Jean-Luc Nancy and the Deconstruction of Christianity by Tenzan Eaghll A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto ©Copyright by Tenzan Eaghll 2016 Jean-Luc Nancy and the Deconstruction of Christianity Tenzan Eaghll Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation is a study of the origins and development of the French philosopher Jean- Luc Nancy’s work on the “deconstruction of Christianity.” By situating Nancy's work in light of the broader Continental philosophical analysis of religion in the 20th Century, it argues that what Nancy calls the "deconstruction of Christianity" and the "exit from religion" is his unique intervention into the problem of metaphysical nihilism in Western thought. The author explains that Nancy’s work on religion does not provide a new “theory” for the study of religion or Christianity, but shows how Western metaphysical foundations are caught up in a process of decomposition that has been brought about by Christianity. For Nancy, the only way out of nihilism is to think of the world as an infinite opening unto itself, for this dis- encloses any transcendent principle of value or immanent notion of meaninglessness in the finite spacing of sense, and he finds the resources to think this opening within Christianity. By reading Christian notions like "God" and "creation ex nihilo" along deconstructive lines and connecting them with the rise and fall of this civilization that once called itself "Christendom," he attempts to expose "the sense of an absenting" that is both the condition of possibility for the West and what precedes, succeeds, and exceeds it. -

D’une avant-garde l’autre. Les entretiens de Robbe-Grillet avec Jean Thibaudeau Français L’article se propose d’examiner les entretiens d’Alain Robbe-Grillet avec Jean Thibaudeau sur France Culture en 1975 sous différents aspects : une analyse radiophonique montre que la « mise en son » constitue un degré zéro de l’esthétique radiophonique. L’analyse du dialogue dévoile que l’entretien est plutôt homophonique (Bakhtine) et se base sur un consensus de fond entre les deux auteurs, tandis que la mise en scène met en relief la spontanéité et l’authenticité d’un dialogue dont profite Alain Robbe-Grillet pour livrer une interprétation de sa propre carrière comme auteur, cinéaste et peintre. Celle-ci consiste avant tout à s’attribuer lui-même le rôle du Jeune Turc ou de l’avant-garde pas encore reconnue (Bourdieu), dont il décrit l’ascension vers la légitimité selon le métarécit (Lyotard) avant-gardiste, alors que tout porte à croire que sa position est en réalité bien différente, une attitude qui lui fait adopter, dans l’entretien le rôle de « bonimenteur » (John Rodden). English The article examines the interviews conducted by Jean Thibaudeau with Alain Robbe-Grillet on France Culture in 1975 from different angles: a radiophonic analysis shows that the sound editing constitutes a kind of zero degree of radio aesthetics, the analysis of the dialogue reveals that the interview is rather homophonic (Bakhtin) and based on a substantial consensus between the two writers, while the staging highlights the spontaneity and the authenticity of a dialogue which Alain Robbe-Grillet benefits from to deliver an interpretation of his own career as an author, filmmaker and painter. -

That instant is now fixed in cold marble. The grave of Maurice Blanchot can be found in the cemetery at Le Mesnil Saint-Denis, the suburb of Paris where latterly he lived in a cul- de-sac named Place des pensées. -

Some years earlier, when introducing Parages (1986), a book of his essays and lectures on and around Blanchot, Derrida had noted that he had recently rediscovered the narrative part of his friend’s oeuvre. -
