The present study has been based as far as possible on primary sources such as protocols, letters, legal documents, and articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers from the nineteenth century. A contextual-comparative approach was employed to evaluate the objectivity of a given source. Secondary sources have also been consulted for interpretation and as corroborating evidence, especially when no primary sources were available. The study concludes that the Pietist revival ignited by the Norwegian Lutheran lay preacher, Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824), represented the culmination of the sixteenth- century Reformation in Norway, and the forerunner of the Adventist movement in that country.

Introduction The Waldegrave Initiative is the name given to a policy introduced in 1992 by Lord Waldegrave, an English Conservative politician who served in the British Cabinet from 1990 – 1997. Under this policy, all government departments were encouraged to re-examine what had been previously regarded as particularly sensitive records, with the objective of declassifying a greater quantity of information. This initiative is widely regarded as the precursor to the UK’s Freedom of Information Act 2000, and it set a precedent of declassification across Western democracies. The Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a secret British organisation formed 22 July 1940 by Winston Churchill to conduct espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in occupied Europe against the Axis powers as well as to aid local resistance movements. As Mark Seaman put it, the SOE was formed to “foster occupied Europe’s resistance groups” and ensure that “Nazi occupation wasn’t an easy thing”.1 It operated in all countries or former countries occupied by or attacked by the Axis forces, except where demarcation lines were agreed with Britain's principal allies – namely the Soviet Union and the United States of America. Initially it was also involved in the formation of the Auxiliary Units, a top secret "stay-behind" resistance organisation, which would have been activated in the event of a German invasion of mainland Britain.2 To those who were part of the SOE or liaised with it, it was sometimes referred to as "the Baker Street Irregulars" (after the location of its London headquarters). It was also known as "Churchill's Secret Army" or the "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare".

Christmas Around the World Sweden Christmas in Sweden Book List: Christmas in Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren Kirsten’s Surprise by Janet Beeler Shaw and Renee Graef Annika’s Secret Wish by Beverly Lewis (HSS unit) Geography: Sweden is in Northern Europe and is considered a Scandinavian country. Stockholm is the largest city and the capital. Sweden is bordered by the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea, Norway and Finland. The country is traditional divided into three “Lands” or areas: Gotaland (South), Svealand (mid-section of Sweden), and Norrland (North). The Swedish flag has a medium blue background with a yellow cross on it. Preparation: Christmas is celebrated for almost two months in Sweden. It starts with the first Sunday in Advent. Each Sunday prior to Christmas another candle is lit. Christmas trees are normally brought into homes a few days before Christmas. Traditions: St. Lucia: Early on the morning of December 13th the oldest daughter of the family puts on a white robe and a head wreath of candles. She then serves the family Lussekatter (St. Lucia buns) and coffee in bed. This custom goes back to Lucia, a Christian girl martyred for her beliefs in the 4th century. Today in every town and school a “Lucia” is chosen. There is also an election to choose a Lucia for the big parade in Stockholm. Christmas Eve: This is the day of the Christmas feast, which is a smorgasbord with ham, lutfisk (cod in a cream sauce), pickled pig’s feet, and rice pudding (There is normally an almond hidden in the pudding.

fLaMMan claes-Göran holmberg Precursors swedish avant-garde groups were very late in founding their own magazines. in france and Germany, little magazines had been pub- lished continuously from the romantic era onwards. a magazine was an ideal platform for the consolidation of a new movement in its formative phase. it was a collective thrust at the heart of the enemy: the older generation, the academies, the traditionalists. By showing a united front (through programmatic declarations, manifestos, es- says etc.) you assured the public that you were to be reckoned with. almost every new artist group or current has tried to create a mag- azine to define and promote itself. the first swedish little magazine to embrace the symbolist and decadent movements of fin-de-siècle europe was Med pensel och penna (With paintbrush and pen, 1904-1905), published in Uppsala by the society of “Les quatres diables”, a group of young poets and students engaged in aestheticism and Baudelaire adulation. Mem- bers were the poet and student in slavic languages sigurd agrell (1881-1937), the student and later professor of art history harald Brising (1881-1918), the student of philosophy and later professor of psychology John Landquist (1881-1974), and the author sven Lidman (1882-1960); the poet sigfrid siwertz (1882-1970) also joined the group later. the magazine did not leave any great impact on swedish literature but it helped to spread the Jugend style of illu- stration, the contemporary love-hate relationship with the city and the celebration of the intoxicating powers of beauty and deca- dence.

Review of Ludwig Qvarnström (ed.), Swedish Art History: A Selection of Introductory Texts, Lund Studies in Arts and Cultural Sciences 18, 2018. ISBN: 978-91-983690-6-9, 408 p. In his introduction to Swedish Art History: A Selection of Introductory Texts, its editor Ludwig Qvarnström asks, ’Do we need another national art history in these days of globalisation?’ He goes on to reply to his own question by citing the practical needs of, for example, exchange students who have come to study art history at the University of Lund. The history of Swedish art, any more than that of other Nordic countries, is not to be found in so-called general works of art history. For this reason, there has been a focus in all these countries on providing general presentations of the country’s art history, of either broader or more limited scope. English-language versions of these works, however, have been rare. With this in mind, it is understandable that the University of Lund has chosen to publish the book discussed here, especially since the previous general work on Swedish art history in English, A History of Swedish Art by Mereth Lindgren et al. (1987), has been out of print for many years. This new work presents Swedish art history from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The book’s heading, however, specifies that it is a selection of introductory texts by various experts.
