It will serve as a backdrop against which the saga of the calypsonian that unfolded; the various strains of calypso music and related innovations that have emerged; the extravaganza of carnival that developed; and the conflict that accompanied these events will be pitted. This chapter facilitates such endeavor. From its discovery in 1498 up until 1796 Trinidad had been a part of the Spanish Empire. Errol Hill (1976) has reported that around 1783, however, French speaking planters from the northern Caribbean islands of Santo Domingo (present day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Lucia and Grenada accepted an invitation extended to Catholics by King Charles III via the Cedula of Population to settle there. They brought with them their retinue of African slaves, their Patois French dialect, and their principal form of entertainment, street masquerading (p. 54-86). Out of a total population of 17,700 in 1789, the Africans numbered 10,000. By Hill’s (1972, 1976) accounts and by the accounts of others, after 1797, during the period of British rule which ended in 1962, the flow of immigrants into Trinidad became more diversified and included people from other British colonies, England, and Venezuela. -
Music As Sound, Music As Archive: Performing Creolization in Trinidad
Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 144-173 Music as Sound, Music as Archive: Performing Creolization in Trinidad Christopher L. Ballengee Anne Arundel Communtiy College, Maryland [email protected] This article positions performance as a key concept in understanding creolization. In doing so, it situates music as both sound and archive in analyses of Trinidadian tassa drumming, soca, and chutney-soca. Musical analysis provides useful insights into the processes of creolization, while revealing colonial and postcolonial relationships between groups of people that give shape and meaning to the music, past and present. I draw on notions of music as sound to further analyze the forces that work to control the Trinidadian soundscape by promoting or marginalizing musical styles in an effort to shape musical production according to the ideal of creole culture. I conclude by suggesting that the conventional notion of the archive has from its very beginnings been connected with elite desires to enumerate and historicize positions of power. In this context, musical performances analyzed in this study emerge as subaltern archival practices that run alongside mainstream archives and popular interpretations of history. In listening to Trinidadian music as sound and archive, I trace present and potential social structures while providing new ways of thinking about creolization as performance. HYPOTHESIS: Has Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago changed from the 1900s to 2012? INTRODUCTION Trinidad and Tobago Carnival and its constituent artistic forms-calypso, steel pan, soca and masquerade have been sources of trenchant social and political commentaries and the subject of considerable controversy throughout its history from its origins in colonial Trinidad, during the period of struggle against colonial rule and in the aftermath of the formation of an independent state. ( Green & Scher pg. 3) With a population descended from natives’ blacks of Africa, Indian, Chinese, several European countries, the Middle East, North and South America Trinidad and Tobago produced a festival which has cumulated and encompassed the imagination of its multiracial citizens. Central to understanding much of the Trinidadian psyche is to understand the festival culture of the island and no festival is greater than the Trinidad Carnival. The dynamism of the festival has sparked its reproduction throughout the rest of the Caribbean island chain, and as far away as Toronto, New York, Miami and Notting Hill. Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is one of grandeur, colour, revelry, rhythm, and gaiety. Evolving over the past two centuries from an elegant, exclusive affair to a truly all-inclusive national festival, it is by far the most spectacular event on the nation’s calendar. Although a major part of the Trinidad Carnival mystique lies in its unique ability to bring people of diverse backgrounds together in harmonious circumstances, the festival was not born to such noble pursuits. -

Recent ethnographies wholly accept hybridity as cultural models for the nation. This easy acceptance prompts important questions: how have creolization and hybridity discourses become commonsensical in the Caribbean, and what are the implications of the uncritical application of these frameworks to racially heterogeneous societies? Also, do hybridity projects in Trinidad and Tobago operate in a way similar to the way that Mestizaje and Mulataje operate in Latin America and other Caribbean islands? Based on ethnographic observations and the history of racialization in Trinidad, this dissertation explores how Black and mixed-race Trinidadians understand and negotiate implicit antiblackness in a racially "hybrid" nation? These questions are explored through deep ethnographic research that occurred in the context of the cosmopolitan Trinidadian capital city of Port of Spain. Through participant observation and engaging with Trinidadians at sites of liming, including the nightclubs and bars of Ariapita Avenue, cricket games at Queens Park Oval, and the annual pre-Lenten Carnival, this dissertation explores global antiblack racism, colorism, and the intersection of these social conditions with the middle-class. -

Trinidad English Creole Orthography: Language Enregisterment and Communicative Practices in a New Media Society Solange Anduze James (M.A., Linguistics) Thesis directed by: Kira Hall, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics Abstract In this study, I argue that new media discourse has facilitated the enregisterment of orthographies for languages that were primarily oral in the ‘pre-network society’ age. Specifically, I will look at this phenomenon as it applies to Trinidad English Creole, a formally oral Creole language from Trinidad and Tobago. I will investigate the sociolinguistic implications of orthographic and scriptural choices, and how such practices both index and constitute social hierarchies, identities, and relationships (Jaffe et al 2012). Prior to 1990, Trinidad English Creole rarely appeared in written form apart from fictional speech in postcolonial dialectal literature or as indirect speech in newspaper articles. -

Competition Regimes in the Caribbean Community and Sub-Saharan Africa: A Comparison Taimoon STEWART * The University of the West Indies Email: [email protected] Competition regimes are usually analysed through legal and economic lenses, taking existing markets as given, and examining the extent to which competition is present and identifying obstacles and market failures that hinder competition and enforcement of the law. In a pioneering study, Fox and Bakhoum interrogated the competition regimes in Sub-Saharan Africa through a historical and political-economy approach, revealing those market failures deeply rooted in the colonial experience. They then examined the competition regimes of those countries in that context. In this paper, a similar approach is used to examine economies in the Caribbean Community, providing historical insights into how those societies were created by European expansion and imperialism, with the resulting market failures that persist today, making diversification and transformation of these economies very challenging. This musical practice draws on an array of sounds that are distinctly local, yet certainly influenced by knowledge of and connections to the world at large. The sounds of Jamaica (reggae), Brazil (bossa nova), the United States (R&B, funk, disco) and India (sitar) amongst others can be heard and felt in the music. While the genre of jazz has largely been understood in reference to its origins in the United States, its dissemination across the world has become the focus of recent scholarly work. Jazz arrived in Trinidad and Tobago as early as the 1930s through film scores and radio broadcasts. However, the jazz emerging from Trinidad and Tobago today is quite distinct, sonically, from jazz in the United States. Critically, in this dissertation, I ask in what ways might the study of sound help to re- conceptualize the process of transnationalism. -
