Food Science and Technology ISSN 0101-2061 Brazil nut sorting for aflatoxin prevention: a comparison between automatic and manual shelling methods Ariane Mendonça PACHECO1, Maristela MARTINS1* Abstract The impact of automatic and manual shelling methods during manual/visual sorting of different batches of Brazil nuts from the 2010 and 2011 harvests was evaluated in order to investigate aflatoxin prevention.The samples were tested as follows: in-shell, shell, shelled, and pieces in order to evaluate the moisture content (mc), water activity (Aw), and total aflatoxin (LOD = 0.3 µg/kg and LOQ 0.85 µg/kg) at the Brazil nut processing plant. The results of aflatoxins obtained for the manually shelled nut samples ranged from 3.0 to 60.3 µg/g and from 2.0 to 31.0 µg/g for the automatically shelled samples. All samples showed levels of mc below the limit of 15%; on the other hand, shelled samples from both harvests showed levels of Aw above the limit. There were no significant differences concerning the manual or automatic shelling results during the sorting stages. On the other hand, the visual sorting was effective in decreasing the aflatoxin contamination in both methods. Nairóbi, Quênia Abstract: Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) is one of the most important non-timber forest producing tree species in the Amazon. One aspect related to the sustainability of Brazil nut that has so far received very limited attention in literature is how the species’ distribution has changed through time and will continue to do so in light of anthropogenic climate change. We modeled the potential distribution of Brazil nut during different past climates as well as during several future time periods. Of the past time periods, the Last Glacial Maximum (~21,000 BP) had the biggest impact on the present distribution of Brazil nut. The distribution of suitable habitat may have been restricted primarily to several potential refugia across southern Amazonia. On the other hand, the oldest Brazil nut remains found at the Pedra Pintada cave (~11,000 BP) were probably harvested by early humans from trees that reached the area after natural range expansion from one or more smaller refugia which may have been located close to the Amazon River delta. -

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust Children’s Allergy Clinic Oral allergy syndrome Information for parents What is oral allergy syndrome? • In the common form, oral allergy syndrome usually causes redness, itching, burning and swelling of the lips, inside of the mouth, tongue and soft palate. A child will often refuse the food once it starts irritating their mouth. • Occasionally itching and swelling of the throat occurs. Other reactions such as hives (similar to nettle rash), conjunctivitis (itchy, watery eyes), rhinitis (inflammation inside the nose), asthma, nausea and vomiting may occur later. • Severe symptoms such as anaphylactic shock or breathing problems are rare. What are the causes? • Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is usually caused by an allergy to certain fruit and vegetables, especially when eaten raw. • Reactions to the same foods when they are cooked are less likely but can sometimes happen. The skin of certain fruit and vegetables can cause a reaction. • OAS is also associated with an allergy to pollen, especially from silver birch, but also grasses, ragweed (ragwort) and mugwort. 75% of people with silver birch allergy will have OAS. Allergic rhinitis symptoms may flare up when these pollens are in season. • OAS can also occur in people allergic to rubber latex. What to do if a child has an allergic reaction If an allergic reaction occurs, the child should stop eating the food immediately and spit it out. Give the child a dose of antihistamine. In the unlikely event that a severe reaction occurs, then dial 999 for an ambulance. page 2 OAS reactions are usually immediate and occur within 1-5 minutes of the problem food coming into contact with the mouth. -

A demographic study was carried out on Bertholletia excelsa, the Brazil nut tree, in two primary forest sites in Northern Bolivia where Brazil nuts have been harvested for several decades. In spite of the large proportion (93%) of seeds that are harvested, reasonable densities of recently emerged seedlings were found. Seeds of Bertholletia are contained in woody fruits that are primarily opened by agoutis. Most fruits are left untouched on the forest floor for 1–2 y before they are opened, possibly due to high energetic costs of fruit opening just after fruit fall. However, the proportion of viable seeds is strongly reduced in older fruits. Growth in diameter at breast height (dbh) was low for pole-sized trees (< 15 cm dbh) and adult trees (> 100 cm dbh) and peaked for intermediate-sized trees (30–60 cm). These trees often attained a growth rate of > 1.5 cm y−1, which is high compared with other non-pioneer tropical trees. This, and the strong growth response to increased light availability found for seedlings and saplings, suggest that Bertholletia excelsa can be classified as a gap-dependent species. -

We report the case of a 20-year-old woman with documented Brazil nut allergy who developed widespread urticaria and mild dyspnea after intercourse with her boyfriend who had earlier consumed Brazil nuts. Skin prick testing with the boyfriend’s semen after Brazil nut consumption confi rmed signifi cant reactivity whereas a sample before nut consumption was negative. We believe this to be the fi rst case of a sexually transmitted allergic reaction. Key words: Brazil nut allergy. Semen. Sexual transmission. ■ Resumen Las nueces del Brasil constituyen la segunda causa más frecuente de alergia en el Reino Unido. Describimos el caso de una mujer de 20 años de edad con alergia documentada a nueces del Brasil que sufrió urticaria generalizada y disnea leve tras mantener relaciones sexuales con su pareja, que previamente había consumido nueces del Brasil. Las pruebas cutáneas con semen del varón, recogido tras haber consumido nueces del Brasil, confi rmó una reactividad importante, mientras que la muestra tomada antes del consumo de dichas nueces no produjo ninguna reacción.
