Ao longo da última metade do séc. XVII e das primeiras décadas do séc. XVIII, enquanto o 3º Morgado de Mateus se ocupava da edificação do Palácio, com a colaboração de Nicolau Nasoni, a música barroca conhecia o seu auge por toda a Europa. Em França, Couperin escrevia ‘A Arte de Tocar Cravo’ e estabelecia uma estética e uma forma de tocar que influenciaria muitas das gerações seguintes, Forqueray compunha La Portugaise e D’Anglebert publicava uma Tábua de Ornamentos que seria referência para J. S. Bach... One of the casualties of this change was the recital recording, in which an artist or ensemble would present an interesting arrangement of musical pieces that followed a certain theme or style—much like a live concert. Although recital recordings were of course made, and are perhaps making a comeback, most recordings featured a single composer and were sold in alphabetized bins: B for Bach; V for Vivaldi.

Monophonic and polyphonic Latin song (conductus), liturgical organum and early motets will be studied sung, along with instrumental music and song accompaniment. In addition to ensemble and solo pieces (working mostly from the original manuscripts), there will be lectures, practical notational study, and daily practicum sessions in organum improvisation according to the medieval treatises. Did you have to wait before you could become his student? I started to study the harpsichord when I was twelve years old, in a small town in Brazil. Soon after that, my father bought me an LP of Mr. Leonhardt playing Bach's Goldberg Variations (his last version). When I heard this recording for the first time, studying with him became my greatest dream. In 1988, when I was fifteen, I went to study with Mr. Jacques Ogg in Amsterdam and later in The Hague. In October of 1989, I finally had the opportunity to hear Mr. Leonhardt play works by the Couperin family and Forqueray at the Concertgebouw. This concert turned my life upside down, I was speechless for three days..... in other words, it was "death-rebirth" to me. About two years after that, I finally had the courage to write to him asking for a private lesson. He very soon answered that he almost never gave any private lessons. Then I wrote him again, asking what I had to do in order to get a lesson from him..
