Golden Eagles Volleyball 2 BILL LAWLER HEAD COA ch Bill Lawler, the program’s most successful coach, returns for his 13th season as the head coach of Cal State L.A.’s volleyball team. Lawler has guided the Golden Eagles to a 253- 104 record in his first 12 years with the program, including an NCAA Division II Pacific Region championship and national Final Four finish in 2005. The Golden Eagles have qualified for the NCAA playoffs in nine of Lawler’s 12 years as the head coach and captured three California Collegiate Athletic Association titles. Lawler was named the 2005 Pacific Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association and he has also been named the CCAA Coach of the Year twice in voting done by the conference coaches. Lawler guided the Golden Eagles to a 17-10 overall record in 2007 and to their fourth straight NCAA Division II playoff Bill Lawler appearance. Cal State L.A. advanced to the Pacific Region semifinals for the third straight year after an epic 28-30, 30-26, Head Coach 30-22, 32-34, 19-17 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the first round. Lawler became the Golden Eagles’ all-time career win leader on Sept. 23, 2001 when the Two-time conference Golden Eagles beat Grand Canyon in five games in Phoenix, Ariz., for his 121st win. During his 12 years as the head coach, his players have earned 48 All-CCAA awards, 14 All-Pacific Region awards, six All-America awards and three CCAA Player of the Year awards. Lawler came to Cal State L.A. in 1996 after serving as the top assistant coach for the men’s volleyball program at Pepperdine and legendary coach Marv Dunphy. Lawler’s primary responsibilities included recruiting, game and practice preparation and scouting. Pepperdine finished ranked among the nation’s top-10 teams in each of Lawler’s three seasons with the program. Lawler began his college coaching career at Santa Monica College in 1988, where he resurrected the Corsairs’ men’s volleyball program after a five-year hiatus. His teams finished with winning records four times, including an 18-6 mark in 1993. That year, Santa Monica finished second in the California State Junior College Championships and Lawler was named the Western State Conference Coach of the Year. Internationally, Lawler was an assistant coach at the 1994 and 1995 U.S. Olympic Festivals, earning one gold (1994) and one bronze (1995) medal. During the summer of 1999, he served as an assistant for the U.S. Junior National Team that competed at the World Championships in Canada and finished eighth in the world. Lawler played in college at Santa Barbara City College and San Diego State. He earned first-team All-Conference honors at Santa Barbara and was a two-time letterwinner at San Diego State. The Chatsworth native is also a former L.A. City Player of the Year, earning the honor as a senior at Chatsworth High School after leading the Chancellors to a city championship. Lawler earned his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State in 1988. He and his wife, Marcella, have one son, William. 3 www.csulaathletics.com RANDI SMART ASSISTANT COA ch A talented assistant coach with 10 years worth of experience at Southern California universities that includes a national championship, Randi Smart joins the Cal State L.A. staff. Smart previously coached at Cal Poly Pomona and the University of La Verne. Smart coached at Cal Poly Pomona for four seasons and helped the Broncos to a 73-40 overall record. The Broncos enjoyed the best year in the program’s history in 2005, going 24-3 overall and sharing the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with Cal State L.A. The Broncos were 21-7 and reached the NCAA playoffs last season. Smart earned valuable championship experience after serving as an assistant coach at La Verne for six seasons. The highlight of her tenure came in 2001 when the Leopards won their third- ever national championships. As an added bonus, she got to coach her younger sister, Ryan Winn, who was an All-American setter for the Leopards and was the 2001 National Player of the Year. She came to La Verne after playing overseas in Austria for one year.
