Christmas-Around-The-World-Sweden
Christmas Around the World Sweden Christmas in Sweden Book List: Christmas in Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren Kirsten’s Surprise by Janet Beeler Shaw and Renee Graef Annika’s Secret Wish by Beverly Lewis (HSS unit) Geography: Sweden is in Northern Europe and is considered a Scandinavian country. Stockholm is the largest city and the capital. Sweden is bordered by the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea, Norway and Finland. The country is traditional divided into three “Lands” or areas: Gotaland (South), Svealand (mid-section of Sweden), and Norrland (North). The Swedish flag has a medium blue background with a yellow cross on it. Preparation: Christmas is celebrated for almost two months in Sweden. It starts with the first Sunday in Advent. Each Sunday prior to Christmas another candle is lit. Christmas trees are normally brought into homes a few days before Christmas. Traditions: St. Lucia: Early on the morning of December 13th the oldest daughter of the family puts on a white robe and a head wreath of candles. She then serves the family Lussekatter (St. Lucia buns) and coffee in bed. This custom goes back to Lucia, a Christian girl martyred for her beliefs in the 4th century. Today in every town and school a “Lucia” is chosen. There is also an election to choose a Lucia for the big parade in Stockholm. Christmas Eve: This is the day of the Christmas feast, which is a smorgasbord with ham, lutfisk (cod in a cream sauce), pickled pig’s feet, and rice pudding (There is normally an almond hidden in the pudding. -

Culture Swedish Christmas Traditions Culture
Culture – connectedness in diversity Part one: How Christmas is celebrated 1st theme: Culture 2016-2017 Swedish Christmas traditions Typical ways to celebrate Christmas in Sweden Like any other thing we all do things differently in different families and social circles. This poster contains information about the more common traditions surrounding Christmas in Sweden. Before Christianity grew big in Sweden we celebrated Julblot (Yule) during the shortest days of the year. This is a “heathen” tradition from around/after the Viking age, stemming all the way back to before the 13th century. As Christianity grew in Sweden around the mid-1100s the pagan and Christian traditions began to mix. Most of the current traditions surrounding Christmas in Sweden is from the 1800s and 1900s. 1 Document Name In Omnibus Omnia Est – an Erasmus+ project www.iooe.eu 2016-12-18 1 Common Christmas traditions A few of the more common Christmas Another common tradition is the advent traditions in Sweden is advent, Lucia, calendar, which came to Sweden in 1932. lights, decorations, advent calendar Each day of December until Christmas eve and of course all sorts of sweets and you get to open a “window” on the calendar delicious foods. as the days grow closer to Christmas eve. CHRISTMAS Christmas with Naxos
CATALOGUE 2018 CHRISTMAS Christmas with Naxos Christmas is one of the most richly celebrated seasons around the world. While its focus rests on just a few days of the year, the wealth of music that has been written to mark its spirit and story is astonishingly plentiful and varied. Musicians continue to be inspired by the message of Christmas: in the following pages you will find examples of contemporary choral works by British composers John Tavener, James MacMillan and Sasha Johnson Manning alongside the established masterpieces of composers such as J. S. Bach, Handel and Berlioz. The Christmas story has also been recorded in opera, ballet and instrumental music, in a range of expression that runs from piety to jollity. Easy-listening compilations are well represented in the listings, including regional collections and the gamut of carols that are annual favourites, heard either in the splendour of Europe's historic cathedrals or in the local community. We hope our catalogue will serve you with music that is both comfortingly familiar and refreshingly novel. May you spend a very happy Christmas with Naxos. Läsrörelsen (The Reading Movement), Background Story Läsrörelsen, Projects
May 2015 Läsrörelsen (the Reading Movement), background story The first national campaign of the non-profit association, Läsrörelsen, started in 2000 with the motto “Give your children a language”, which is now the motto of the association. The initiative was partly due to a marked decrease in the number of parents who read to their young children, a development that had been going on for years and been reported in the so called Barnbarometern (Children’s Barometre) in 1999. Another reason was a study made by the OECD, which showed that 25 percent of the adult population in Sweden lacked in terms of reading and writing skills. A follow-up study showed that 20 percent of young adults (18–25 years old) did not manage to reach a level of reading and writing required to graduate from compulsory school. Läsrörelsen is also a continuation of the national Dyslexikampanjen (Dyslexia Campaign) carried out during the end of the 1990s, where Elisabet Reslegård acted as campaign leader and Bengt Westerberg (former Liberal Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister) as chairman. They maintained the same roles during the first years of Läsrörelsen. Another national campaign, Lär för livet (Learn for Life)/Läsrörelsen, began in September 2002, with curiosity as the keyword. Just like the previous campaign, it was a main theme at the Göteborg Book Fair. Läsrörelsen, projects LÄSLOVET (the Reading Holiday) week 44 – a wide collaboration to promote reading Every year, one million Swedish pupils have one week of holidays in the winter and one in the autumn. When the first holiday week was introduced in the winter of 1940 during World War II, it was called the Coke Holiday and was put in place to save heating costs in the schools (coke was used for heating at the time). -
