from the Trustee Committee Page 5

EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL A month ago Pastor Ryan preached a sermon on some expectations. Some requested a follow up to those final words he shared on that day. The sermon is online, but here are the closing notes: Expectations for us all (including the pastor): 1. Pray 2. Faithful in attendance (Come and keep connected when away) 3. Read the Bible and find ways to Grow in your faith 4. Share your faith with others 5. Tithe (and then trust your leaders with that) 6. Serve 7. Buy into the mission of this church (disciple makers transforming the world) I will not ask you to do something I am not willing to do myself. I can’t read your mind. I need your help. Champion your own ideas. Above all: Love God and Love each other-love all people PastorIMPORTANT Ryan INFORMATION

CLUB ORANGE UPDATE & CHANGE OF TIME With school in session, Club Orange has started as well, and we are excited to have so many students joining us! We have decided upon a new curriculum from Right Now Media called “What’s in the Bible?”. The kids enjoy a video and either a craft or project after watching the episode for the week.

October 13th will be Children’s Sunday, where we plan to give out Bibles to 1st – 3rd graders, and the children will also stay in the sanctuary to assist with the service. We will sing songs/hymns picked by the students and make a special announcement: our new Club Orange name! Please join us as we reveal a name that is more in line with our Junior/Senior high program name, was suggested by Pastor Ryan, and the kids agreed was a good choice.

We are also updating the time for (New Name) Club Orange starting October 20th (the weekend after Chil- dren’s Sunday). Children 2nd grade and under will be excused from church to attend our learning and fun time. Those in 3rd – 5th grade will be welcome to stay in the church service and instead join us after church for (New Name) Club Orange that is geared toward their age group. The after church session will be held until 11:30 am, which is the same timeline that the Junior High Rooted program runs.

Stay tuned for our new name reveal and our new times/classes! ROOTED & E1 INFORMATION E1 (our Monday thru Wednesday after school program)

This year has been quite a great start. We have 9 kids that come every day. Thank you for your continued support in this amazing program. I’m always looking for volunteers!

Rooted (our Sunday School program)

We will be working on 101 questions about the Bible and tithing to the church and how we can do that in our group. Don’t forget you are invited to join us for Glow in the Dark on October 13, 2-4 pm. Some dates to put on the calendar: November 10th, cider, donuts & crafts November 17th, making cookies for the police & fire departments

Page 8 UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Attention Ladies! Please note the following correction: At our September meeting it was announced that collection of recyclable items for the Rittmueller MS STEM program should be placed in a box in the Resource Room. That was incorrect as Marie Koch is our “feet” for getting those items to the school for us. She is often found volunteering in E1 after school program so the box for collection is on the hat rack across the hall from the E1 room. The box is labeled with “STEM Items”. With that said, here is a list of items requested in case you need the reminder:

Ping pong balls Rubber bands Duct tape Tennis balls Cardboard boxes, flattened Plastic spoons All kinds of string Paper tubes(tp or paper towel) Plastic totes Popsicle sticks Foam board Rubber bands Straws Also, should you have unused Legos or K-nex lying around your house they are needed as well.

Donations have arrived for the Fishin’ for Mission Auction! You can pamper your pet, lawn, eyes, car, teeth, tummy, and toes! Massages too! Preview on Sunday October 6th after the worship service.

Frankenmuth UMC will participate in the CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 13th, starting at 1 pm in our church parking lot. Money is raised to fight hunger, both globally and locally. Our own local food banks such as Hidden Harvest, Saginaw Rescue Mission, and the East Side Soup Kitchen will benefit. Sign up sheets for walkers and sponsors can be found in the Gathering Space. Please plan to be a walker or to sponsor one. Contact Taylor Arvilla 989-798-2356 or Sandy Yerion 989-652-6874 for more information.

SCRIP Cards If you are a Meijer or Walmart shopper, how about pre- ordering your weekly or monthly grocery cards. The church stocks a wide variety of retailers & restaurant gift cards as well. Stop by the SCRIP desk on Sunday morning and see what is available or what we can order for you. The church receives a percentage of sales that helps to support our youth programs. You can also stop in the church office Monday thru Friday and purchase cards then.

Please remember if you or your team would like to display something in the church lobby, you’ll need to fill out a Lobby Display Request form and return it to Cheryl Weirauch or Judy Scharrer. You may con- tact either of them or the church office for the form. You may also promote your event through the newsletter, weekly bulletins and the announcements on the screen prior to our worship service. OCTOBER 2019
