Teacher departs in her favorite season ; Family remembers upbeat approach Project: 2010 Hits Date: 12/19/2010 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: Concord Monitor (NH) Journalist: Ray Duckler; Monitor staff City: Concord State: NH

Buck up, Jane Merrow liked to say. No crying, the Rundlett Middle School teacher demanded, before cancer killed her last Tuesday.

And, it turns out, Merrow walked the walk. No one saw her tears in that Boston hospital room, where she had spent the last five weeks of her life. No one heard her complain.

Merrow kept pulling the strings from her bed, giving instructions about gift shopping on Black Friday, keeping tabs by phone, preparing for her favorite time of year like she'd be sharing the holiday at home with her family.

Just like every year.

"We get through it by thinking of happy things," said Merrow's mom, Priscilla Fanny. "So that's what we do."

Fanny, Merrow's husband, Chip, and his sister, Amy Pierson, visiting from Florida, sat in the family home in Loudon last week and marveled at Merrow's spirit.

"She never got down," said Chip Merrow, a retired firefighter. "Just a good person."

She suffered from myeloid sarcoma, a rare form of leukemia, diagnosed in October 2009. She lost her hair from the treatments, but never her sense of humor. This was a woman who carried a metal Dracula lunchbox to school. Merrow was a remedial reading teacher. Her students also had to buck up. No choice there, either.

"She had a great way of working with middle school students," said Melissa Valence, a tutor in Merrow's class. "They have that struggle of not wanting to learn, and she told them point blank that they had to read and they didn't have a choice and she was going to make them do it."

Merrow, 47 when she died, took a leave of absence this year and hoped to return to Rundlett next spring. She almost died last winter, after a round of chemotherapy perforated her intestine. She lost a lot of blood and slipped into a coma, but she pulled through and kept fighting.

"I said to her that it should be me that has this, and she said, 'No no, not you, because you wouldn't fight it,' " Fanny said. "She never cried through all of this. I had to control myself."

She was going to need a bone marrow transplant to replenish her immune system after more tumors were discovered last summer, but Merrow never got that far. The cancer kept coming back, followed by chemotherapy treatment, and Merrow's body never recovered enough for doctors to perform the transplant.

Starting Nov. 6, Merrow's family made regular visits to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Her oldest son, Lyford, a student at Utah State University, flew in twice, with Concord firefighters picking up the tab each time.

But before being admitted, Merrow had gone Christmas shopping, starting with a trip with Chip to Freeport, Maine, in September and continuing into October.

"She knew she wasn't going to make it," Fanny said. "How she knew, I don't know."

That didn't stop Merrow from directing traffic from her bed, from taking charge, from keeping a family tradition alive. Hadn't the family always risen at 5 a.m. on Black Friday? Hadn't they always gone shopping that day, battling the crowds? And hadn't they always gone to Friendly's for breakfast afterward? Why stop now?

Merrow insisted that her husband, her mother and her two sons, including Nathan, a senior at Merrimack Valley High, continue just as they always had.

Buy a TV at Walmart in Concord, she ordered. Buy a coffeemaker at Macy's in Bedford, she said. Then eat. Together.

And she called and called and called some more that day, perhaps 15 times, just to make sure things were going smoothly.

"We had to tell her everything," Fanny said. "The more we talked to her, she said the more she felt like she was with us."

This month Merrow began to slip in and out of consciousness, reduced to hand gestures and nods to communicate. Hospice care followed.

"She could see everyone and she liked everyone to talk to her," Chip said. "She just wanted to hear voices."

She died peacefully on Tuesday, during her favorite time of year. Her house once sported a Christmas tree in every room through the holiday season, but Merrow's health forced her to cut back this year.

Still, her warmth lingers. In her favorite room there's a fireplace and a chess board and a piano and photos of Merrow, with soft brown hair and smiling eyes, her graduation pictures from Concord High and Keene State College.

And there's a Christmas tree in the corner, near the door. Those are Merrow's gifts underneath it, chosen by her a couple of months ago, wrapped by her, loved by her. And those are her ornaments, collected through the years, like the Eiffel Tower she got in Paris and the deer she got at Yellowstone National Park and the photos of Lyford and Nathan, made when they were children.

"If I would cry or get upset, she'd tell me to buck up," Fanny said. "Christmas will be a hard day for us, but we've got to get through it."

Her daughter wouldn't have it any other way.

PROVO, Utah_Provo Mayor John Curtis says the interior of the historic Provo Tabernacle "looked like World War II" after the building was ravaged by a fire. Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the blaze that gutted the landmark sometime late Thursday or early Friday.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ A man who crashed the security gates at Hill Air Force Base has been sentenced to serve just over four years in federal prison. Teofilo Quintana pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated identify theft in January after a search of the vehicle turned up multiple stolen items, including checks and fake IDs.

OREM, Utah (AP) _ Orem police are crediting Facebook with helping them track down two men accused of stealing $100,000 worth of items in four Utah County school burglaries. Police Sgt. Craig Martinez tells the Daily Herald of Provo detectives received a tip that the suspects had bragged on the social networking site that it was going to be a good Christmas this year. A third suspect is expected to be arrested.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) _ Two more Utah State University students have been arrested in the theft of evergreen trees from the Logan Cemetery. Logan Assistant Police Chief Jeff Curtis says the students chopped down the tree Dec. 4 to use as a Christmas tree. Curtis says he's unsure whether the theft is connected to three other students accused of taking another cemetery tree for the holidays.
