Writing a dissertation was not easy. Most of the time it was simply hard work. More than once I reached the limits of what I thought I could do or achieve. I had to realise that writing a dissertation not only means thinking about and developing an argument for years, but to acknowledge and accept the change it effects on a personal level. In the end I also learned that writing a dissertation was more than hard work — it was a process of getting closer to the person I would like to become. I want to thank Ansgar Nünning for founding the Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) as well as the International PhD Programme (IPP). I was welcomed warmly in Gießen in October 2015 and deeply appreciate the institutional, academic, financial and moral support both programmes gave me. I also want to particularly thank the support system the GCSC offers for young mothers. Combining family life and pursuing a PhD is difficult and the GCSC made it easier if not even possible. I wholeheartedly thank my first supervisor Michael Basseler. His input and feedback pushed this dissertation into the right direction and was always poignant and constructive. -
Few People Realize the Extent to Which Japanese People Have Interacted with and Been Influenced by African Americans and Their History
positions Beyond an Alliance of Color: The African American Impact on Modern Japan Yukiko Koshiro Few people realize the extent to which Japanese people have interacted with and been influenced by African Americans and their history. Japanese high school students today at least read excerpts from original works by Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Martin Luther King Jr., and Marian Anderson in Ministry of Education–approved Eng- lish textbooks.1 Yet no Japanese history book pays homage to those African Americans who have played a substantial role in U.S.-Japanese relations since their earliest phase: Pyrrus Concer, a former slave who came to Japan before Commodore Perry;2 Carrie Wilson, the daughter of a former slave from Missouri, who married Masumizu Kuninosuke, an early Japanese set- tler in the famed Wakamatsu Colony in Sacramento, California, together with whom she heralded a history of Japanese immigrants of African Amer- ican heritage;3 or the Philadelphia Royal Giants of the Negro League who positions 11:1 © 2003 by Duke University Press Published by Duke University Press positions positions 11:1 Spring 2003 184 visited Japan in 1927, four years earlier than the (all-white) All Star Ameri- can Major League baseball team.4 Ever since the American media played up derogatory remarks on African Americans by Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party politicians in the 1980s, the public seems to refuse to think any further, but take it for granted that all Japanese are racists who avoid contacts with African American people. It is time to bring to light long-ignored Japanese readings of African American history, literature, and struggle and investigate why the story of Japanese interactions with African Americans has been muted rather than celebrated.5 There are some reasons for the silence. -

Antigua and Barbuda an annotated critical bibliography by Riva Berleant-Schiller and Susan Lowes, with Milton Benjamin Volume 182 of the World Bibliographical Series 1995 Clio Press ABC Clio, Ltd. (Oxford, England; Santa Barbara, California; Denver, Colorado) Abstract: Antigua and Barbuda, two islands of Leeward Island group in the eastern Caribbean, together make up a single independent state. The union is an uneasy one, for their relationship has always been ambiguous and their differences in history and economy greater than their similarities. Barbuda was forced unwillingly into the union and it is fair to say that Barbudan fears of subordination and exploitation under an Antiguan central government have been realized. Barbuda is a flat, dry limestone island. Its economy was never dominated by plantation agriculture. Instead, its inhabitants raised food and livestock for their own use and for provisioning the Antigua plantations of the island's lessees, the Codrington family. After the end of slavery, Barbudans resisted attempts to introduce commercial agriculture and stock-rearing on the island. They maintained a subsistence and small cash economy based on shifting cultivation, fishing, livestock, and charcoal-making, and carried it out under a commons system that gave equal rights to land to all Barbudans. Antigua, by contrast, was dominated by a sugar plantation economy that persisted after slave emancipation into the twentieth century. Its economy and goals are now shaped by the kind of high-impact tourism development that includes gambling casinos and luxury hotels. The Antiguan government values Barbuda primarily for its sparsely populated lands and comparatively empty beaches. This bibliography is the only comprehensive reference book available for locating information about Antigua and Barbuda. -

B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

Beat out of blood with words sad-sung In strange un-Negro tongue So long So far away Is Africa -Langston Hughes, Free in a White Society INTRODUCTION When I started working in HISD’s Community Services my first assignment was working with inner city students that came to us straight from TYC (Texas Youth Commission). Many of these young secondary students had committed serious crimes, but at that time they were not treated as adults in the courts. Teaching these young students was a rewarding and enriching experience. You really had to be up close and personal with these students when dealing with emotional problems that would arise each day. Problems of anguish, sadness, low self-esteem, disappointment, loneliness, and of not being wanted or loved, were always present. The teacher had to administer to all of these needs, and in so doing got to know and understand the students. Each personality had to be addressed individually. Many of these students came from one parent homes, where the parent had to work and the student went unsupervised most of the time. In many instances, students were the victims of circumstances beyond their control, the problems of their homes and communities spilled over into academics. The teachers have to do all they can to advise and console, without getting involved to the extent that they lose their effectiveness. -

L'italia E L'eurovision Song Contest Un Rinnovato
La musica unisce l'Europa… e non solo C'è chi la definisce "La Champions League" della musica e in fondo non sbaglia. L'Eurovision è una grande festa, ma soprattutto è un concorso in cui i Paesi d'Europa si sfidano a colpi di note. Tecnicamente, è un concorso fra televisioni, visto che ad organizzarlo è l'EBU (European Broadcasting Union), l'ente che riunisce le tv pubbliche d'Europa e del bacino del Mediterraneo. Noi italiani l'abbiamo a lungo chiamato Eurofestival, i francesi sciovinisti lo chiamano Concours Eurovision de la Chanson, l'abbreviazione per tutti è Eurovision. Oggi più che mai una rassegna globale, che vede protagonisti nel 2016 43 paesi: 42 aderenti all'ente organizzatore più l'Australia, che dell'EBU è solo membro associato, essendo fuori dall'area (l’anno scorso fu invitata dall’EBU per festeggiare i 60 anni del concorso per via dei grandi ascolti che la rassegna fa in quel paese e che quest’anno è stata nuovamente invitata dall’organizzazione). L'ideatore della rassegna fu un italiano: Sergio Pugliese, nel 1956 direttore della RAI, che ispirandosi a Sanremo volle creare una rassegna musicale europea. La propose a Marcel Bezençon, il franco-svizzero allora direttore generale del neonato consorzio eurovisione, che mise il sigillo sull'idea: ecco così nascere un concorso di musica con lo scopo nobile di promuovere la collaborazione e l'amicizia tra i popoli europei, la ricostituzione di un continente dilaniato dalla guerra attraverso lo spettacolo e la tv. E oltre a questo, molto più prosaicamente, anche sperimentare una diretta in simultanea in più Paesi e promuovere il mezzo televisivo nel vecchio continente. -
Cantos De Las Communidades Haitianas En Cuba
CANTOS DE LAS COMMUNIDADES HAITIANAS EN CUBA DANIEL MIRABEAU Los cantos de este artículo han sido recolectados con la ayuda de cantantes en Cuba, así como a partir de grabaciones comercializadas y a partir de captaciones vídeos disponibles en la toila. Las traducciones, las transcripciones musicales y las anotaciones son del autor. Las letras de canciones comprenden dos o tres entradas lingüísticas: criollo cubano, criollo haitiano y castellano. El lado criollo cubano respeta la escritura y pronunciación de las personas que ha transmitido los cantos. El lado criollo haitiano acerca a escritura contemporánea del criollo en Haití1. El lado castellano intenta acercar el sentido del texto original. Para los nombres propios y los nombres de estilos musicales, el contexto de la frase hace preferir la escritura en criollo cubano, criollo haitiano o en castellano. Dentro de la letra de canción, la parte solista figura sobre la columna de izquierda y la respuesta del coro sobre la columna de derecha, en itálico. Respecto a las partituras musicales, la voz solista y el coro se diferencian por su tipo de letra. Las microvariaciones en las repeticiones del solista son una interpretación libre del autor. Todas las transcripciones musicales de canción son voluntariamente unificadas sin alteraciones, excepto las accidentales. A cada uno de los intérpretes de transponer las partituras con arreglo a su tesitura de voz. Aparecen en este artículo los cantos interpretados por los grupos siguientes: Babul (Guantanamo), Ban Rara (Guantanamo), Cai Dijé o La Bel Kreyol2 (Camagüey), Conjunto Folklorico de Oriente (Santiago de Cuba), Cutumba (Santiago de Cuba), Galibata (Santiago de Cuba), Grupo Thompson (Santiago de Cuba), La Caridad (Palma Soriano), Lokosia (Guantanamo), Pilon de Cauto (Palma Soriano), Renacer haitiano (Ciego de Avila). -
Localization and the Chinese Overseas: Acculturation, Assimilation, Hybridization, Creolization, and Identification
Cultural and Religious Studies, February 2018, Vol. 6, No. 2, 73-87 doi: 10.17265/2328-2177/2018.02.001 D DAVID PUBLISHING Localization and the Chinese Overseas: Acculturation, Assimilation, Hybridization, Creolization, and Identification TAN Chee-Beng Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China Based on materials on the localized Chinese overseas, including the Melaka Babas, who are mostly Malay-speaking Chinese, this article reflects on the use of such terms as acculturation and assimilation, as well as hybridization and creolization, in relation to highly localized Chinese. All these concepts are seen as different ways of describing cultural formation in transcultural context. In particular, the relevance of using creolization to refer to the kind of creative process of cultural formation beyond its original usage in the Caribbean is discussed. This results in the identification of fragmented creolization as in the case of the Caribbean and a rooted creolization as in the case of the Babas. The author shall first discuss the issues of assimilation and integration, followed by hybridization and creolization. This is followed by the discussion on localization of Chinese overseas and identity. The concluding section provides some remarks on the concepts reviewed, and three main categories of acculturated Chinese are identified, namely, Chinese who are linguistically assimilated but still observe major Chinese traditions, Chinese who are so acculturated to the mainstream society that they hardly practice Chinese traditions, and Chinese who are both highly localized and highly mixed “racially”.
