The guiding Principles the Government should prioritise are: a) Prioritising investment in zero-carbon opportunities for a green recovery to create green jobs, address climate change, and tackle inequality. b) Ambitious environmental and decarbonisation targets with a long-term national strategy and roadmap to outline how these targets and steps will be achieved, encourage investment and enable the skills development required to meet the ambitions. c) All such targets and plans must adhere to the principles of a socially and regionally inclusive transition. A recovery which has social and environmental justice at its core. Priorities should therefore acknowledge and directly address energy poverty, social inequality and disparities in employment opportunity in our society exposed by Covid-19. d) Prioritising region-based clusters as engines of growth and sustainable innovation pipelines. This is an excellent opportunity to for levelling-up and addressing the UK north/south divide by recognising the wealth of resources, expertise, enthusiasm and ready workforce available in the North for a green recovery. -

Much inclosure of Common Land, Open Fields and Moor Land (or Waste), formerly farmed collectively by the residents on behalf of the Lord of the Manor, had taken place by the 18th century, but the uplands of County Durham remained largely unenclosed. Inclosures, to consolidate land-holdings, divide the land (into Allotments) and fence it off from other usage, could be made under a Private Act of Parliament or by general agreement of the landowners concerned. In the latter case the Agreement would be Enrolled as a Decree at the Court of Chancery in Durham and/or lodged with the Clerk of the Peace, the senior government officer in the County, so may be preserved in Quarter Sessions records. In the case of Parliamentary Enclosure a Local Bill would be put before Parliament which would pass it into law as an Inclosure Act. The Acts appointed Commissioners to survey the area concerned and determine its distribution as a published Inclosure Award. -

This fault zone has been proposed as a source of deep geothermal energy; to facilitate the design of a geothermal project in the town of Bishop Auckland further investigation of its geometry was necessary and led to the present study. We show using three-dimensional modelling of a dense local gravity survey, combined with structural inversion, that this fault has a ramp-flat-ramp geometry, ~250 m of latest Carboniferous / Early Permian downthrow having occurred on a fault surface that is not a planar updip continuation of that which had accommodated the many kilometres of Dinantian extension. The gravity survey also reveals relatively low-density sediments in the hanging-wall of the Dinantian fault, interpreted as porous alluvial fan deposits, indicating that a favourable geothermal target indeed exists in the area. -

OBITUARY NOTICE PROFESSOR JOHN WILLIAM HESLOP HARRISON, D.SC., F.R.S., F.R.S.E. On January 23rd 1967, Professor J. W. Heslop Harrison passed away at the age of 86, at his home in Birtley. After graduating at Armstrong College, University of Durham in 1903, he became a science master at Middlesbrough High School. During these school- teaching years, he carried on with his researches in his spare time. It was not long before his abilities in field studies, in both plants and insects, became widely known. It is not surprising, therefore, to find him returning to the University as a lecturer in zoology in 1919. His subsequent rise to fame was phenomenal. In 1926 he was appointed to a personal Readership in Genetics, the only one there has ever been at Newcastle. In 1927 he was appointed to the Chair of Botany, then in the very next year he gained his greatest distinction by becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society. During all this time and indeed until only a few years ago, research papers flowed from his pen at an unbelievable rate. His name must have appeared in every journal of biological subjects at one time or another. In addition, it must be remembered that he was one of the four founder editors of the "Vasculum" in 1915, one of the founder members of the Wallis Club in 1922, one of the founder members of the Northern Naturalists' Union in 1924 and the first Vice-President of the Naturalists' Trust of Northumberland and Durham. -

Teesdale Local Plan – Adopted June 2002 CHAPTER 5 POPULATION & HOUSING Teesdale Local Plan – Adopted June 2002 5) POPULATION & HOUSING 5.0 INTRODUCTION 5.0.1 The projected population of the district is inextricably linked to the District’s future housing requirements. The maintenance of a stable population is a realistic goal for the next ten years. Due to the ageing demographic structure of the district, in–migration would be required to achieve this goal. 5.1 POPULATION PROJECTIONS & HOUSING REQUIREMENTS 5.1.1 The housing requirements of the plan are calculated on the basis of Durham County Structure Plan Policy. Policy 7 of the Structure Plan states that Teesdale will require about 1,000 more dwellings between 1991 – 2006. As this Plan extends to 2010 the housing requirement calculation will need to make an estimate for the building requirement between 2006 and 2010. This is achieved by taking the Structure Plan figure, converting that to an annual building rate and thereby providing an estimate for the period 2006-2010. The housing requirement will also need to take into account those dwellings completed between 1991 – 1998. 5.1.2 According to the published 1991 census figures the Population of Teesdale is 24,068 of which 306 are in communal establishments, Population projections based on 1997 estimates show the population is expected to increase slightly to 24,193 by 2010, with the number of persons in communal establishments expected to remain constant, this would lead to 23,887 requiring housing. 5.1.3 As previously mentioned above, latest projections show a slight increase in population added to that the reduction in the average household size would result in the need for additional dwellings. -

The coastal slopes and grasslands are home to a fabulous array of wild flowers and insects, in contrast the wooded coastal denes are a mysterious landscape of tangled trees, roe deer and woodland birds. This guide shows a small selection of some the fascinating features and wildlife you may see on your visit to our coast; from Hendon in the north to Hartlepool Headland in the south, there is always something interesting to see, whatever the time of year. In the autumn and spring lots of different types of passage migrant birds can be seen. The UK's birds can be split in to three categories of conservation importance - red, amber and green. Red is the highest conservation priority, with species needing urgent action. Amber is the next most critical group, followed by green. The colour is shown next to the image. Please keep your dogs on a lead to avoid disturbance to ground nesting birds in the summer and also over wintering birds. -

Sedgefield Borough Local Plan Page 1 ENVIRONMENT The Borough consists of distinctive landscape areas that together create its particular character and provide the setting for the built environment of the various towns and villages. Most of the towns and villages in the Borough developed rapidly in response to growth in industry and coal mining over the last 100 years and contain relics of the industrial past; some show evidence of their agricultural origins. Parts of twelve towns and villages are designated conservation areas. There are over 170 listed buildings of architectural or historic interest. The built environment provides the background to where people live, work and spend much of their leisure time and helps to create the identity of different places. The natural environment consists primarily of the countryside between and around settlements but also areas of open space within towns and villages. The countryside is mainly in agricultural use but is also a valuable resource for recreation, leisure and wildlife. The open spaces within settlements are of value for a variety of uses and provide an attractive setting to built development. Within the countryside there are areas recognised for their special quality and interest. There are four areas of historic landscape, three of which are designated as conservation areas, seven Sites of Special Scientific Interest and four scheduled ancient monuments. The landscape is varied and is divided into four characteristic areas: the Magnesian Limestone escarpment, the River Wear Valley Shelf, and River Wear Valley Area of Landscape Value, and the Southern and Eastern Lowlands. The Borough is fortunate in that there is little derelict land remaining from its industrial past. -

Popular political oratory and itinerant lecturing in Yorkshire and the North East in the age of Chartism, 1837-60 Janette Lisa Martin This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of York Department of History January 2010 ABSTRACT Itinerant lecturers declaiming upon free trade, Chartism, temperance, or anti- slavery could be heard in market places and halls across the country during the years 1837- 60. The power of the spoken word was such that all major pressure groups employed lecturers and sent them on extensive tours. Print historians tend to overplay the importance of newspapers and tracts in disseminating political ideas and forming public opinion. This thesis demonstrates the importance of older, traditional forms of communication. Inert printed pages were no match for charismatic oratory. Combining personal magnetism, drama and immediacy, the itinerant lecturer was the most effective medium through which to reach those with limited access to books, newspapers or national political culture. Orators crucially united their dispersed audiences in national struggles for reform, fomenting discussion and coalescing political opinion, while railways, the telegraph and expanding press reportage allowed speakers and their arguments to circulate rapidly. Understanding of political oratory and public meetings has been skewed by over- emphasis upon the hustings and high-profile politicians. This has generated two misconceptions: that political meetings were generally rowdy and that a golden age of political oratory was secured only through Gladstone’s legendary stumping tours. However, this thesis argues that, far from being disorderly, public meetings were carefully regulated and controlled offering disenfranchised males a genuine democratic space for political discussion.
