The UK is the world leader in offshore wind. We have more offshore wind installed than anywhere else in the world. We are an island nation, blessed with strong winds and shallow seas – and this energy resource is on our doorstep. We are determined to move to cleaner electricity generation and offshore wind has an important role to play in our long term plan for a balanced, low carbon energy mix. I want the UK to secure the economic benefits of this new industry. Through our offshore wind industrial strategy, the Government is committed to working in partnership with business to build a competitive, innovative UK supply chain for offshore wind, delivering jobs and economic growth. Building a strong supply chain needs the commitment and expertise of local partners, working alongside central government to support businesses who want to invest here. The Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE) partnership offers an integrated and cooperative approach between Government and Local Enterprise Partnerships in England, to provide the best possible support to businesses choosing England as an investment location. The Rt Hon Matthew Hancock MP Minister of State for Business, Enterprise and Energy CORE brings together the relevant expertise from UK Central Government and the six major investment hubs in England to support business growth and showcase opportunities for foreign direct investment (FDI) for the offshore wind sector. -

News Release 14 March 2012 Siemens awards multi-million tower contract to South Wales firm Fifteen towers destined for Mynydd y Betws wind farm project as Mabey Bridge is awarded first contract by the UK’s largest provider of wind turbines Siemens, the leading global engineering and technology company, has announced that it has placed an order with South Wales based Mabey Bridge to manufacture towers for 15, 2.3MW turbines bound for the Mynydd y Betws wind farm in Carmarthenshire. Siemens will supply, transport, install and commission the two-section 63-metre- high, 105 tonne towers for local developer, Cambrian Renewable Energy Limited (CREL), owned by the ESB, Ireland’s main electricity utility company. The wind turbines will have a tip height of 110 metres, and an installed capacity of up to 34.5MW. The project will generate electricity to power approximately 18,250 households, equivalent to almost a quarter of Carmarthenshire. More than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions will be saved over the lifetime of the project. The towers will be delivered in summer 2012 and the project is due for completion by February 2013. Originally developed by CREL, a Welsh consortium of Eco2 and local investors, Mynydd y Betws Wind Farm was acquired in June 2010 by ESB. ESB is committed to halving its carbon emissions by 2020 and achieving carbon net-zero emissions Page 1 of 3 by 2035. In addition to Mynydd y Betws, other projects include the Fullabrook Wind Farm in Devon and the West Durham Wind Farm. Commenting on the Mynydd y Betws Wind Farm project a spokesperson from ESB said: "ESB is committed to realising benefits for local communities by developing new green energy sources. -

Also the "CEGB story' booklet is up on an AboutBlyth site and Glyn England's musings from 1982 (view from my Window) are on a South Western historical electricity site. Plus the main Electricity timeline document produced by the Electricity Council in 1987, Rob Cochrane's book Power to the People and various other sources. Looking at the current difficult situation we appear to be in, I've been digging around how Electricity delivery has progressed in GB. I thought you find this interesting..... There is a salutory lesson re excess capacity which really held us back until 1933, albeit at that time also with serious supply type diversity. Following on from Michael Faraday’s experiments, James Clerk Maxwell wrote his treatise on Electricity and Magnetism which was a bit hard to follow. However John Ambrose Fleming, the one student who sat through all of Clerk Maxwell’s lectures realised what was needed and came up with the Right Hand (Generation) and Left hand (Motor) rules. Motion at Right angles to Magnetic field with Electric field at 90 degrees to both. Hence the development of Dynamos (DC), Alternators (AC) and Motors (DC and AC) Much new Electricity Generation and Supply equipment was on show at the 1881 Paris Electrical Exposition and 1882 Crystal Palace Exhibition. Edison had by far the largest exhibit in Paris (including 'Jumbo' the 125hp monster generator). Edison and Swan displayed the new incandescent lamp. This engendered a number of projects which really kick started the Electricity revolution. -

The plant has three furnace lines with a combined processing capacity of 375,000 tonnes per annum. The heat produced by waste incineration is used to raise superheated steam which is harnessed to turn a single-cylinder turbine linked to an electricity generator producing 29 MWh of electricity.
