Aung San Suu Kyi (1945 - ) Major Events in the Life of a Revolutionary Leader All terms appearing in bold are included in the glossary. 1945 On June 19 in Rangoon (now called Yangon), the capital city of Burma (now called Myanmar), Aung San Suu Kyi was born the third child and only daughter to Aung San, national hero and leader of the Burma Independence Army (BIA) and the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL), and Daw Khin Kyi, a nurse at Rangoon General Hospital. Aung San Suu Kyi was born into a country with a complex history of colonial domination that began late in the nineteenth century. After a series of wars between Burma and Great Britain, Burma was conquered by the British and annexed to British India in 1885. At first, the Burmese were afforded few rights and given no political autonomy under the British, but by 1923 Burmese nationals were permitted to hold select government offices. In 1935, the British separated Burma from India, giving the country its own constitution, an elected assembly of Burmese nationals, and some measure of self-governance. In 1941, expansionist ambitions led the Japanese to invade Burma, where they defeated the British and overthrew their colonial administration. While at first the Japanese were welcomed as liberators, under their rule more oppressive policies were instituted than under the British, precipitating resistance from Burmese nationalist groups like the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL). In 1945, Allied forces drove the Japanese out of Burma and Britain resumed control over the country. 1947 Aung San negotiated the full independence of Burma from British control. -

Hidden Casualties: Burma, Siam (Thailand), and the Philippines in World War Two History and Film Rick Derrah ABSTRACT This paper examines the World War Two in Burma, Siam (Thailand), and the Philippines and the reflection of .that history within films produced during the same time period. War films were produced all three of these countries during the war period, but, in general, focus almost exclusively on American or British characters as the heroes. There is also very little content dealing with the casualties suffered by the indigenous populations of these countries during the war. Keywords: History; World War Two; Film INTRODUCTION In society popular culture often shapes the perception of the past. These views of the past are sometimes adjusted to make the story more appealing to the projected audience and with the advent of movies this phenomenon has only accelerated. Theses views build upon and reinforce each other creating constructs which are widely known. Movies are often able to create their own reality by building on these common constructs. The view of the movie becomes the reality for many people and this is problematic because movies and other forms of popular culture are created with agendas beyond simply telling a story. These hidden agendas can be simply the story the version of the story the creator wishes to express or even the motivation to make the work profitable. -

World Directory of Minorities Asia and Oceania MRG Directory –> Myanmar/Burma –> Karen Print Page Close Window Karen Profile The term ‘Karen’ actually refers to a number of ethnic groups with Tibetan-Central Asian origins who speak 12 related but mutually unintelligible languages (‘Karenic languages’) that are part of the Tibeto- Burman group of the Sino-Tibetan family. Around 85 per cent of Karen belong either to the S’ghaw language branch, and are mostly Christian and animist living in the hills, or the Pwo section and are mostly Buddhists. The vast majority of Karen are Buddhists (probably over two-thirds), although large numbers converted to Christianity during British rule and are thought to constitute about 30 per cent among the Karen. The group encompasses a great variety of ethnic groups, such as the Karenni, Padaung (also known by some as ‘long-necks’ because of the brass coils worn by women that appear to result in the elongation of their necks), Bghai, Brek, etc. There are no reliable population figures available regarding their total numbers in Burma: a US State Department estimate for 2007 suggests there may be over 3.2 million living in the eastern border region of the country, especially in Karen State, Tenasserim Division, eastern Pegu Division, Mon State and the Irrawaddy Division. Historical context While there is some uncertainty as to the origins of the various Karen peoples, it is thought that their migration may have occurred after the arrival of the Mon – who are thought to have established themselves in the region before the start of the first millennium BCE – but before that of the Burmans sometime before the ninth century. -

Working paper Building on what’s there Insights on social protection and public goods provision from central-east Myanmar Gerard McCarthy September 2016 When citing this paper, please use the title and the following reference number: S-53308-MYA-2 Gerard McCarthy Building on What’s There: Insights on social assistance, public goods and taxation from central-east Myanmar Section 1: Introduction After decades of military rule in Myanmar, the political and economic transitions that are now underway are already impacting on the provision of social protection services and public goods at the local level.1 The progress made towards reaching cease-fires with armed groups around the country has allowed for expansion of the Myanmar government apparatus and services in some of these areas. Government expenditures on health, education, and to a lesser extent social welfare and rural development have increased substantially since 20092. Specific groups of individuals such as pregnant mothers and the elderly are now receiving assistance including direct cash transfers from state ministries, largely financed by international donors. 3 In addition, a National Social Protection Strategy is now in place. Moreover the newly elected National League for Democracy (NLD) government are planning to expand state- provided welfare, social services and other public goods.4 These are all positive developments. Often ignored in attempts to support livelihoods through state-mediated welfare initiatives, however, is Myanmar’s extensive economy of non-state welfare and public goods provisioning. Developed over decades of military rule, often with the direct encouragement of the regime itself, there are 100,000s of localized mechanisms of risk-sharing and social protection operating across Myanmar.5 However, little is known about the relative importance of these networks for households when compared to government support; the extent of the fiscal burden that falls on households; and households’ opinions on this system of care. -
