Tonight at our Evening with the Athletes event we honor our current high school and college Athletes of the Year, scholarship recipients, special awards and Coaches of the Year.

The 2017-18 athletic year has been a great one. If you have attended any of our Monday Press Luncheons at Harry’s, you know that our high school and college student-athletes and coaches have been celebrating great successes both on and off the field. We honor all of our teams and individuals who made it to the playoffs and beyond in addition to excelling in the classroom and community leadership. These luncheons also help Gene Deering showcase the incredible coaches which dedicate their time and energy to our youth.

This year our community was struck by tragic events with the Thomas Fire and the Montecito Mud Flow. These events helped showcase the strength of our community as many heroes emerged saving countless lives. Throughout the winter sports season the community came together at Harry’s for our Monday Luncheons where we all realized how lucky we were to have sports in our lives. Our local sports programs provided a nice escape for those who may have been affected by the tragic events.

Even though many of the winter sports seasons for our local high schools were dramatically shortened, the success our community achieved during the winter seasons was remarkable with five section championships (San Marcos Girls Water Polo,

Message Santa Barbara High Boys Soccer, Carpinteria High School Boys Soccer, San Marcos Boys Basketball, Dos Pueblos Boys Individual Wrestling).

I am honored to have served the first year of a two-year appointment as the SBART Board President. I extend a very sincere “thank you” to all of our very generous sponsors and members. I would like to recognize specifically the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors and their Charity Golf Tournament. Last year the SBART was chosen as the tournament beneficiary. Thanks to the tireless work of the SBAOR Events Committee, chaired by Drew Wakefield, the tournament was a wild success. The funds from this Golf Tournament have enabled us to establish an annual scholarship in Phil Womble’s name.

I extend a deep appreciation for all of the hard-working members of the SBART Board of Directors. The SBART has no paid staff; we are truly a “working board” with countless committee meetings, luncheons and long hours spent, coupled with the financial generosity of our sponsors and members, to keep the SBART mission moving forward. Last, but not least, a very hearty “thank you” to our local sports media for covering our luncheons, working together to honor our student-athletes with weekly and end- of-year awards and for publically sharing all of the great sports stories from our high schools and colleges each and every day.

President’s Growing up, I struggled with learning disabilities and I was able to achieve confidence and friendship through sports. Having sports to provide inspiration and motivation to attend college was vital in my life. When I first learned of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table and their mission to help recognize and celebrate achievements on the field of play and in the classroom, I wanted to be involved.

Thank you to all of you in attendance tonight for showing your support for our local student-athletes, coaches, community leaders, sports media and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.

2018 SBART

Almost five decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area.

The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Founders Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, Founders and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members.

The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College onJune 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million for local athletics.

Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Quarterback Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds.

Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend.

It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka.

The mission of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table is to recognize and support athletic participation as an important means of fostering discipline, teamwork, self-respect, personal responsibility, and camaraderie.

The SBART provides a public forum for area athletic coaches and athletes; grants financial support to Mission organizations, teams, and individuals to further their participation in sports; and publicly honors athletic Statement performance, scholastic achievement and exemplary ethical behavior. 2018 The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table honors the life of long-time Board Member

Chris Casebeer: 1946-2017

Chris Casebeer was a man who was big, bold, and full of love. Breaking social norms everywhere he went, Chris could not pass up the chance to strike up a conversation and connect with people. He cultivated friendships with people near and far. He never held back sharing a big hug, genuine smile, or an invitation to visit his home. Chris lived with a sense of sharing abundance and possibility that is rare in this world; and all of us who knew and loved him are so much the better for it.

A long-time SBART Board Member and Past-President, Chris was an active force for SBART membership, events and awards. The SBART Special Olympics Athlete of the Month Award has been named in honor of Chris. At UCSB, Chris was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity and played on the indoor Gaucho

Memorium volleyball team, where he forged many enduring friendships. He was a member of the 1969 National Collegiate Champion Team. Chris was an avid fan and supporter of the Gauchos men’s and women’s Volleyball and Basketball teams. A successful local Realtor, Chris also served on the boards of the Special Olympics of Santa Barbara and the UCSB Athletic Director’s Advisory Committee.

In After his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in early 2015, Chris’ strength and indomitable spirit helped him to seek out the best treatment possible, and he enjoyed 2 1/2 more years of travel and avid support of his son Jeremy’s professional beach volleyball career and treasured time with family. On Sept. 2, 2017, Chris passed away sitting on his front porch, waiting to meet friends for coffee, overlooking his beloved tropical garden in Santa Barbara. 2017-18 Athletic Highlights by Barry Punzal, Editor, Noozhawk Sports 2018

It was a sports year unlike any other in the Santa Barbara area. In December, the normally pristine air was choked with ash and smoke from the Thomas Fire. It was surreal to watch the turbulent gusts of wind send columns of flame across the face of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Bishop Diego’s football team prepared for its CIF Southern California Regional and State Championship games inside the gym and the players were forced to wear particulate filtering masks. The dangerous air quality relocated home games for the Regionals and the State Final from Santa Barbara to Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.

These challenges didn’t stop a committed group of Cardinals, however. They Athletic performed at an incredibly high level throughout the postseason, winning their first CIF- SS football title and then becoming the first team from Santa Barbara County to win Regional and State football championships. Meanwhile, the conditions forced our winter sports teams to cancel practices and home games. The Thomas Fire rained soot on the community, clogging pools and hindering water polo teams from their workouts and drills. Then came the devastating mudslides and flooding. Lives were lost, homes destroyed, and the landscape irrevocably altered. In the athletic world, more games were cancelled as schools were closed and teams were unable to travel because sections of the 101 freeway were underwater or engulfed in mud. In the face of tremendous loss and grief, the community came together, showed great resiliency, and supported those residents in need. Doubtlessly inspired by the heroics on display by community members and first responders alike, the local sports teams exhibited their own determination and spirit. In the winter season, an unprecedented seven prep teams advanced to CIF Southern Section finals, including crosstown rivals Dos Pueblos and San Marcos in Division 1 girls water polo. In collegiate athletics, UCSB men’s basketball made an amazing turnaround under first-year coach Joe Pasternack. The Gauchos improved from just 6 wins last year to 23. The 17-win turnaround was the biggest in the nation this year. At Westmont, the women’s basketball team won the GSAC regular season and tournament championships, going on to reach the NAIA National Championship game. The Westmont men’s team advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the fourth straight year, the longest streak in team history. Four prep teams were crowned CIF champions: San Marcos water polo, San Marcos boys basketball, Santa Barbara High boys soccer, and Carpinteria boys soccer. The Carpinteria team soccer also won a state regional title, becoming the first team from Santa Barbara County to earn this coveted CIF Double. Will Yamasaki of Dos Pueblos won a CIF individual wrestling title. Dos Pueblos wrestling, Santa Barbara girls water polo and Dos Pueblos girls water polo finished as CIF runners-up. These successes came after the Bishop Diego and Dos Pueblos football teams advanced to the section finals in their respective divisions and the DP boys water polo team reached the section finals in the fall season. Bishop Diego utterly demolished Golden Valley 37-6 for the Division 6 title, while Dos Pueblos came inches short of a winning touchdown on the last play of the Division 10 final and lost a 26-21 heartbreaker at Quartz Hill. 2017-18 Athletic Highlights ~ cont. 2018 by Barry Punzal, Editor, Noozhawk Sports

Bishop would go on to rout Quartz Hill in the Regionals, 41-7, and crush Shasta of Redding, 41-6, in the State Championship Game. Running back John Harris and linebacker Ashton Borgeson of the Cardinals were named CIF-SS Players of the Year and All State. At Dos Pueblos, linebacker Will Yamasaki was the CIF Division 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and offensive lineman Erick Nisich earned All-CIF and All-State honors. Dos Pueblos fell just short in the Division 3 boys water polo final, 9-7. San Marcos and Dos Pueblos squared off in an epic showdown in the Division 1 girls water polo final before a huge crowd at the Elings Aquatic Center on the DP campus. San Marcos prevailed 4-3 to win its first title in program history. The event took place just a few weeks after the devastating mudslides. Bob Wigod, the commissioner of the CIF Southern Section, was overwhelmed by the scene at the pool and the sense of celebration for all who were there, calling the night “unforgettable.” It was an exceptional season for the San Marcos boys basketball team. Led by a cohesive group of seniors, the Royals displayed tremendous team play night after night, winning 27 games and capturing the school’s first CIF title. Jackson Stormo, the team’s 6-foot-9 center was named the CIF-SS 2A Division Player of the Year and was selected to the All-State team. On the soccer pitch, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria could not be stopped in the playoffs. Santa Barbara got tremendous goalkeeper play from senior Ben Roach to beat Loyola in double overtime in the semifinals and then L.A. Cathedral in a penalty- kick shootout in the Division 1 championship game. The UCSB-bound Roach was named the Division 1 Player of the Year. After having several regular-season games postponed by the fire and floods, Carpinteria got on a roll in the playoffs and won the Division 6 section championship, following up with its first State Division 5 Regional title. Playmaking midfielder Gabe Barajas was named Division 6 Player of the Year. Westmont and Santa Barbara City College both enjoyed banner fall seasons. At Westmont, the women’s volleyball team won 35 matches, captured the GSAC title for the second straight year, won the inaugural conference tournament, and advanced to the NAIA National quarterfinals. Libby Dahlberg was named GSAC Player of the Year. The women’s soccer team, led by All-American Jackie Lopez from Santa Barbara, reached the NAIA quarterfinals. The Warrior men’s soccer team also rose up and won the GSAC Tournament title. Three SBCC women’s teams went 1-2-3 in state finals. The water polo team won the school’s first state championship, the soccer team posted a school-record 21-1-1 mark and finished runner-up in the state, and the golf team placed third in the state

Athletic tournament. The year of success has spread into the spring season, with several high school and college teams and individuals showing strong indications that they’ll be making long runs in postseason competition. Whatever happens, the year is definitely one to remember. IntroducingIntroducing ourour FallFall SportSport AthletesAthletes ofof thethe Year 2018

RYAN CHILDRESS Ryan Childress has been an athlete in Special Olympics since 2010 when he competed in the Track & Field School Games. Since then, Ryan has become an amazing competitor and teammate in Soccer, Basketball, and Floor Hockey. Ryan is a natural athlete and fierce competitor on the soccer field, basketball court and hockey rink, who has earned himself the nickname “The Scoring Machine“ by his coaches and peers for his ability to score goals in rapid succession. Ryan brings wonderful enthusiasm and a sense of joy to each practice. He loves playing sports, and his enjoyment is infectious and raises the spirits of everyone around him. This is what Brian Medel, Ryan’s soccer coach, had to say about him, “Ryan is admired for his sportsmanship and coach-ability and is often seen on the field helping lift up opposing players, supporting teammates who are frustrated or hurt, and is as enthusiastic off the bench as he is in a starting role. He is responsible and independent on away trips, and he is someone coaches can depend on and point to as a role model for others. He is a joy to coach and I look forward to working with him again soon.” Ryan is currently a student at Santa Barbara City College and a graduate of San

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was initiated in September 1986 after the Round Table’s Board of Directors recognized the need to honor those students who are not only successful athletes, but who also maintain strong academic and extra-curricular credentials. Qualifications for nomination include participation in varsity athletics at the high school level and in designated athletic programs at the college level. Academic qualifications include outstanding grade point averages, usually greater than 3.5, in conjunction with other scholarly activities such as honor societies, scientific societies, extra-curricular activities and outstanding aptitude test scores for high school. Students have been selected by principals, senior counselors, athletic directors and coaches at the various high schools and colleges in the Santa Barbara area, in association with the Athletic Round Table. The Round Table feels that the significance of this award goes beyond recognizing individual students who have outstanding academic and athletic records. It is also a reminder to the community that it is possible for a student to participate in athletics and still maintain outstanding academic achievement. We are proud to present this year’s recipients.

Russ Hargreaves was a dedicated member of the Santa Barbara Recreation Department. He spent a lifetime creating opportunities for others to enjoy the benefits of recreational activities. He loved jogging and was committed to total body fitness. He knew that a healthy mind and body were the first steps to a happy and productive life. This award is given to a person recognized by the Parks & Recreation Department as a leader in maintaining quality sports programs R.F. MacFarland Memorial Award SANTA BARBARA TENNIS PATRONS The Santa Barbara Tennis Patrons organization, now in its 48th year of existence, has remained as solid as the rock it was founded upon. Jerry Beaver, the group’s founding director, and several other tennis players were surveying the construction of the Santa Barbara Tennis Club when the idea for a junior tennis organization was raised nearly a half-century ago. “There’s a rock up there in front of courts 3, 4 and 5, and we were standing there when somebody said, ‘You know, we’ve got to get a junior tennis program going,’” Beaver recalled. “Somebody said, ‘Well, Beaver, you’ve got three little kids – why don’t you take it on?’” Little did he know that the organization that he’d help start in April of 1971 would now be running numerous junior as well as adult tournaments throughout the year, including one for Special Olympians. The Patrons group also holds a Summer Mentorship Camp for disadvantaged youth as well as a Schools Program that has exposed tennis to more than 6,500 youngsters, while also offering scholarships funded by the Bryan Brothers Foundation. The Patrons also spearheaded the fundraising to resurrect the men’s tennis program at Santa Barbara City College. The organization’s stated mission is “advancing life skills and providing education to the youth of Santa Barbara through participation in an activity that is universally heralded as a ‘sport for a lifetime.’” Elizabeth Winterhalter has served as the Patrons’ president for the last decade. John Sanford is vice- president, Nancy Wheeler is secretary, and CathyAnn Simon serves as the organization’s executive director. The Patrons’ board of directors include John Gerngross, Jerry Hatchett, Neil Levinson, Don Logan, Larry Mousouris, John Sanford, and Greg Tebbe.

R.F. MacFarland was one of the founders of Semana Nautica in 1936. This award is given annually to the person or organization who best exemplifies community leadership in the area of sports and athletics. It is sponsored by The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department, local media and the Semana Nautica Association. Open Athlete of the Year 2018 JEFF FARRELL Jeff Farrell’s long and illustrious swimming career spans decades, much longer than most athletes compete in their given sport, and his accomplishments continue to re-write the record books. Many may think his qualifying for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy despite undergoing an appendectomy just six days before the trials began would be his crowning achievement, especially since his two relays earned gold medals and set world records. However, if you ask him directly, his most important accomplishment was being the first swimmer to be inducted into both the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame. These honors are certainly a testament to his longevity at the top of the sport and an indication of his determination and tenacity. Last year, Jeff competed in the 80-84 age group at the short course US Swimming Masters National Championship in Riverside, CA and won the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, and 100 yard individual medley, setting a national record in the 50 yard freestyle at 28.68 seconds. Incredibly, this time is only a mere 6.18 seconds slower than his world class pace of 22.50 seconds he swam almost 60 years ago. In addition to setting this national record for short course yards in 2017, Jeff also set the national record for the long course 50 meter freestyle at 32.18 seconds and the world record for the short course 50 meter freestyle at 31.25 seconds.

Awards At a time when most athletes would stop competing, relax, and look back over their career and accomplishments, Jeff is still as driven as ever to stand atop the award podium and dominate the record books. If his past is any indication, he will continue to amaze, impress, and likely set a new record every time he steps up to the starting blocks.

SBART Master Athlete Award RUSTY SNOW 2018 Rusty Snow has only been in the Santa Barbara area for about a decade and a half, but his impact to the running and sports community has

been immeasurable. He not only sets an example SBART as a pacesetter and overall winner in most local races he enters, but he’s also grown the sport as a coach and founder of Santa Barbara Running and Racing and as an entrepreneur helping organize and host racing events. His accomplishments as a Master Athlete only serve to enhance his profile and legend.

Rusty competed in the USA Track and Field Masters Cross Country National Championship and the 8K Master’s Championship between 2011 and 2015, racking

up podium finishes as both an individual competitor as well as part of a team. During

Special Awards Special Special Awards Special that short time period, he took six top-4 finishes as an individual in his age group and helped the team earn three straight championships.

Perhaps even more impressive is his streak of top finishes at the Elliptical Cycling World Championships, a grueling timed ride up Palomar Mountain in northern San Diego County. With an average grade of almost 7%, the course climbs over 4200 feet of elevation in just 11.69 miles. In 2012, Rusty’s first year competing in the event, he rode away with first place and the ElliptiGO Founders’ Cup, breaking the course record by over 5 minutes. Since that initial race, he’s claimed victory for six straight years, averaging a blistering pace of 1:11:04 and setting a course record of 1:09:55 in 2014.

His most prized accomplishments include qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the marathon, finding success in starting businesses, and attaining All American status while competing in college. He is also extremely proud of his two boys, Miles and Blaise, and the roots that his family has put down in Santa Barbara. He finds joy in coaching runners that are passionate about the sport and love to test their limits, and in that regard, he certainly sets a great example to follow.
