Autumn/Winter Programme 2019 Autumn/Winter LET US ENTERTAIN YOU AUTUMN/WINTER AUTUMN/WINTERPROGRAMME PROGRAMME 2019 2019 www.thebrewhouse.net WWW.THEBREWHOUSE.NET WELCOME It is hard to contemplate winter as I write amidst a tropical Somerset summer but as the first Strictly Come Dancing contestants are announced, you know the count-down to Christmas has begun. As has ours: preparations for our main house production of The Railway Children steam along with The Snow Dragon and Christmas Tales with Granddad creating a perfect mix of seasonal treats. Beforehand there is a fantastic autumn line-up in store including one of my all-time favourite choreographers, Russell Maliphant. You can also spend an evening with Lesley Garrett, who I had the pleasure of working with at the Royal Opera House, many years ago. There will be plenty of laughs with Jack Dee, Mark Watson, Boycie and award-winning author Gill Sims. The music of legends Carole King, Buddy Holly, Blondie and Phil Collins will lift your spirits, alongside our much-loved local celebrities Cleverly Everly and Clare Teal. Expect exemplary performances from the European Union Chamber Orchestra and Ballet Cymru’s dancers in Romeo a Juliet. There are numerous live broadcasts to sample, such as NT Live: One Man Two Guvnors, 42nd Street, ROH Live: Don Giovanni, Emma Rice’s production Wise Children, Billy Connolly and Margaret Atwood in conversation. Kids will love the West End’s production of The Tiger who Came to Tea, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and I Believe in Unicorns. As the nights close in, come in from the cold and receive a warm welcome at The Brewhouse as we have plenty to keep you entertained this season. Indeed it can be summarized in one diagram: figure 1.1. Before 1800 income per person – the food, clothing, heat, light, housing, and furnishings available per head - varied across socie- ties and epochs. But there was no upward trend. A simple but powerful mechanism explained in this book, the Malthusian Trap, kept incomes within a range narrow by modern standards.

By being in the audience, you are not only supporting the visiting artists who have brought their work to Nashville for this rare occasion, you are also supporting the growth of contemporary art in this region. We thank you for your continued support. We are exceptionally lucky and very proud to have with us this evening, one of the worlds’ most inspiring choreographic minds, Wayne McGregor. An artist who emphasizes collaboration and a wide range of perspectives in his creative process, McGregor brings his own brilliant intellect and painterly vision to life in each of his works. In FAR, we witness the mind and body as interconnected forces; distorted and sensual within the same frame. As ten stunning dancers hyperextend and crouch, rapidly moving through light and shadow to a mesmerizing score, the relationship between imagination and movement becomes each viewer’s own interpretation. An acronym for Flesh in the Age of Reason, McGregor’s FAR investigates self-understanding and exemplifies the theme from Roy Porter’s novel by the same name, “that we outlive our mortal existence most enduringly in the ideas we leave behind.” Strap in.

  • Saiichi Sugiyama Band Epk 2016
SAIICHI SUGIYAMA BAND EPK (July 2016) British blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in September 2016 ahead of their new album release next year. Saiichi Sugiyama Band is a group of musicians hailing from Surrey/London that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, brought together in 2010 by the guitarist/composer Saiichi [pronounced: “sigh-eee- chee”], who has a career spanning 25 years as a solo artist in the British blues scene. The core of the group is Rietta Austin (lead vocals), Saiichi Sugiyama (guitar/vocals/composer), Ben Reed (bass guitar) and Mune Sugiyama (producer/arranger/drums). When playing live, the group are augmented by touring musicians including Stuart Dixon (rhythm guitar), Katrin Yr (lead vocals) and Wez Johnson (drums). The former members Lizzie Hibbert (lead vocals) and Dave Munch Moore (keys) also record with the group in studio. The group has been spending the past months working on their new studio album in various recording studios, a follow up to the studio live album “the Smokehouse Sessions” from 2014. The new album will include a track entitled “Melting Away”, written by Saiichi and featuring the late bass hero Andy Fraser, ex-Free and composer of the 1970 smash single, “All Right Now.” The initial inspiration for “Melting Away” came to Saiichi while on a trip to his native Japan. To Saiichi the melody was reminiscent of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who died in 1976. Creating a demo when he returned home to the UK, Saiichi came up with bass parts that brought Free bassman Andy Fraser to mind.

“Whiskey in the Jar”: History and Transformation of a Classic Irish Song Masters Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dana DeVlieger, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2016 Thesis Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. I would also like to thank Johanna Devaney and Anna Gawboy for their valuable insight and ideas for future directions and ways to improve.
