235 Shrimp fishing in Mexico Based on the work of D. Aguilar and J. Grande-Vidal AN OVERVIEW Mexico has coastlines of 8 475 km along the Pacific and 3 294 km along the Atlantic Oceans. Shrimp fishing in Mexico takes place in the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, both by artisanal and industrial fleets. A large number of small fishing vessels use many types of gear to catch shrimp. The larger offshore shrimp vessels, numbering about 2 212, trawl using either two nets (Pacific side) or four nets (Atlantic). In 2003, shrimp production in Mexico of 123 905 tonnes came from three sources: 21.26 percent from artisanal fisheries, 28.41 percent from industrial fisheries and 50.33 percent from aquaculture activities. Shrimp is the most important fishery commodity produced in Mexico in terms of value, exports and employment. Catches of Mexican Pacific shrimp appear to have reached their maximum. There is general recognition that overcapacity is a problem in the various shrimp fleets. DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURE Although trawling for shrimp started in the late 1920s, shrimp has been captured in inshore areas since pre-Columbian times. Magallón-Barajas (1987) describes the lagoon shrimp fishery, developed in the pre-Hispanic era by natives of the southeastern Gulf of California, which used barriers built with mangrove sticks across the channels and mouths of estuaries and lagoons. The National Fisheries Institute (INP, 2000) and Magallón-Barajas (1987) reviewed the history of shrimp fishing on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It began in 1921 at Guaymas with two United States boats. -

Carnival and the Christian Introduction The matter of the Christian and Carnival is, to many, an unresolved and perhaps even unresolvable one. Over the years, views by pastoral leaders have been diametrically opposed to one another. It is critical however for the Christian to ask questions and carefully evaluate their position in an effort to locate themselves at a place that honours and glorifies God as is consistent with Biblical principles. I am not suggesting that this essay will have “all the answers” however it is my hope that it will provoke reflection and conversation towards responsible and informed decision making. Definition What is carnival? Defining carnival is affected by the difficulty in separating definition from description especially since description varies both historically and contextually. Carnival has changed through the years and has different components in different places. Definition therefore will be using a two-layered approach; the etymological (word meaning) and the observational (what we see). The observational approach includes identifying what have been consistent ingredients over the years. The etymological The word ‘carnival’ comes from Latin origin meaning “farewell to the flesh”, a word coined to reflect a practice where people were encouraged to entertain the desires of the flesh, abandon restraint, ignore discretion and disregard boundaries as a last “hurrah” before a season of self-denial and Christian discipline. Related in meaning, is the term Mardi Gras (French for ‘Fat Tuesday’) which was the French expression for that last opportunity of indulgence before Ash Wednesday and Lent. Some saw this as a kind of purge, a time to get rid of sin by giving expression to it. -

Ohio University The glamorization of alcohol in contemporary Guyanese Chutney music Nadine Sanchara April, 2016 The glamorization of alcohol in contemporary Guyanese Chutney music Introduction/Background Music is an integral part of Guyanese culture. Being a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society, musical encounters, musical interaction and musical exchange are of special importance, especially in exploring the transfer and adoption of musical attributes across and among cultural communities (Cambridge 6). This paper aims at highlighting the extent to which alcohol use is glamorized in Guyanese Chutney music. Since music can influence action (Engels et al. 530) it is important to understand the lyrics of these songs in order to begin to tackle a larger problem. Chutney music is often referred to as an “Indo-Caribbean” genre of music, present in the Caribbean, mainly in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname. It is largely influenced by Indian music, particularly Bhojpuri folk music (Bhojpuri is a language spoken in some Indian regions such as Utar Pradesh and Bihar, from where many Indian immigrants were brought to Guyana during indentureship). Chutney music does, however, have influences from African, Western and other cultures. It is a fast paced genre of music which makes use of instruments such as the harmonium, dhantaal, dholak and tabla, among others (Ramnarine 12). As much a part of Guyanese culture as Chutney music is the culture of “rum drinking.” As of 2010, the average Guyanese over 15 years old consumed more than eight liters of pure alcohol each year, compared to a global average of 6.2 liters (WHO 155). A study conducted by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2008 revealed that alcohol is the number one drug abused in Guyana (1). -

Celebrating Our Calypso Monarchs 1939- 1980
Celebrating our Calypso Monarchs 1939-1980 T&T History through the eyes of Calypso Early History Trinidad and Tobago as most other Caribbean islands, was colonized by the Europeans. What makes Trinidad’s colonial past unique is that it was colonized by the Spanish and later by the English, with Tobago being occupied by the Dutch, Britain and France several times. Eventually there was a large influx of French immigrants into Trinidad creating a heavy French influence. As a result, the earliest calypso songs were not sung in English but in French-Creole, sometimes called patois. African slaves were brought to Trinidad to work on the sugar plantations and were forbidden to communicate with one another. As a result, they began to sing songs that originated from West African Griot tradition, kaiso (West African kaito), as well as from drumming and stick-fighting songs. The song lyrics were used to make fun of the upper class and the slave owners, and the rhythms of calypso centered on the African drum, which rival groups used to beat out rhythms. Calypso tunes were sung during competitions each year at Carnival, led by chantwells. These characters led masquerade bands in call and response singing. The chantwells eventually became known as calypsonians, and the first calypso record was produced in 1914 by Lovey’s String Band. Calypso music began to move away from the call and response method to more of a ballad style and the lyrics were used to make sometimes humorous, sometimes stinging, social and political commentaries. During the mid and late 1930’s several standout figures in calypso emerged such as Atilla the Hun, Roaring Lion, and Lord Invader and calypso music moved onto the international scene. -

trinidadfive scenes Rich in nature and culture—and not heavily commercialized—this island is one of the best spots in the Caribbean STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY Susan Kraus 58 LM w i16 t’s often overlooked among other Caribbean destinations. After all, Trinidad—the larger of the two islands that constitute the nation ITrinidad and Tobago—is the most southern of all Caribbean islands and only 7 miles from Venezuela. Its climate is as much South American as Caribbean. But what makes Trinidad an outlier among Caribbean islands also makes it a delightful place to visit. Trinidad is a rare vacation destination that is not tourist-driven. It is rich in diversity, more a melting-pot than even the U.S., and it has an abundance of natural attractions. Oddly, flights to this island often cost less than flights to islands much closer to the United States. Trinidad is an intriguing location for those seeking a beach … but something more as well. Here are some of my favorite scenes from a recent trip to Trinidad. SCENE ONE: THE PANYARD (WITH A SIDE OF DOUBLES) I’m walking along a side street in downtown Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad. Storefronts and cement walls line narrow sidewalks, so it is hard to see what is ahead. But I’m drawn toward the music that echoes across the pavement. The sounds are the compelling beat of a steel pan band gathering in the outdoor rehearsal and performance space known as a panyard. Usually a cemented-over vacant lot and often partially covered by a high tin open-air roof, panyards are scattered across Trinidad and gather in the hundred-plus street bands and orchestras. -

This paper analyses current land use and development policies in three Caribbean locations and one at the mouth of the Amazon River to determine if these policies are sufficient to protect economic, natural, and population resources based on current projections of urbanization and sea-level rise. Where policies are not deemed sufficient, the authors will address the question of how land use and infrastructure policies could be adjusted to most cost- effectively mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on the economies and urban populations.
