Claes-Göran Holmberg
fLaMMan claes-Göran holmberg Precursors swedish avant-garde groups were very late in founding their own magazines. in france and Germany, little magazines had been pub- lished continuously from the romantic era onwards. a magazine was an ideal platform for the consolidation of a new movement in its formative phase. it was a collective thrust at the heart of the enemy: the older generation, the academies, the traditionalists. By showing a united front (through programmatic declarations, manifestos, es- says etc.) you assured the public that you were to be reckoned with. almost every new artist group or current has tried to create a mag- azine to define and promote itself. the first swedish little magazine to embrace the symbolist and decadent movements of fin-de-siècle europe was Med pensel och penna (With paintbrush and pen, 1904-1905), published in Uppsala by the society of “Les quatres diables”, a group of young poets and students engaged in aestheticism and Baudelaire adulation. Mem- bers were the poet and student in slavic languages sigurd agrell (1881-1937), the student and later professor of art history harald Brising (1881-1918), the student of philosophy and later professor of psychology John Landquist (1881-1974), and the author sven Lidman (1882-1960); the poet sigfrid siwertz (1882-1970) also joined the group later. the magazine did not leave any great impact on swedish literature but it helped to spread the Jugend style of illu- stration, the contemporary love-hate relationship with the city and the celebration of the intoxicating powers of beauty and deca- dence. -
The Racist Legacy in Modern Swedish Saami Policy1
THE RACIST LEGACY IN MODERN SWEDISH SAAMI POLICY1 Roger Kvist Department of Saami Studies Umeå University S-901 87 Umeå Sweden Abstract/Resume The Swedish national state (1548-1846) did not treat the Saami any differently than the population at large. The Swedish nation state (1846- 1971) in practice created a system of institutionalized racism towards the nomadic Saami. Saami organizations managed to force the Swedish welfare state to adopt a policy of ethnic tolerance beginning in 1971. The earlier racist policy, however, left a strong anti-Saami rights legacy among the non-Saami population of the North. The increasing willingness of both the left and the right of Swedish political life to take advantage of this racist legacy, makes it unlikely that Saami self-determination will be realized within the foreseeable future. 204 Roger Kvist Introduction In 1981 the Supreme Court of Sweden stated that the Saami right to reindeer herding, and adjacent rights to hunting and fishing, was a form of private property. -
Migration Between Politics, Journalism and PR New Conditions for Power, Citizenship and Democracy?
10.2478/nor-2014-0109 Nordicom Review 35 (2014) Special Issue, pp. 141-153 Migration between Politics, Journalism and PR New Conditions for Power, Citizenship and Democracy? Göran Palm & Håkan Sandström Abstract In this article we present a preliminary theoretical background and some empirical findings concerning a migrating trend between the fields of politics, PR and journalism: one day a political reporter, the next a communication officer; one day a PR consultant, the next a state secretary. To understand contemporary politics one must, we argue, comprehend the convergence between three fields of power holders that together form the realm of politics and communication: elite politicians, elite political reporters and elite communication/PR officers. Together, they form a communication elite that sets the parameters for the public discourse on politics. When politics is produced and constructed in, and through, social networks formed by elite agents from politics, journalism and PR, what does this mean for how democracy is worked out and what does it mean for citizenship in general? Keywords: communication elites, convergence, politics, public relations, journalism, de- mocracy Introduction This text can be seen as a starting point for a research project – Post-politics in Medi- aocracy: the structural transformation of political communication – dealing with the fundamentals of contemporary Swedish politics and democracy. The basic outline of the project concerns social power, power agents and the production and construction of ‘the political’. In focus are the agents that form the realm of politics and political communication, that is, those agents that possess the resources to produce a dominant discourse – a basic knowledge structure – of politics and democracy, but also how this agency is socially and culturally contextualized. -

Review of Ludwig Qvarnström (ed.), Swedish Art History: A Selection of Introductory Texts, Lund Studies in Arts and Cultural Sciences 18, 2018. ISBN: 978-91-983690-6-9, 408 p. In his introduction to Swedish Art History: A Selection of Introductory Texts, its editor Ludwig Qvarnström asks, ’Do we need another national art history in these days of globalisation?’ He goes on to reply to his own question by citing the practical needs of, for example, exchange students who have come to study art history at the University of Lund. The history of Swedish art, any more than that of other Nordic countries, is not to be found in so-called general works of art history. For this reason, there has been a focus in all these countries on providing general presentations of the country’s art history, of either broader or more limited scope. English-language versions of these works, however, have been rare. With this in mind, it is understandable that the University of Lund has chosen to publish the book discussed here, especially since the previous general work on Swedish art history in English, A History of Swedish Art by Mereth Lindgren et al. (1987), has been out of print for many years. This new work presents Swedish art history from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The book’s heading, however, specifies that it is a selection of introductory texts by various experts. -
