Sean Polite interview with Ralph Titterton on the legacy of composer, Barry Gray. 1961, Kent (United Kingdom): A 6 year boy is sitting about his home in Capel-le-Ferne, a small country village between Folkestone and Dover. With frigid anticipation, he has witnessed what may be the first vehicular accident he's ever seen. A young French woman (of a sterling, timeless beauty) identified only as Venus, has been thrown off her vehicle; a “Jetmobile”, avoiding a roadblock in her driving path. Her blood curdling scream hitting its crescendo, she has the attention of a nearby stranger. The stranger has the lined contours of a “Subterrain”, a hostile alien with a pistol in his right gloved hand. While the shock of the scene no doubt stuns the little fellow; this moment literally fades to black. Yet the boy is still conscious, senses intact. To add more eeriness to this scenario, the young man's ears are taken by the sounding of dramatic music incidentals - which hit on note as the helpless maiden crashes upon some nearby rocks. The year is 1961, and little Ralph Titterton is watching this transpire on his TV set, a well placed commercial break in place for the end of Act I of “Planet 46,” of the Gerry Anderson TV series "Fireball XL5." The music, arranged and conducted by a man named Barry Gray, score a fantastic interlude in Ralph's life---an interlude which will follow acts of his life to come. Barry Gray was a composer, an arranger---a consummate musician whose works have been adored by children and adults alike. -

Gerry Anderson's PREMISE: in the Late 1960S, the United States
Gerry Anderson’s UFO PREMISE: In the late 1960s, the United States government issued a report officially denying the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects. The government agencydesigned to look into the phenomenon, Project Blue Book, was also closed down and people were led to believe that (as far as the government was concerned) UFOs had not come to Earth. The format of the television series takes this occurrence as a cover-up by the government in an attempt to hide the fact that we were not only visited by creatures from space, but brutally attacked. Their reasoning was that mass hysteria and panic would result if the common man discovered that his world was being invaded by extraterrestrials. So, in secret, the major governments of the world created SHADO − Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defense Organi- zation. From it’scenter of operations hidden beneath a film studio (where bizarre comings and goings would remain commonplace), SHADO commands a fleet of submarines (armed with sea-to-air strikecraft), aircraft, land vehicles, satellites and a base on the Moon. MAJOR CHARACTERS: COMMANDER ED STRAKER−Leader of SHADO. He is totally dedicated to his job, almost to the point of obsession. COLONEL ALEC FREEMAN−Straker’ssecond-in-command. To combat this threat the United Nations created SHADO, a top-secret organisation utilising the latest technology available to defend the Earth. To complement the series, the Andersons frequent musical collaborator Barry Gray created a multifaceted score that gave the programme its own musical identity. This Album is the very first commercial release of Gray’s score, making it finally available to more listeners worldwide. Welcome to SHADO SHADO – Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation – is based from a secret headquarters deep beneath the Harlington Straker Film Studio. Earth’s first line of defence is SID, the Space Intruder Detector, a satellite in Earth’s orbit created to spot incoming UFOs. -
Music and Sound Design for the Screen Conference Abstracts
1 ABSTRACTS FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER 9.30-11.00 Session 1a – Sounding the Archives Chair: Denis Condon (Maynooth University) Soundscapes in fragmented local archive film Angela English (Birmingham City University) Fragmented local archive film may have no provenance, no synchronized sound and no corpus of contextual information available. Shand (2014) notes that ‘assessing the significance of amateur films in regional film collections is made difficult by the lack of synchronized sound in many such films. These are now effectively silent films even if an accompanying soundtrack once existed’. (p.197) My ongoing research into local archive film, public history, place and audience reception has shown that many of these films have commentary, vox pops and natural sound as well as diegetic music and library music dubbed on to provide atmosphere. This paper explores how these soundscapes help contextualise fragmented archive film and how audiences might respond to this. I will explore this through analysis of the findings of recent audience engagement studies I have undertaken using creative interventions into practice with archive film. These studies involved screening fragmented archive film to local community audiences in outer London and four New Towns on the periphery of London. As part of my exploration of soundscapes, I will screen and analyse rare archive footage used in the audience studies. Hallam (2010) suggests that local film is a ‘distinct category of film culture. The spatial imaginary of the ‘local’ film can develop a new chapter in film historiography’. (p.280). In this paper I will demonstrate the important role that sound and music has to play in developing film historiography with archive film.
