Wind power is an integral part of the UK Government’s climate change initiative; with the recognition that offshore wind power in particular has the potential to generate a significant amount of the energy needed by the UK itself in coming years. The London Array project forms part of a 7 gigawatt series of projects in the UK, which when complete will provide the energy equivalent to the needs of 7% of the UK¥. Supplying coatings to the London Array is the latest step in AkzoNobel’s experience in the offshore wind power market. Press Release 4 July 2013 Prime Minister David Cameron inaugurates world’s largest offshore wind farm 630MW London Array powering half a million UK homes DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar today, (4 July 2013) officially opened the world’s largest offshore wind farm, London Array, at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister David Cameron, alongside other dignitaries. Over 350 people attended the inauguration at Turner Contemporary in Margate, Kent. London Array, the 630MW offshore wind farm located in the Outer Thames Estuary, first started generating power in October 2012. The 175th turbine was bought online in March 2013 and London Array is now celebrating the completion and full operation of the site, which could supply around 500,000 UK homes with electricity each year. Construction began in July 2009 when work started to build a new onshore substation on the north Kent coast to flow the energy generated by London Array straight into the national grid. Offshore the first foundation was installed in March 2011; the 175th and final Siemens 3.6MW turbine was installed on time in December 2012. Over 75 organisations have helped to build London Array with over 6,700 individuals involved. Speaking at the launch event, Prime Minister, David Cameron said: "This is a great day for Kent and a great day for Britain. London Array has been built by some of the bravest seamen, the most talented engineers and hardest workers. News Release 14 March 2012 Siemens awards multi-million tower contract to South Wales firm Fifteen towers destined for Mynydd y Betws wind farm project as Mabey Bridge is awarded first contract by the UK’s largest provider of wind turbines Siemens, the leading global engineering and technology company, has announced that it has placed an order with South Wales based Mabey Bridge to manufacture towers for 15, 2.3MW turbines bound for the Mynydd y Betws wind farm in Carmarthenshire. Siemens will supply, transport, install and commission the two-section 63-metre- high, 105 tonne towers for local developer, Cambrian Renewable Energy Limited (CREL), owned by the ESB, Ireland’s main electricity utility company. The wind turbines will have a tip height of 110 metres, and an installed capacity of up to 34.5MW. The project will generate electricity to power approximately 18,250 households, equivalent to almost a quarter of Carmarthenshire. More than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions will be saved over the lifetime of the project. The towers will be delivered in summer 2012 and the project is due for completion by February 2013. Originally developed by CREL, a Welsh consortium of Eco2 and local investors, Mynydd y Betws Wind Farm was acquired in June 2010 by ESB. ESB is committed to halving its carbon emissions by 2020 and achieving carbon net-zero emissions Page 1 of 3 by 2035. In addition to Mynydd y Betws, other projects include the Fullabrook Wind Farm in Devon and the West Durham Wind Farm. Commenting on the Mynydd y Betws Wind Farm project a spokesperson from ESB said: "ESB is committed to realising benefits for local communities by developing new green energy sources.
