It's only rock & roll | Pep Saña | Actualitzat el 30/03/2016 a les 16:52 Thunder: L'última gran banda de Hard Rock Británic. Luke Morley i Danny Bowes es van conèixer al Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School al 1975. A l'edat de 14 anys Danny va entrar a la banda que Luke havia format amb altres nois, al no poder tocar un instrument va decidir cantar, el grup li va fer una audició i va ser considerat apte per ocupar aquest lloc. El noi al que substituïa va ser relegat al baix, convertint-se amb els anys en el manager de Thunder. La banda s'anomenava Nuthin' Fancy, en els anys següents van tocar a pubs del voltant de l'àrea de Londres i van editar un single independent, Looking For A Good Time. Quan Harry James s'hi va unir, després de marxar l'anterior bateria, la banda va passar a anomenar-se Terraplane. Ja com Terraplane van fer moltes actuacions, incloent el famós Marquee Club i una aparició al Festival de Reading de 1982. Van signar per Epic Records i van editar dos àlbums, però es van sentir molt frustrats per l'orientació pop en què la companyia els estava venent. Després d'un viatge als Estats Units es van adonar que hi havia una escena de rock vibrant, van tenir clar que hi havia un lloc per al tipus de música que volien fer i van tornar a Anglaterra per formar Thunder, amb clares connotacions i regust pels clàssics del rock britànic com Free i Bad Company. Els tres amics que ja havien compartit grup anteriorment (Terraplane) van formar la primera versió de Thunder: Luke Morley, guitarra i principal compositor, Danny Bowes, cantant, i Harry James, bateria. Aviat se'ls va unir Ben Mathews com a segon guitarra i teclista i Snake al baix. Aquesta fulgurant progressió es va materialitzar gràcies a un magnífic àlbum debut titulat Backstreet Symphony (1989). Grans temes com She's So Fine, Dirty Love, Love Walked In, el tema que dona títol a l'àlbum, Backstreet Symphony o la versió Gimme Some Lovin' (Spencer Davis Group) els van posar de moda. La companyia EMI va editar cinc singles en els dos anys següents i la banda es va afartar d'actuar amb el més granat del hard rock del moment (Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, David Lee Roth, Tesla). Les vendes es van disparar al Regne Unit (número 2 a les llistes) i Japó però es van estancar en la resta, especialment als Estats Units on el hard rock havia passat a millor vida, l'escena grunge començava a canviar el paisatge del rock. Aquest període va ser el més turbulent a la carrera de la banda, Snake va deixar el grup després de la gira i va ser substituït pel baixista suec Mikael Höglund. Mentrestant, van créixer els rumors que David Coverdale intentava fitxar per Whitesnake a Luke Morley (al 2002 Danny Bowes va declarar que tot això va ser maquillat per la banda per aixecar algun interès a la premsa). No obstant això, el grup no es va desanimar, van apostar fort pels seus nous temes i van tornar a girar sense parar, presentant cançons de la talla de Everybody Wants Her, Low Life In High Places, A Better Man o Flawed To Perfection. Behind Closed Doors va aparèixer al gener de 1995. Amb el nou baixista, Mikael Höglund, i la producció de Mike Fraser, el grup va mantenir la seva línia sonora i va fabricar hits com Stand Up, River Of Pain, Moth To The Flame o ?Til The Rivers Run Dry. Encara que seguien venent bé al Regne Unit i Japó (va arribar al número 5 i a disc d'or), EMI els va despatxar i van haver de buscar-se nova companyia. D'una banda, els següents dos àlbums van haver de publicar- los amb dues companyies menors que no van apostar fort per ells, The Thrill Of It All amb Castle Music (1997) i Giving The Game Away amb Eagle Rock (1999). Per un altre, la banda no creixia, es va quedar estancada en els mateixos fans, els mateixos concerts, les mateixes perspectives. En l'era pre internet, si una companyia no posava diners, els mitjans es tancaven i un podia acabar en un carreró sense sortida. El grup va decidir donar-se un descans. Van tornar al 2002 per un concert com a estrelles convidades en un altre Monster Of Rock, i el bon acolliment els va animar a continuar. Un any després fundaven la seva pròpia companyia STC Records, on han editat els seus següents treballs. La veritat és que està ple de bons temes, i es un excel·lent disc, on es troba rock'n'roll melòdic de perfecta factura, amb tocs a grups clàssics com Led Zeppelin o AC/DC i en la majoria dels temes, amb bon rock'n'roll d'aquell que t'atrapa al moment. Això portat a la seva màxima expressió és el que ofereix Robert Johnson's Tombstone, un treball en el qual, encara que aparegui el nom de la llegenda del delta en el seu títol, no és ni més ni menys blues que els anteriors, es respira ROCK (amb majúscules) del bo per cadascun dels 11 temes que el composen. Des del tema homònim que obre l'àlbum, el so gros i dens de les guitarres Les Paul hi es present (no hi ha millor ?arma? per a aquest invent anomenat rock). Com els seus grans discos del passat, aquesta formula d'enregistrament torna a funcionar i la banda firma aquí una dotzena de temes de gran qualitat, rememorant velles èpoques amb talls moderns però amb aura de clàssics, es nota ràpidament aquesta barreja entre el blues rock de vells temps, amb un toc de rock'n'roll actual. Seguiran sent ignorats, seguiran sent poc reconeguts, però segueixen sent genials, sens dubte. Thunder, l'ultima gran banda que ha donat el hard rock britànic en les últimes dècades, van decidir tirar la tovallola allà per l'estiu de 2009, cosa que van anunciar a primers d'aquell any a la seva pagina web.

Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

    SAIICHI SUGIYAMA BAND EPK (July 2016) British blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in September 2016 ahead of their new album release next year. Saiichi Sugiyama Band is a group of musicians hailing from Surrey/London that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, brought together in 2010 by the guitarist/composer Saiichi [pronounced: “sigh-eee- chee”], who has a career spanning 25 years as a solo artist in the British blues scene. The core of the group is Rietta Austin (lead vocals), Saiichi Sugiyama (guitar/vocals/composer), Ben Reed (bass guitar) and Mune Sugiyama (producer/arranger/drums). When playing live, the group are augmented by touring musicians including Stuart Dixon (rhythm guitar), Katrin Yr (lead vocals) and Wez Johnson (drums). The former members Lizzie Hibbert (lead vocals) and Dave Munch Moore (keys) also record with the group in studio. The group has been spending the past months working on their new studio album in various recording studios, a follow up to the studio live album “the Smokehouse Sessions” from 2014. The new album will include a track entitled “Melting Away”, written by Saiichi and featuring the late bass hero Andy Fraser, ex-Free and composer of the 1970 smash single, “All Right Now.” The initial inspiration for “Melting Away” came to Saiichi while on a trip to his native Japan. To Saiichi the melody was reminiscent of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who died in 1976. Creating a demo when he returned home to the UK, Saiichi came up with bass parts that brought Free bassman Andy Fraser to mind.

    This exhibition is part of the Barbican’s Season Dancing around Duchamp Geoffrey Farmer The Surgeon and the Photographer The Curve, Barbican Centre, London UK 26 March – 28 July 2013 Media View, Monday 25 March, 10am – 1pm Supported by Arts Council England. Shown for the first time in its completed form, Geoffrey Farmer presents The Surgeon and the Photographer for his first major exhibition in a UK public gallery. Constructing 365 handpuppets from book images clipped and glued to fabric forms, Farmer will populate The Curve with this recently completed puppet calendar. In 2009, on rumour that a well known second-hand book store in Vancouver would soon be closing, Farmer acquired several hundred books, which he used to create the collaged forms. The figures are arranged in small and large groups, suggesting crowds or processions, portraits of days and months through the 90-metre long space. The Surgeon and the Photographer opens in The Curve on 26 March 2013 . Geoffrey Farmer said: The bookstore in Vancouver resembles a ruin. It is lawless, a labyrinth of book piles and collapsing pyramids. One day while flipping through a book there I had a simple thought about its relationship to my hand. I thought perhaps this relationship might also apply to the images it contained. That is when I started to construct the hand puppets. At the end of the gallery, Farmer projects a newly commissioned, computer-controlled montage, Look in my Face; my name is Might-have-been; I am also called No-more, Toolate, Farewell…. The montage is comprised of selected whole images, before being cut to construct the figures.

Their debut album, the self-titled Daughtry, was the top-selling album of 2007, and was the fastest-selling rock debut album in Soundscan history. It was also nominated for 4 Grammy Awards and won 4 American Music Awards and 7 Billboard Music Awards, including Album of the Year. The subsequent albums, Leave This Town (2009), Break The Spell (2011), and Baptized (2013) have all gone Platinum, with Cage To Rattle (2018) certified Gold. Labels entering into 360 deals may find themselves liablefor violating the Seven-Year Statute or the Talent Agencies Act (TAA). With 360 agreements becoming more popular, labels should turn to an existing music industry that has dealt with the potentiallegal problems of 360 dealsfor years. The Korean pop industry, commonly called "K-pop, " has taken advantage of a 360-deal-like model for many years, and as a conse- quence, many Korean labels have experienced the potential legal prob- lems that American labels may face. Particularly,the legal problems faced by S.M Entertainment, a talent agency and music label giant in South Korea, as a result of their contract with TVXQ, a popular and hugely successful boy band,reveal exactly the type ofpotential liability faced by American music labels.
