Tonight is the culminating event to our 2009-10 school year where we are proud to honor the outstanding achievements of our President’s local athletes. In light of our mission to recognize and support athletic participation, this year we hosted over 1,000 SBART Board Member Dale Rhine, UCSB Basketball Alumna Christa athletes and coaches Gannon, SBART President Catharine Manset Morreale and former at our Monday Press UCSB Women’s Basketball Coach Mark French at the Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon. Luncheons, 400 athletes at our Women and Girls In Sports Luncheon, raised thousands of dollars for our local athletic departments and provided much needed funding to such well deserved organizations as the UCSB Junior Wheelchair Camp, the Santa Barbara Youth Football League and the Club West Track Club. In addition, we honored dozens of outstanding athletes for their ethics, sportsmanship, academics and volunteer endeavors. We accomplished all of this through the financial support of hundreds of local community members and sponsors and through the hard work of an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Highlights of the year include Karch Kiraly’s appearance at our Fall Classic event. The former Santa Barbara High School volleyball superstar spoke to a packed house of Message SBART members and supporters as well as the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos High School varsity girls’ volleyball teams. The success of Fall Classic was followed in February by the Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon featuring Christa Gannon, a former UCSB basketball star that went on to graduate top of her class from Stanford law school before founding Fresh Lifelines for Youth, a non-profit that works with disadvantaged youth in the San Jose area. Her memorable “TWILIGHT” speech prompted a spontaneous standing ovation from the 400+ young athletes in attendance. Finally, former Westmont and Lakers’ Coach Randy Pfund was the headline speaker for our March Madness event. He kept the audience of rapt SBART benefactors captivated with his “inside sports” stories and Final Four picks! Our Board as well as our volunteers, members and sponsors put their time, energy and funding into this organization because we believe in the importance of sports for the youth of our community. We believe that along with lessons learned from engaging in competition and camaraderie, sports teach lifelong skills including discipline, teamwork, goal-setting, pursuit of excellence and resilience in the face of hardship. We know that sports are associated with lower high school dropout rates, higher levels of college attendance, higher test grades and the overall development of achievement- oriented behaviors. If you are currently an SBART sponsor or member, we appreciate and thank you for your ongoing support. If you are not a member, we encourage you to join with us to uphold our 43-year-old mission to recognize and support our youth! 3 It’s been an exciting year for Santa Barbara athletics! In the 2010 Fall, the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos girls’ high school volleyball teams clashed in the semi-finals of CIF and Dos Pueblos went on to win the CIF Championship match while the spring brought a CIF Championship to the Dos Pueblos girls water polo team as well as the sensational boys’ soccer CIF Championship match-up between Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos. Over 8,000 fans watched the Santa Barbara boys’ team edge out Dos Pueblos at UCSB’s Harder Stadium. Meanwhile, Bishop High’s girls’ basketball team won 18 games and advanced to the CIF second round while their boys’ golf team was in contention to win a league championship. Laguna Blanca’s girls’ volleyball team also soared, scoring their eighth consecutive championship in the Condor League and reaching CIF finals before being defeated. In the academic and sportsmanship arena, San Marcos hit a home run coming in on top of the CIF Southern Section Academic Awards where they received the most top-five finishes out of 22 sports. Girls’ swimming, boys’ volleyball and wrestling placed first for the highest cumulative, non-weighted GPAs in their respective sports. The Carpinteria High Warriors achieved accolades in the sportsmanship department, earning the CIF Sportsmanship Award for the Frontier League, while their girls’ golf team won the CIF Academic Team Championship with an un-weighted team GPA of 3.915. Success In the college arena, SBCC’s women’s volleyball had one of the best seasons in school history with Maria Mayer (San Marcos) earning All-State honors. Their men’s soccer team won its second-straight WSC title under John Sisterson, and women’s basketball was second in the WSC with Coach Sandrine Krul named WSC North coach of the year. UCSB’s athletic success was highlighted by NCAA appearances by men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball as well as individual appearances by cross country and track and field. They also laid claim to the most scholar-athletes in the Big West Conference. Finally, Westmont men’s cross country won the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship, and women’s basketball reached the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship game. Congratulations to all of our college and high school athletes! We are proud to support you! Athletic 4 2010 SBART ver four decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared O Founders a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area. The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members. The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College on June 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million. Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Quarterback Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds. Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend. It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka. 5 2010 Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2010 Fame Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Hotel May 24, 2010 Santa Barbara, Calif. Two thousand students cry ’End the war now’ Speaker Bonpane asserts Moratorium only beginning (Editor’s note: Pictures o f rally are on page 2). “ Ya basta! Stop the war or we’ll stop the United States.” These emphatic words o f Blaise Bonpane and Corky Gonzalez echoed the sentiments o f the first Vietnam Moratorium by condemning the injustice and imperialism which created Vietnam. Both Bonpane, a missionary who worked with the guerrilla forces in Guatemala, and Gonzalez, a militant chicano leader, have been integrally involved in Third World struggles. In the moratorium rally held yesterday noon, both emphasized the inability o f the U.S. to contain countries and peoples struggling for liberation. “ The violence which America has perpetrated on her own minorities and on other nations,” said Gonzalez, “ must come to a stop.” “ There will be more Vietnams,” he added, “ until it does.” Before an audience o f about 2,000 students, the speakers made a plea for rationality and humanitarianism during the most “ irrational and barbarous” period o f American history. “ I f you can’t express your rational stand through a democratic vote,” said Bonpane, “ then you have to find another way to make yourself be heard.” " A Day of Protest to End the War and bring understanding back to mankind." “ I f you have nothing to say about a selective slavery system Photo by Thom MacDonald which is forcing you to napalm people,” he continued, ‘‘then you napalm the draft boards o f that system. “ And if you have nothing to say about the declaration o f war in a supposed democracy, then you shut that democracy down,” he stated.
