Band Instruments – Reliable Brands to Buy (2020 update list created by Bradley Mariska and crowdsourced by BDG) … Just like any product, there are good musical instruments and others that might not be worth the investment. If you are in the market for a new or used instrument, please consult this list (and look, you have LOTS of options!). Please email a band director if you find an instrument that is not on this list, as there may be other good instruments out there. With new instruments, you usually get what you pay for. With used instruments, you can sometimes find a name brand instrument as cheap as the ‘generic’ equivalent. But unlike the grocery store, ‘generic’ musical instruments very seldom measure up to the name brand equivalent. This is for many reasons: 1) Instruments made by companies listed below have a history of producing quality instruments. Generally speaking, they are designed and built by expert craftsmen. 2) Instruments from these companies use quality materials. The instruments are more reliable, have a longer lifespan, and parts are easily repaired and replaced if a problem develops. 3) Because they are crafted by experts and designed with quality materials, students can produce a quality sound more easily. 4) Repair technicians keep parts in stock for these instruments. These companies use standardized parts and materials that a repair technician can fix. Low-quality instruments use parts that aren’t compatible - don’t buy an instrument that cannot be repaired! It’s a waste of money. 5) Just because an instrument is shiny, it doesn’t mean it will work well.

It is reprinted here with permission in an English translation by James Aylward. Ed.) t used to be that orchestras, when they appointed a new second bassoon, would not take the best player, but a lesser one on instruction from the !rst bassoonist: the prima donna. "e !rst bassoonist would then blame the second for everything that went wrong. It was also not uncommon that the !rst bassoonist, when Ihe made a mistake, to shake an accusatory !nger at his colleague in clear view of the conductor. Nowadays it is clear that the second bassoon is not someone who is not good enough to play !rst, but a specialist in his own right. Jos de Lange and Ronald Karten, respectively second and !rst bassoonist from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra explain.) BASS VOICE Jos de Lange: What makes the second bassoon more interesting over the other woodwinds is that the bassoon is the bass. In the orchestra there are usually four voices: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. All the high winds are either soprano or alto, almost never tenor. !e "rst bassoon is o#en the tenor or the alto, and the second is the bass. !e bassoons are the tenor and bass of the woodwinds. !e second bassoon is the only bass and performs an important and rewarding function. One of the tasks of the second bassoon is to control the pitch, in other words to decide how high a chord is to be played.

  • A Selective Lineage of Mexican Bassoonists
A SELECTIVE LINEAGE OF MEXICAN BASSOONISTS Jorge A. Cruz Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2017 APPROVED: Kathleen Reynolds, Major Professor Eugene Corporon, Committee Member Kimberly Cole Luevano, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of College of Music Victor Prybutok, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Cruz, Jorge A. A Selective Lineage of Mexican Bassoonists. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2017, 68 pp., 5 tables, 5 figures, references, 25 titles. Spanish settlers brought the precursor to the bassoon, el bajón, to Mexico in the late sixteenth century. Documentation of the bassoon was intermittently from the sixteenth century on, the current playing traditions were not established until the second half of the twentieth century. Bassoon education in Mexico flourished in the 1970’s because several bassoonists became expatriates, and chose to live and work in Mexico for the entirety of their careers. Two major pedagogues, Lazar Stoychev and Jerzy Lemiszka paved the way for the current Mexican bassoon community. This dissertation presents a selective lineage of bassoonists who have held positions in major Mexican orchestras and universities since the mid-twentieth century. The purpose of this study is to recognize the contributions these players and teachers have given to the bassoon world. In recent years, Mexican bassoonists have commissioned hundreds of works for the bassoon and this significant achievement has placed the Mexican bassoon community in an upward trajectory. To place these players in proper historical context, a brief history of classical music institutions in Mexico since the sixteenth century is given.

Throughout the long history of contra- register double-reed instruments the assumed role has been to provide a foundation for the wind chord, along the same line as the double bass does for the strings. Due to the scale of these instruments - close to six metres in acoustic length, to reach the subcontra B flat’’, an octave below the bassoon’s lowest note, B flat’ - they have always been difficult and expensive to build, difficult to play, and often unsatisfactory in evenness of scale and dynamic range, and thus instruments and performers are relatively rare. Given this bleak outlook it is unusual to find a number of works written for solo contrabassoon by New Zealand composers. This exegesis considers the development of contra-register double-reed instruments both internationally and within New Zealand, and studies five works by New Zealand composers for solo contrabassoon, illuminating what it was that led them to compose for an instrument that has been described as the 'step-child' or 'Cinderella' of both the wind chord and instrument makers.

  • Oboe Trios: an Annotated Bibliography
Oboe Trios: An Annotated Bibliography by Melissa Sassaman A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved November 2014 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Martin Schuring, Chair Elizabeth Buck Amy Holbrook Gary Hill ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2014 ABSTRACT This project is a practical annotated bibliography of original works for oboe trio with the specific instrumentation of two oboes and English horn. Presenting descriptions of 116 readily available oboe trios, this project is intended to promote awareness, accessibility, and performance of compositions within this genre. The annotated bibliography focuses exclusively on original, published works for two oboes and English horn. Unpublished works, arrangements, works that are out of print and not available through interlibrary loan, or works that feature slightly altered instrumentation are not included. Entries in this annotated bibliography are listed alphabetically by the last name of the composer. Each entry includes the dates of the composer and a brief biography, followed by the title of the work, composition date, commission, and dedication of the piece. Also included are the names of publishers, the length of the entire piece in minutes and seconds, and an incipit of the first one to eight measures for each movement of the work. In addition to providing a comprehensive and detailed bibliography of oboe trios, this document traces the history of the oboe trio and includes biographical sketches of each composer cited, allowing readers to place the genre of oboe trios and each individual composition into its historical context. Four appendices at the end include a list of trios arranged alphabetically by composer’s last name, chronologically by the date of composition, and by country of origin and a list of publications of Ludwig van Beethoven's oboe trios from the 1940s and earlier.

  • Information Sheet About Advanced Student and Graduate Instruments)
STEVE TADD WOODWIND REPAIRS (.co.uk) 07734 543011 A beginner’s guide to student Oboes (Jul 2019) Although Oboes are classed as a woodwind instruments, student Oboes may be made of plastic or wood. Professional instruments are usually made of wood (which helps give them a richer tone). The Oboe is a member of a family that is made up of the Oboe, the Cor Anglais, the Oboe d’amore, the Bass Oboe and the Heckelphone. The Oboe (or ‘Soprano’ Oboe to give it its full name) is the most common member of the family. The Oboe is played by inserting a double reed (a small piece of folded cane) into the top of the instrument and blowing; the player covers or uncovers holes on the instrument to produce notes. People who start playing the Oboe have usually made significant progress on some other instrument first. The Oboe is played with a double reed (whereas the Clarinet and Saxophone are played with a single reed) and it is difficult to play in tune, so it is best that the player has already developed their ‘musical ear’ to some extent. Tuition for children is not usually available until secondary school – this is not just because of the difficulty in playing the instrument but because good quality student instruments are expensive (however Howarth have recently started manufacturing a ‘Junior’ Oboe and this may change the current structure of Oboe tuition – see below). The parts of an Oboe • The top-joint - it has a narrow metal socket at the top end (into which the reed fits) and a corked tenon at the other end; it also has a lot of keys , these are operated by the player so that the various pads cover or uncover the tone-holes to make different musical notes • The bottom-joint - it has one corked tenon and also has keys.

  • Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire
Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire by Peter Hurd; reorganized and amended by Holger Hoos, editor-in-chief since 2020 version 1.2 (21 March 2021) This collection is based on the catalogue of musical works requiring heckelphone or bass oboe instrumen- tation assembled by Peter Hurd beginning in 1998. For this new edition, the original version of the repertoire list has been edited for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and it has been extended with a number of newly discovered pieces. Some entries could not (yet) be rigorously verified for accuracy; these were included nonetheless, to provide leads for future investigation, but are marked clearly. Pieces were selected for inclusion based solely on the use of heckelphone, bass oboe or lupophone, without any attempt at assessing their artistic merit. Arrangements of pieces not originally intended for these instruments were included when there was clear evidence that they had found a significant audience. The authors gratefully acknowledge contributions by Michael Finkelman, Alain Girard, Thomas Hiniker, Robert Howe, Gunther Joppig, Georg Otto Klapproth, Mark Perchanok, Andrew Shreeves and Michael Sluman. Eastern Kentucky University Chronicling the Developments of The Double Reed Honors Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of HON 420 Spring 2016 By Jenna Sehmann Mentor Dr. Christine Carucci Music Department Abstract Chronicling the Developments of The Double Reed Jenna Sehmann Dr. Christine Carucci, Music Department Abstract Description: This study examines scholarly articles in thirty-eight years of periodical journals, The Double Reed, published by the International Double Reed Society. Research articles were coded to fit into twelve prominent categories: career-related, composition, extended techniques/modern practices, health, historical, instrument, interview, pedagogy, performance practice, performer profile, reeds, and other. After an analysis of journal articles (N =935) from The Double Reed, results indicated historical articles, interviews, and composition-related articles were the most prominent categories. There was a fairly even dispersion between oboe and bassoon articles, while the majority of published material was generated from American authors. Additional trends are noted to inform and advance the double reed community.
