Tonight is the culminating event to our 2009-10 school year where we are proud to honor the outstanding

achievements of our President’s local athletes. In light of our mission to recognize and support athletic participation, this year we hosted over 1,000 SBART Board Member Dale Rhine, UCSB Alumna Christa athletes and coaches Gannon, SBART President Catharine Manset Morreale and former at our Monday Press UCSB Women’s Basketball Coach Mark French at the Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon. Luncheons, 400 athletes at our Women and Girls In Sports Luncheon, raised thousands of dollars for our local athletic departments and provided much needed funding to such well deserved organizations as the UCSB Junior Wheelchair Camp, the Santa Barbara Youth Football League and the Club West Track Club. In addition, we honored dozens of outstanding athletes for their ethics, sportsmanship, academics and volunteer endeavors. We accomplished all of this through the financial support of hundreds of local community members and sponsors and through the hard work of an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Highlights of the year include Karch Kiraly’s appearance at our Fall Classic event. The

former Santa Barbara High School superstar spoke to a packed house of Message SBART members and supporters as well as the Santa Barbara and varsity girls’ volleyball teams. The success of Fall Classic was followed in February by the Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon featuring Christa Gannon, a former UCSB basketball star that went on to graduate top of her class from Stanford law school before founding Fresh Lifelines for Youth, a non-profit that works with disadvantaged youth in the San Jose area. Her memorable “TWILIGHT” speech prompted a spontaneous standing ovation from the 400+ young athletes in attendance. Finally, former Westmont and Lakers’ Coach Randy Pfund was the headline speaker for our March Madness event. He kept the audience of rapt SBART benefactors captivated with his “inside sports” stories and Final Four picks! Our Board as well as our volunteers, members and sponsors put their time, energy and funding into this organization because we believe in the importance of sports for the youth of our community. We believe that along with lessons learned from engaging in competition and camaraderie, sports teach lifelong skills including discipline, teamwork, goal-setting, pursuit of excellence and resilience in the face of hardship. We know that sports are associated with lower high school dropout rates, higher levels of college attendance, higher test grades and the overall development of achievement- oriented behaviors. If you are currently an SBART sponsor or member, we appreciate and thank you for your ongoing support. If you are not a member, we encourage you to join with us to uphold our 43-year-old mission to recognize and support our youth! 3 It’s been an exciting year for Santa Barbara athletics! In the 2010 Fall, the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos girls’ high school volleyball teams clashed in the semi-finals of CIF and Dos Pueblos went on to win the CIF Championship match while the spring brought a CIF Championship to the Dos Pueblos girls team as well as the sensational boys’ soccer CIF Championship match-up between Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos. Over 8,000 fans watched the Santa Barbara boys’ team edge out Dos Pueblos at UCSB’s Harder Stadium. Meanwhile, Bishop High’s girls’ basketball team won 18 games and advanced to the CIF second round while their boys’ team was in contention to win a league championship. Laguna Blanca’s girls’ volleyball team also soared, scoring their eighth consecutive championship in the Condor League and reaching CIF finals before being defeated. In the academic and sportsmanship arena, San Marcos hit a home run coming in on top of the CIF Southern Section Academic Awards where they received the most top-five finishes out of 22 sports. Girls’ , boys’ volleyball and wrestling placed first for the highest cumulative, non-weighted GPAs in their respective sports. The Carpinteria High Warriors achieved accolades in the sportsmanship department, earning the CIF Sportsmanship Award for the Frontier League, while their girls’ golf team won the CIF Academic Team Championship with an un-weighted team GPA of 3.915.

Success In the college arena, SBCC’s women’s volleyball had one of the best seasons in school history with Maria Mayer (San Marcos) earning All-State honors. Their men’s soccer team won its second-straight WSC title under John Sisterson, and women’s basketball was second in the WSC with Coach Sandrine Krul named WSC North coach of the year. UCSB’s athletic success was highlighted by NCAA appearances by men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball as well as individual appearances by cross country and track and field. They also laid claim to the most scholar-athletes in the Big West Conference. Finally, Westmont men’s cross country won the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship, and women’s basketball reached the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship game. Congratulations to all of our college and high school athletes! We are proud to support you!

2010 SBART

ver four decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared

O Founders a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area. The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members. The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College on June 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million. Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Quarterback Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds. Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend. It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka.

21 College Coach of the Year 2010 Bob Williams College Coach of the Year UCSB Men’s Basketball Past Recipients Plenty of local television sets were locked on CBS on the night of March 19th, as UCSB’s men’s basketball team went up against second-seeded powerhouse 1969 Albert Revis SBCC 1969 Jim Klein WEST Ohio State in the first round of March Madness. 1969 Ted Fish UCSB The man who led the Gauchos there was Bob Williams, who in 1998 inherited 1970 Bob Dinaberg SBCC a UCSB program that hadn’t had a winning season for five years. The team 1970 Tom Byron WEST 1971 Ed DeLacy SBCC lost its first eight games that season, but he righted the ship as the Gauchos 1971 Ralph Barkey UCSB won 15 of their final 20 contests. Under Williams, the Gauchos have gone 1972 Bob Dinaberg SBCC 199-156 with four postseason appearances and 10 winning seasons. 1972 Ron Mulder WEST 1972 Dave Gorrie UCSB This year’s young team finished 20-10, winning the Big West regular-season 1973 Les Stevens SBCC title as well as the Big West Tournament. 1973 Russ Carr WEST 1973 Ralph Barkey UCSB Led by a stellar sophomore class which Williams recruited, the Gauchos went 12-4 in the Big West this 1974 Ed DeLacy SBCC season. Sophomore Orlando Johnson was named Big West Player of the Year, and Williams earned his 1974 Rudy Suwara UCSB third award as the conference’s Coach of the Year. 1975 Gus Mee UCSB 1976 Bob Dinaberg SBCC After the loss to the mighty Buckeyes, Williams was asked what the ensuing offseason would bring for the 1977 Ed DeLacy SBCC Gauchos, who will return all but two players from this year’s squad. 1978 Chet Kammerer WEST “There’s a lot to work with, and a lot to work on. The number one thing they have to do is really be 1979 Gregg Wilson UCSB 1980 Pete Snyder UCSB humble, now that they’ve had some success. Then come back (next season) and try to get better,” he said. 1981 Frank Carbajal SBCC Williams is the proud father of daughter Kori. 1982 Bobbie Bonace UCSB 1983 Al Ferrer UCSB 1984 Chet Kammerer WEST 1984 Frank Carbajal SBCC 1985 Gregg Wilson UCSB 1986 Al Ferrer UCSB 1986 Jean Paul Verhees WEST 1987 Mircea Badulescu UCSB 1988 Jerry Pimm UCSB 1989 Ken Preston UCSB 1990 Chet Kammerer WEST 1991 Chet Kammerer WEST 1992 Mark French UCSB 1993 Gregg Wilson UCSB 1994 Chris Russell UCSB 1995 Mike Giuliano WEST 1996 Cathy Sanford SBCC 1997 Tim Vom Steeg SBCC 1998 Kathy Gregory UCSB 1999 John Moore WEST 2000 Mike Giuliano WEST 2001 Gregg Wilson UCSB 2002 Bob Williams UCSB 2003 Mike Giuliano WEST 2004 Mark French UCSB 2005 Tim Vom Steeg UCSB 2006 Gregg Wilson UCSB 2007 Tim Vom Steeg UCSB 2008 Greg Wilson UCSB 2009 Dave Wolf WEST

22 High School Coach of the Year Todd Heil 2010 SBHS Boys’ Soccer High School Coach of the Year It was a special year for boys soccer in our community, with the apex being Past Recipients both Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos meeting for the CIF Championship 1968 Sam Cathcart SBHS in front of an estimated 8,000 fans at UCSB’s Harder Stadium. Santa Barbara 1969 Jim Bashore CARP won that game, capping off a historic season that won’t be forgotten any time 1970 Jack Triguiero SBHS 1971 Don Volpi DPHS soon. 1972 Maury Halleck SMHS The Dons, counting their 3-0 win in the championship game, won four 1973 Dick Mires DPHS tournaments during the season, captured the Channel League title and 1974 Mike Warren CARP 1975 Mike Hart DPHS finished second in the CIF Division 2 Regional tournament. They had 32- 1975 Manuel Garcia SBHS game unbeaten streak and finished with an eye-popping 31-1-1 record. 1976 Lou Panizzon CARP What’s curious, however, is that there was no particular superstar on this 1976 Linda Dawson BDHS 1977 Linda Dawson BDH year’s Dons squad. Rather, it was an on-field chemistry that made them nearly unbeatable. That team 1978 Tom Shoji SMHS chemistry was fostered by Heil. 1979 Maury Halleck SMHS Heil, a Yorba Linda native, began coaching at SBHS under Rudy Ybarra as a UCSB undegrad in 1995. In 1980 Lou Panizzon CARP 1981 Mike Moropoulos SBHS 1999, he took over the varsity program and has since amassed 236 wins, seven Channel League titles and 1982 Manuel Garcia SBHS two CIF crowns (2001 and 2010). 1983 Gordon McClenathen DPHS Since 2000, Heil has also served as the head coach of the UCSB women’s club soccer team. In his tenure, 1984 Cecilia Gutierrez BDHS 1985 Mike Hart DPHS the women’s club team has reached the National Collegiate Club Championship Final Four on five 1986 Jack Triguiero SBHS occasions and the Finals three times. On top of that, he is an assistant for the UCSB varsity women’s team. 1987 Lou Panizzon CARP 1988 Lou Panizzon CARP He teaches Government at SBHS and has been married to wife Kachina for three years. Luckily for the 1989 Scott O’Leary DPHS Dons, he doesn’t plan on leaving the sidelines any time soon. 1990 Lito Garcia SBHS “Looking back at the beginning, I never could have imagined the success we’ve had over the past few 1991 Jim Ranta DPHS 1992 Ben Hallock CARP years. Our program’s identity is based on the quality of soccer, and I look forward to continuing with that 1993 Norris Fletcher BDHS tradition of success,” he said. 1993 Satini Puailoa SMHS 1994 Joel Garbarino SMHS 1995 Scott Brennand SMHS High School Coach of the Year 1996 Jack Trigueiro SBHS 1997 Jeff Hesselmeyer DPHS 1998 Abe Jahadhmy SMHS Danelle Little 1999 Mark Walsh SBHS 2000 Jon Lee SMHS DPHS Girls’ Waterpolo 2001 Nan Seed Verkaik SBHS Danelle Little has coached her alma mater to a remarkable three consecutive 2002 Fred Warrecker SBHS CIF Championships, and this past year had what most considered the No. 2003 Coley Candaele CARP 1 girls water polo team in the country. The Chargers proved to be truly 2004 Mark Walsh SBHS 2005 Chris Parrish DPHS invincible, going 31-0 en route to the championship. 2006 Dwayne Hauschild DPHS That 31st win, however, didn’t come easy. DP trailed second-ranked Newport 2007 Jason Donnelly LBHS Harbor 7-2 late in the second quarter but went on to score six unanswered 2008 Tom Crawford BDHS 2009 John Gannon SBHS goals and grab a dramatic 8-7 win. What many may not know about coaching aquatics at such a high level is that it requires grueling hours. During the season, Little is at the pool at 5:15 a.m. to set up for morning practices. After that it’s school, where Little teaches math and psychology to her fellow Chargers (she’s a 1996 graduate). It’s back to the pool after that, and on days when there is a road game the team might not be back until late in the evening. Little, who played at DP before girls water polo was a recognized CIF sport, played for two years at UCSB before returning to the high school to coach under SBART Hall-of-Famer Jim Ranta in 1999. Back then and up until the last few years, Santa Barbara High was the preeminent program. Little credits the power- shift to the Chargers’ new Elings Aquatic Center, which was opened in 2007. She also thinks that many of the community’s talented club players were attracted to DP because of the magnetism of star players such as two-time reigning CIF MVP Kiley Neushul. “Our new pool was huge, and also the way the club program has built up in recent years,” said the back- to-back CIF Coach of the Year. Little, who married fellow DP graduate Danny Muhr in March, looks forward to starting a family soon and realizing her dream of being a mom. 23 Sportsperson of the Month 2010 Generously Sponsored by Wade and Roxanne Nomura and Family riteria for selection of the person or organization honored in this category include the characteristics of good sportsmanship and demonstrated leadership abilities Cin the area of sports or athletics. SBART 24 Scholar Athletes of the Year Generously Sponsored by The Human Performance Center 2010 he Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was

Tinitiated in September 1986 after the Round Table’s Board of Directors recognized SBART the need to honor those students who are not only successful athletes, but who also maintain strong academic and extra-curricular credentials. Qualifications for nomination include participation in varsity athletics at the high school level and in designated athletic programs at the college level. Academic qualifications include outstanding grade point averages, usually greater than 3.5, in conjunction with other scholarly activities such as honor societies, scientific societies, extra-curricular activities and outstanding aptitude test scores for high school. Students have been selected by principals, senior counselors, athletic directors and coaches at the various high schools and colleges in the Santa Barbara area, in association with the Athletic Round Table.

The Round Table feels that the significance of this award goes beyond recognizing SpecialAwards individual students who have outstanding academic and athletic records. It is also a reminder to the community that it is possible for a student to participate in athletics and still maintain outstanding academic achievement. We are proud to present this year’s recipients. 2009-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards
