JOAN JOANJOAN OF OFOF ARC ARCARC CHURCH CHURCHCHURCH In this weekend’s Gospel reading from Luke, Chapter 12, Jesus says to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” I write this after reading Monday morning’s technology sections in the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Ramon Valley Times, and salivating over the reviews of the new electronic gadgets coming into the market. Just when I think I NEED that new tablet, I am reminded that life does not consist of possessions. Perhaps a passage like this invites us to be grateful for the many we have, and to share the bounty of God’s goodness with others.

A word of thanks to the Ministry and the 9206 for an absolutely wonderful evening last Saturday evening! The 4th Annual Adobo Feed Dinner Dance Hawaiian Night was a splendid success – the food was, as my family in Hawai’i would say, “onolicious – broke da ‘mout.” The sounds of Hawaii and Tahiti permeated the gym, and from what I’ve been able to see on Saturday night, St. Joan of Arc parishioners can really “cut a rug”! The proceeds from the event will help to defray the costs of purchasing an icon of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino , as well as helping to fund our parish Simbang Gabi Novena in November. Mahalo and salamat to all who attended and for those who helped to plan and organize this wonderful mid-summer event that is fast-becoming an annual tradition here at St. Joan of Arc.

“Who am I to judge?” These were the words of Francis last week, as he was returning to the Vatican from World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pope Francis held an impromptu press conference onboard the flight, an unprecedented hour and a half exchange that the Vatican press corps had not experienced in years. Pope Francis answer was in response to a question about gay . He went on further to comment on the role of women in the , as well as pastoral responses to divorced and/ or remarried. Although Pope Francis reiterated the church’s position on the ordination of women to the priesthood, he went on to say, “Let us remember that Mary is more important than the bishop apostles, so women in the church are more important than bishops and priests.” Wow. Peace and Blessings, Fr. Jayson

Updated 7/22/2013 SANSAN RAMON, RAMON, CA CA Page Page Five Five SJA 2012 Annual Financial Report Summary Presented at Masses on July 13/14

“Just $2 More”

The 3 Measures of Financial Health for Parishes Debt – Does the parish carry any debt and, if so, what kind and how much? St. Joan has NO DEBT!

Savings – For emergencies, the recommends a minimum of 2 months of operating expenses in savings accounts. In its savings accounts, St. Joan’s balances equal a bit more than 2 months of operating expenses.

Weekly Plate Collections - Does the parish generate enough in Sunday plate collections to cover/exceed oper- ating costs and program/ministry expenses? In 2012, St. Joan’s Sunday plate collections DID NOT cover our operating/ministry/programs costs; our shortfall in 2012 was $75,000.

We are at a financial crossroads.

Although St. Joan is solid in two of the three legs of our financial foundation, it is critical that we increase our weekly plate collection income to cover our operating and ministry/program costs. The benefits to doing so will be: Eliminating our $75,000 shortfall Strengthening the third leg of our financial foundation Increasing services we provide while lightening the workload on Fr. Ray.

After continually cutting costs over the past three years, there are growing demands on the services provided by our ministries. Our mission calls on us to meet these increased needs, which means increasing staff hours, at additional cost, while easing the load taken on by Fr. Ray over the past three years.

So what will it take?

Because we are such a large parish, what it will take from each one of us is simply not that much. Just $2 more!

With more than 1,800 adults attending our five Masses each weekend, it only takes an increase of $2 more per adult to generate an additional $3,600 each week – which adds up to $180,000 more each year!

Not all of us will be able to afford $2 more each week. But some of us can afford $3, or $4, or $5 or more each week. And those of us who can afford more will cover those of us who can’t afford any increase right now. It’s our mission….”Being Christ for others as Christ is to us.”

SJA Finance Council thanks all of you for your commitment to stewardship – in your time, in your talent, and in your treasure. And, remember, when it comes to your treasure….just $2 more!

Pope Francis: "What Does the Cross Teach Us?” about where our treasure is In Pope Francis’ concluding relection at this WYD Friday's traditional Way of the Cross (ritual text), he presented "three questions.” This selection in answer to his question 2 seems to answer “Where our treasure is as believing Catholic Christians?: What has the Cross given to those who have gazed upon it or touched it? What has it left in each one of us? It gives us a treasure that no one else can give: the certainty of the unshakable love which God has for us. A love so great that it enters into our sin and forgives it, enters into our suffering and gives us the strength to bear it. It is a love which enters into death to conquer it and to save us. The Cross of Christ contains all the love of God, his immeasurable mercy. For this is a love in which we can place all our trust, in which we can believe. Dear young people, let us entrust ourselves to Jesus, let us give ourselves over entirely to him (cf. Lumen Fidei, 16)! Only in Christ cruciied and risen can we ind salvation and redemption. With him, evil, suffering, and death do not have the last word, because he gives us hope and life: he has transformed the Cross from an instrument of hate, defeat and death into a sign of love, and life. Stewardship This Week: Where is your Treasure? This Gospel reading confronts one of the central challenges for faithful stewards living in the richest country in the world. How much is enough? Or, as the late Thomas Murphy often phrased it: "What do I own and what owns me?" Personal greed (the bigger barns we all lust after) has always been an important topic through the centuries among pilgrims on the spiritual journey. In this day and age, however, we are keenly aware of how personal and communal consumption patterns have a much wider impact on the planet than we ever appreciated before. Greed and hoarding are expressed in many choices and aspects of life and the Gospel reminds us to choose wisely by embracing what really matters—the values that Jesus taught us: love, forgiveness, a just sharing, peace and harmony. Simple living is not only a prudent path for each of us Individually, but it also opens us to a collective, positive impact on the world that we can only make together. Social justice and Stewardship walk side by side. What is our response as faith-filled adults?

Be the change you want to see in your parish! Looking for ways to learn more about the Church’s social mission? ANNUAL MISSION CO-OP APPEAL

This weekend is the Annual Mission Cooperation Plan Appeal here at St. Joan of Arc. This weekend we are honored to have Sister Louise Grundish, SC, with us to share the good news of the mission works of the Sisters of of Seton Hill, Illi- nois, and their work in , Korea and Ecuador. The Sisters of Charity began their work in Korea over 50 years ago, and their numbers have grown over the years. With an initial group of 4 American sisters in 1960, they have grown to presently include 206 sisters working in the Korean Province of the order. We welcome this opportunity to increase our awareness about their missionary work and to support their ministry with prayer and funding. Please share a bit of your heart and pocket- book with the Sisters of Charity as they touch lives with the love and compassion of Christ. LIGHT EGDE EDGE Scripture NIGHT Movie Night Trip to Catholic Worker House 7 - 8:00 in MPR 7 - 9:15 pm in Church 10:30 - 2:30 in Youth Center Conference Room

McJordan, MJ, from the , is 10 years old and one of nine children. He is very bright, a great writer for his age, polite and extremely sweet. Sadly, MJ’s mother passed away in December of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. We were able to send additional money to pay for the rest of the family to have medical exams and xrays. They found out that MJ and one now also have Pulmonary Tuberculosis and one sister has Pneumonitis. They each are receiving medication thanks to support from our community and we will get an update soon to see if their condition has improved. Please continue to keep the entire family in your prayers.

Gladys, from Guatemala, is 9 years old and one of eight children. She just recently learned to write on her own so her sister is no longer writing letters for her. She tries hard in school and enjoys playing with her dolls. We have a SJA family that will visiting her next week, so we can’t wait to hear about their visit with her.

The children are so good about writing to us several times a year. All LIGHT members are encouraged to send letters, pictures, and/or stickers to Gladys and MJ. Items should be dropped off at the Youth Center and we will mail for you.

Thank you to everyone who prayed for us during our week of service in the Mission District. We helped paint the San Catholic Worker House and did lots of painting and preparing for the upcoming year at St. Peter’s School.

It was a wonderful experience learning about Catholic Social Teaching and helping those in need!
