Before (No evening mass) attending at SLR, we had Mass for the Sacrament of been going to different churches in the area, when Anointing of the Sick and where it was convenient. We were sad to say, Saturday, April 6 merely ‘Sunday goers’ and poor practicing 5:00pm Mass Catholics at that. We go to Sunday mass (most often late) as an obligation and only when it suits Saturday Evenings of Lent Prayer us. It was in and out of mass, not stopping to say & Reflection hello to anyone. March 16 Charismatic Praise & Worship led by El Shaddai Ministry Things changed for us when Fr. Tony came to St. March 23 Stewardship & G.R.A.C.E. Lorenzo Ruiz in 2005. At that time, I had the Program opportunity to volunteer in the Parish Office at the Front Desk. It started with just a couple of hours 2 or March 30 Character of Lent: Prayer, Fasting & 3 times a week, then it progressed on to half a day sharing to come back to the Father and at times a full day when the staff need extra help. I learned a lot while volunteering in the office and found it very fulfilling. I also met a lot of wonderful people (the staff, other volunteers and We thank our 2019 Lenten parishioners). I have been helping out since then and love it. Committee Members: My husband and I wanted to belong to a community and found it in SLR. We met and Ron & Amy Milo - Lead Coordinators gained spiritually filled friends. Fr. Tony opened our eyes to value the meaning of the Eucharist and Prit & Josie Singh listen to the words of God in the mass. I vividly Laura Estrada remember one Sunday (still in the old church) Wid & Nova Gunawan when Fr. Tony saw us just arriving when the priest Paul & Emily Acuna was already doing his homily and he made a Mark & Herliza Madarang comment about coming in too early for the next Paul & Christina Triguero mass. Eleanore Llonora (continued on page 9) ARCHDIOCESE NEWS From our Community at St. Lorenzo… Our congratulations, best wishes and prayers to our new Auxiliary Bishop– Msgr. Alejandro ‘Alex’ Aclan May you be so fruitful in your ministry of shepherding us ‘remembering and reimagining’ our vision and mission of ‘becoming and being’ a ‘local church’ of Los Angeles ‘where earth meets heaven’ at the very heart of our multi-ethnic community. On March 5, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had tapped the 68-year-old priest to become the newest auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, where Msgr. Aclan has served as a priest for 25 years. Aclan’s nomination makes him the second Filipino-American priest to be named bishop in the U.S. Pope Francis also this morning appointed one of our auxiliary bishops, Bishop Joseph Brennan, to be the new bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, California, our neighbor to the northeast. I want to congratulate Bishop Brennan and to thank him for his ministry for many years here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He has been a great priest and bishop and a good friend. I am going to miss him, and so will the people of the San Fernando Pastoral Region, where he serves as Episcopal Vicar. ——Archbishop José H. Gomez We pray & worship. We are a Priestly community. BIRTHING LUPANG HINIRANG-- GOD’S CHOSEN LAND National Movement for Righteousness and Transformation (N-MRT) Introduction To an increasing number of Filipinos here and abroad, the Philippines is a lost cause. But as Filipino Christians with endless faith in our God, we are duty-bound to ask, despite the hopelessness around us, the following questions: z Can something still be done? z Are we doomed as a nation? z Has God abandoned this country? z Does the Word of God to the prophet Jeremiah still apply to the Philippines today? “For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) 32 1 I. The Destiny of the Philippines Notes C. Three basic attitudes needed as we study our nation’s A. God created each nation with a purpose history z Everything that God created has a purpose, even nations. As we seek to understand God’s purpose for our nation through God created each nation with a purpose. In general, God’s our history, we need to ask God to give us a humble, thankful purpose for every nation is to contribute something positive and repentant heart. to humanity (sangkatauhan), to be a blessing to other nations. • Liberation Unto Freedom
LIBERATION UNTO FREEDOM REFLECTION CONCERNING THE MANDATE OF THE CHURCH - Giancarlo Collet ("Christian faith remains related to Jesus, because in him, the intent and purpose of freedom is made explicit as being unconditional love". ..Giancarlo Collet's article, translated from the original German by Mrs. Antonia Fonseca, examines the mandate of the Church to mediate God's unconditional acceptance of man. She can only do this if she is herself a community of liberated individuals. The copious references have been confined to actual quotations due to limitations of space.Ed1 Introduction Theological reflection concerning freedom, if it is not to miss its point, must start with an analysis of real freedom, i.e. it must be placed in a context of social and political and - last but not least - ecclesiastical freedom or liberation. Even if in this article this analysis itself is not made but rather presupposed, at least its implications will be mentioned. The social conditions where the Church must accomplish her mission in the world can be defined as follows : CONTEXT OF FREEDOM (1) World unity: From the beginning of modern times, the world is on the way to unity. The growing interdependences in the social, political and econaaic spheres as well as in the field of communication technology have brought about an increase in collateral interdependence. Structures and institut- ions have increased their power to a certain extent while, at the same time, the immediate dependence of human beings slides more and more into anonymity. (2) European and American influence: The process of world-unification we are now witnessing occurs under the pressure of circumstances, because the influence-Of-the pattern of European and American ways of life and interests on the non-western world is a threat to other peoples' chances of developing freely and creatively, if they still desire to do so and are not already fascinated with or blinded by western modes of living.

St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Parish Community “Where Earth meets Heaven” Our Mission Statement As a welcoming community, we celebrate our life, conscious of our multi-ethnic traditions, vowing unity with Christ in our multi-cultural differences. We usher in our lives (being evangelized) and proclaim (as evangelizers) the reign of God as Priests, Prophets and Kings, and in so doing, we celebrate our discipleship in Christ Jesus. We extol “being Church” through the formation of Small Faith Communities as a way of life in being priests, prophets and kings; thus, we become economically stable and self-reliant as we give special attention and solicitude to our youth and the needy. “They were faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the common life of sharing, the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42) A message from Fr. • Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz
Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz Introduction What a joy to be with you this afternoon at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen to celebrate the feast day of two Filipino saints: San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calunsgod (kuh LUN sud). Warmest thanks to Dr. Ruben Ballesteros and Father Pete Literal for kindly inviting me to lead and take part in this celebration and in thanking you I extend my gratitude to Archdiocesan Filipino Council for your all that you do to foster the New Evangelization among the growing number of Filipino families here in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. At the same time, I would like to welcome Couples for Christ and to thank you for all that you do to promote the vocation of marriage and family. And let us remember all those who lost their lives in Typhoon Haiyan as well as those who responded so heroically to that tragedy. We salute their faith, their courage, and their heroic love! Universal Call to Holiness The II Vatican Council clearly taught that every one of us is called to holiness. Indeed, something way deep down in us keeps telling us that we are made for more than this world can offer – whether it’s pleasure, riches, or power. We are made in God’s image and so we are really happy only when we reflect God’s love and share his friendship. And holiness is nothing other than sharing in God’s own life and love. In the Church we find all the means to holiness that we need, for in the Church we meet Christ and experience his love.
