Technical Brief Electrically-Compatible PV Modules Updated 12/30/11 The photovoltaic (PV) modules on this list have been verified for electrical compatibility with Enphase Microinverters over the cell temperature range of -25C to +75C. This document is intended as a means of reference and is not an exhaustive list of compatible modules. For applications outside of this temperature range, the system designer should verify that the module voltage and/or current would not exceed the microinverter model's nameplate ratings under all expected environmental conditions. The module specification sheet contains all of the necessary module information to make this determination. The ASHRAE Handbook (www.ashrae.org) is the recommended source for weather data. Electrical versus Mechanical Compatibility The modules on this list are not verified for mechanical compatibility with Enphase Microinverters. To ensure mechanical compatibility, be sure to order the correct connector type for both microinverter and PV module from your distributor. CAUTION regarding Mechanical Compatibility of DC Connectors: Be aware that inclusion on this list indicates electrical compatibility, but does not guarantee mechanical compatibility of the PV module connectors. Be sure to order the correct connector type for both microinverter and PV module from your distributor. Enphase Microinverters must be ordered for specific module connector types. Microinverters are manufactured with two types of DC connectors for mating with PV modules. These are MC-4 and Tyco connectors. The polarity of the DC connectors on the microinverter varies with the type of connector: • When your microinverters are built with MC-4 compatible (S12/S22) connectors: The positive DC output of the PV module (+) connects to the microinverter connector labeled negative (-). • When your microinverters are built with Tyco (S13/S23) connectors: The positive DC output of the PV module (+) connects to the microinverter connector labeled positive (+). However, Tyco connectors can vary in polarity. With Tyco connectors either the male or female connector may be positive, but only the MALE positive will mate with Enphase Microinverters with S13/S23 connectors. Be sure to order the correct connector type for both microinverter and PV module from your distributor. As a rule, the electrically-positive output of the PV module always connects to the positive input of the microinverter. However, PV modules come with a variety of labels. For more information, refer to “Mating Microinverters with PV Modules for Correct Polarity” under the Enphase downloads at http://www.enphase.com/support/downloads. During installation, the status LED of each microinverter emits six green blinks one to two minutes after DC power is applied. This verifies normal operation and correct polarity of connections. Determining Appropriate Module Size The appropriate module power rating for a given application depends on the specifics of that installation. The “Module Rightsizing” white paper (see “Whitepapers” under the Enphase downloads at http://www.enphase.com/support/downloads) outlines the specific factors considered when determining optimum module power rating. A generally accepted practice is to use a module with an STC power rating of 1.2 times the AC power output rating of the inverter. Many system designers use a multiplier of 1.25 or 1.3. For an M190 Microinverter, this would suggest a module power rating of 228W to 250W (STC). The M215 can be paired with modules to 265W (STC). Electrically-Compatible PV Modules The following table lists PV modules that are electrically compatible with Enphase Microinverters. Columns one and two list the brand and model for each PV module. Column three lists the Enphase Microinverter models that can be paired with that PV module. Warning: The Enphase M215 Microinverter works ONLY with 60-cell modules. Damage can occur if the M215 is connected to a 72-cell module. In the list below, any 72-cell modules listed are shown as compatible only with other Enphase Microinverter models.
