Talking of old cinemas, there’s a brilliant book in this month’s magazine on The Manchester Picture Houses, full of great photos and memories everyone will relate to, on page 17. Betty Driver is a regular star on Talking Pictures TV. Every time we show her film Let’s Be Famous, we are inundated with calls from people surprised by her lovely singing voice. I’ve managed to track down a CD of her music, details on pages 18-19. You can buy it with a lovely DVD collection which includes Let’s Be Famous, our £20 deal for both this month. I recently had a lovely chat with Melvyn Hayes, who sends all our viewers his love. He says he was stopped in the street the other day after we aired one of his films and someone said to him, “Melvyn, saw you on TPTV yesterday, God you’ve aged!” he said: Given my career, at 86 years of age, that’s a shot in the arm, with the other two shots I’ve had lately, that makes 3!” – bless him! Melvyn hopes to join us at our next event in October. More dates for you all; info to follow but please put these on your calendars: Saturday 9th October 2021, our Saturday Morning Pictures show at the beautiful Savoy Cinema, Heaton Moor, Stockport, followed by a film quiz and, Sunday 10th October 2021 sees us back at the iconic Stockport Plaza. Mostly they come between 6 and 8 pm so you have a busy 2 hours. As it happens I had enough sweets to give to all with 2 wee mars bars left over which I confess I ate myself. I published some comments in various newspaper sites this week trying to voice some reason into the Brexit and Independence debates. Not sure it will do anything but at least I felt better having published them. I might also add that in newspapers such as the Guardian, Scotsman, Courier, etc. you will find many comments which can be just as interesting as the news story itself and of course you can also add your own comments if you wish.

It includes everything in the first 12 issues of your favourite Sci-Fi / Nostalgia magazine NB: Interviews and features will only appear in the following categorised lists if they give the subject more than just a passing mention. I know this is subjective, but I’ve tried to use my judgement as to what constitutes ‘meat on the bone’, if you see what I mean. You’ll find wide-ranging interviews and articles that cover many subjects in the Miscellaneous section at the end. What follows is strictly alphabetical, except with franchises like Star Wars where you’ll find them chronologically listed for ease. Reviews will normally be of the DVD, Blu-ray or cinema release. • Gb 1456 Thomas
GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION SCOPE AND CONTENT Documents relating to the career of director GERALD THOMAS (Born Hull 10/12/1920, died Beaconsfield 9/11/1993). When Gerald Thomas died, his producer partner of 40 years Peter Rogers said: ‘His epitaph will be that he directed all the Carry On films.’ Indeed, for an intense 20-year period Thomas directed the Carry On gang through their innuendo laden exploits, and became responsible, along with Rogers, for creating one of the most enduring and endearing British film series, earning him his place in British popular culture. Thomas originally studied to become a doctor, before war service with the Royal Sussex Regiment put paid to his medical career. When demobilised in 1946, he took a job as assistant in the cutting rooms of Two Cities Films at Denham Studios, where he took Assistant Editor credits on Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet (1948) and the John Mills thriller The October Man (1947). In 1949, he received his first full credit as editor, on the Margaret Lockwood melodrama Madness of the Heart (1949). During this time Peter Rogers had been working as associate producer with his wife, producer Betty Box, on such films as It’s Not Cricket (1949) and Don’t Ever Leave Me (1949). It was Venetian Bird in 1952 that first brought Thomas and Rogers together; Thomas employed as editor by director brother Ralph, and Rogers part of the producer team with Betty Box. Rogers was keen to form a director/producer pairing (following the successful example of Box and Ralph Thomas), and so gave Gerald his first directing credit on the Circus Friends (1956), a Children’s Film Foundation production.
