Acerca de los genitalia en escarabajos (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea): algunas observaciones a un artículo reciente. Acta Zoológica Mexicana (n. s.), 30(2): 439-443. RESUMEN. Se analiza críticamente una publicación extensa sobre los genitalia en diferentes grupos de Coleoptera Scarabaeinae; se subraya la necesidad de revisar las homologías de las diferentes estructuras así como de unificar la nomenclatura en una forma no arbitraria como una precondicionante para su uso en taxonomía y análisis filogenético. Male, and less frequently female, genitalia characters have often been utilized in beetles taxonomic and phylogenetic research, since as early as the beginning of the 20th century, starting at least from the seminal books by Sharp and Muir (1912), and subsequently by Jeannel (1955), where the genital anatomy of Coleoptera was first systematized (for some historical remarks mostly concerning Scarab beetles see Zu- nino 2012). The prevailing importance of genitalia not just in alpha taxonomy, but as reliable phylogenetic tracers against external morphological characters underlies a great amount of papers throughout at least fifty years; it was explicitly stressed by Zunino (1983, 1987), Zunino & Palestrini (1988), and was formally demonstrated by Tarasov & Solodovnikov (2011) by means of a cladistic analysis of a large sample of Onthophagini. Medina et al. (2013) emphasize the importance of recognizing the ho- mologies within different male genital structures in the frame of Scarabaeinae, and of unifying the relative nomenclature, for several scientific purposes. -

The new genus, which is well characterized by an exclusive set of characters, comprises, at present, 26 species. Twenty species were formerly included in the genus Onthophagus and six were identified and here described as new species: Tiaronthophagus angolensis n.sp., T. jossoi n.sp., T. katanganus n.sp., T. rolandoi n.sp., T. saadaniensis n.sp., and T. zambesianus n.sp. A phylogenetic analysis that is based on a combined matrix, including discrete and landmark characters, was done. The landmark characters were tested using the geometric morphometrics techniques before their inclusion in the matrix. One single, fully resolved tree was obtained, with Tiaronthophagus constituting a distinct, monophyletic clade within Onthophagini, which was clearly separated from the other genera examined here. The biogeographical analysis identified the Central Africa as the ancestral area of the new genus and it mainly accounted for dispersal events leading to the present distribution. -

Scientists have investigated how the number of species varies with elevation for the most disparate plant and animal groups worldwide. However, species richness is only one aspect of biodiversity that does not consider species abundances. The so-called Hill numbers are a unified family of mathematical indices that express biodiversity in terms of both richness and abundance. We used Hill numbers to investigate how dung beetle diversity varies along an elevational gradient in a Mediterranean mountain. We found that scarabaeids were the most abundant dung beetle group. These insects construct subterranean nests protecting their offspring from desiccation during warm and dry summer climatic conditions. Department Risk Analysis Application to add Euonthophagus crocatus, Onthophagus marginalis spp. andalusicus and Gymnopleurus sturmi (three species of dung beetle) to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 List of Specimens taken to be Suitable for Live Import November 2019 INTRODUCTION Purpose of the proposed import The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) seeks to import three beetle species from the Scarabaeinae subfamily, Euonthophagus crocatus, Onthophagus marginalis spp.andalusicus and Gymnopleurus sturmi into Australia as part of the large Rural Research and Development for Profit program ‘Dung Beetles as Ecosystem Engineers’. The Scarabaeinae subfamily is known commonly as the ‘true dung beetles’. There are over 7000 species of dung beetle worldwide. Dung beetles have preferences based on vegetative cover, dung type, soil type, flight times (diurnal, twilight or nocturnal), climate and season (Doube and Marshall, 2014). The purpose of introducing E. crocatus, O. m. andalusicus and G. sturmi is to fill the current seasonal and geographic gaps in dung beetle activity in southern Australia. The three dung beetle species will be bred to large numbers (8 000+) then released into the environment at targeted sites to enhance dung dispersal and burial and to limit bush fly larvae survival in major sheep, beef and milk producing areas of southern Australia. Adult E. crocatus, O. m. andalusicus and G. sturmi will be collected from several localities in south-western Europe and northern Africa and air-freighted to Australia (up to 500 pairs per consignment). The beetles will be held in an Approved Arrangement site (quarantine) in Canberra. Their eggs will be treated with disinfecting agent (Virkon®), removed from quarantine, reared to adulthood and released at targeted sites and/or used for the establishment of mass-rearing colonies, the progeny of which will be released. -

Published 1 June 2005. The karyotypes of 2 species of Oniticellini and 19 species of Onthophagini are described and illustrated. Euonthophagus pallipes, Caccobius schreberi, Euonthophagus amyntas, E. atramentarius, Onthophagus taurus, O. hirtus, O. furcatus, O. stylocerus, O. vacca, O. similis, O. opacicollis, O. coenobita, O. lucidus, O. ovatus, O. joannae, O. ruficapillus, O. gazella and O. albicornis all have karyotypes with 2N = 18 + Xy. Only female karyotypes have been obtained for Euoniticellus fulvus, Onthophagus illyricus and O. maki. These species have 2N = 20 chromosomes, including the unidentified sex chromosomes. B-chromosomes have been found in Euonthophagus amyntas, Onthophagus vacca, O. similis and O. gazella, and chromosome polymorphisms result- ing from pericentric inversions have been found in Onthophagus vacca and O. albicornis. Centromeric C-bands, of varying sizes, are present in nearly all the chromosomes, and the species of Euoniticellus and Euonthophagus have some chromosomes with a totally heterochro- matic arm, a feature not encountered in the Onthophagus species. The three species of the Onthophagus ovatus group have karyotypes clearly distinct from one another, as do O. similis and O. opacicollis. Characters to separate the Afghan species Euonthophagus hazariensis (Kabakov, 1977) from its closely related Ira- nian species Euonthophagus verberatus Ziani, 2006 are supplied. Keywords. After the description of Euonthophagus verberatus Ziani, 2006, from Western Iran, I came across two paratypes of E. hazariensis (Kabakov, 1977) described from Eastern Afghanistan and unknown to me. The two species are phaneromorphologically very close, but they can be distinguished by the following characters:.
