Sermons for October 2019 Oct 6th - Psalm 37 - World Communion Sunday (Season of Saints kickoff) Observed on the first Sunday in October, this day calls the Church to be the universal, inclusive Church. The day was first observed by Presbyterians in 1936, adopted by the Federal Council of Churches in 1940, and shortly thereaf- ter observed in Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches. This Sun- day also kicks off the season of the saints for our church. A season of honoring those involved in ministry and culminated in All Saints Day with a remem- brance for those saints whom have gone on in the previous year. Oct 13th - Children's Sunday Children's Sunday is a day set aside to celebrate children as active par- ticipants in the life of the church. Children serve throughout the service. Chil- dren's Sabbath is an ecumenically celebrated weekend committed to educating the congregation about the state of today’s children and families. Children pro- vide leadership for the future of our church. Oct 20th - Joel 2:23-32 “The Sermon is in the Congregation” Laity Sunday focuses on the celebration of the ministry of all lay Chris- tians. On Laity Sunday, we celebrate that we are all called, laity as well as clergy, to go and make disciples in a world so desperately in need of hope through our humble service. Jesus modeled the process for us. Therefore we all are to be ready to share the good news and make disciples. Are you ready to share? Today is also Consecration Sunday! Oct 27th - Psalm 65 - Reformation Sunday Today we continue that movement towards our All Saints Celebration as we celebrate Reformation Sunday. Reformation Sunday is set aside to recog- nize, remember, and celebrate the Protestant Reformation. In some countries Reformation Day is an official holiday. Today, United Methodists celebrate Ref- ormation Day with a sense of moving toward unity and community. Mission Bell Nov.3 - Luke 20:27-38 All Saints Sunday Today we tackle the question. What really happens when we die? Histori- cally, the Church has confessed a belief in the "communion of the saints," which includes not only all living believers, but also all who have gone before us. When we celebrate Holy Communion, we experience the communion of saints, feast- A Stephen Ministry Congregation ing with believers past, present and future. We remember and honor those who have passed away. Celebrated on the first Sunday in November, many congrega- tions remember those lost in the previous year as a way of honoring their lives. When a natural or human-caused disaster strikes out- side of the United States, UMCOR serves as the primary chan- nel for United Methodist assistance. In the short-term, UM- COR provides funds to our partners to distribute food, hy- giene supplies, shelter and other basic needs to ease human suffering. In the long-term, we work with local partners towards recovery and reconstruction. Many of us watched helplessly as Hurricane Dorian decimated parts of the Bahamas leaving thousands with- out homes and causing millions of dollars in damage. At this stage, donations to UMCOR are the best way for church members to respond. Just a reminder, 100% of our donations to UMCOR projects, such as Dorian relief are spent on these projects. None is used for administration. Bread Pan offering for the month of September was taken for our E1 after school program. At this time $572.67 has been contributed. Thank you for your generosity. Reminder-please have all announcements for slide shows to Jim Kellom at jameskel- [email protected] by Tuesday mornings, 9 a.m. Verbal announcements will be discussed at the Board of Ministries meetings (typically held the 2nd Wednesday of each month) and will be specific to our congregations next steps toward our vision and mission. If you are leading a GROW or SERVE group we hope you will attend. BAG LADIES PAJAMA PARTY Pajama Party hosted by the Bag Ladies. Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. We ask the question, “What per- centage of my income is God calling me to give?” To emphasize this point on Consecration Sunday, Pastor Ryan will explain the spiritual and biblical meaning of stewardship. During the service, our congregation will be asked to make their financial commitments to sup- port our church’s ministries for 2020 by completing an Estimate of Giving Card, enclosing it in an envelope. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. The Stewardship team will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship events. However, we are planning to also have the Estimate of Giving Card available on the previous two Sundays, October 6 and 13, for people who cannot attend Consecration Sunday. A catered “Thank You” Brunch will be served to all members and guests following the 9:30 AM Consecration Sunday service. Financial results will be announced at the end of the meal. We are asking our congregation to complete a luncheon reservation card, due by the previous Sunday, October 13. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events. Steve Arnold Stewardship Committee, Chairperson STEPHEN MINISTRY Ever wonder what the Stephen Ministry logo stands for? It represents a care receiver’s journey from brokenness toward wholeness through the cross of Jesus. In this way, it illustrates “Christ caring for people through people”, which is the Stephen Ministry motto. Want to learn more? Give Judy Dale a call at 989-295-4696. LISTEN TO FUMC SERMONS ON THE GO! Did you know there are two ways to listen to past FUMC sermons? You can go to our website and click on sermons across the top tab. There you’ll find recent sermons that you can click and listen. But, did you know that you can also listen to the sermons via the SoundCloud App on your phone or tablet? After you download the SoundCloud App, all you need to do is search for Frankenmuth United Methodist Church and you’ll find all of the sermons. Then, you can listen on the go – while on a walk or working out – or, you can play through your car speakers and listen while you drive. Or you can use your phone to play a sermon for a shut-in or someone who may not have internet access at home. If you have questions, please see Lori Et- tema. FUMC offers assisted listening devices for worshippers who may need hearing assistance during the church service. Please see an usher or stop at the soundboard in the rear of the church if you would like to use one of these. We offer an earbud device or a TCoil loop necklace which can be used with hearing aids that have a Tcoil setting. Page 4 VOLUNTEERS FROM CHRIST’S FLOCK Oct.
