De MOLL & COMPANY 1229 G Street, N.W. Overture, "The Roman Carnival," Op. 9 . Hector Berlioz (Born at la Cote Saint-Andr6, December 11, 1803; died at Paris, March 9, 1869.) Berlioz's overture, "Le Carnaval Romain," dedicated to Prince de Hohenzollern-Hechingen, was performed for the first time, and under the direction of the composer, at the Salle Herz, Paris, on February 3, 1844. The first performance in Boston was at a Philharmonic concert, led by Mr. Carl Zerrahn, at the Melodeon on January 24, 1857. The overture then reminded Mr. J. S. Dwight of "Mr. Fry's 'Christmas' symphony." The chief thematic material of the overture was taken by Berlioz from his opera, "Benvenuto Cellini," which was originally in two acts. It was produced at the Op6ra, Paris, on September 10, 1838, when Duprez took the part of the hero, and Julie Aimee Dorus-Gras the part •of Teresa. The text was written by Leon de Wailly and Auguste Barbier. The music was then thought so difficult that there were twenty-nine full rehearsals. The opera failed dismally. There were three performances in 1838, four in 1839. The opera, with a German text, was produced by Liszt at Weimar on March 20, 1852, with Beck as Cellini and Mrs. Milde as the heroine. Berlioz was not able to be present. He wrote on February 10 to Morel before the performance: ''They have been at work on it for four months. I cleaned it well, re-sewed and restored it. I had not looked at it for thirteen years; it is devilishly vivace." The 6pera failed at London on June 25, 1853. Chorley said: "The evening was one of the most melancholy evenings which I ever passed in any theatre. 'Benvenu to Cellini' failed more decidedly than any foreign opera I recollect to have seen performed in London. At an early period of the evening the humor of the audience began to show itself, and the painful spectacle had to be endured of seeing the composer conducting his own work through every stage r *! There was even an attempt to prevent the performance of "The Roman Carnival," which was played before the second act, although this same overture had been applauded by a London concert audience in 1848. Chorley criticised the music of the opera apparently without prejudice and with keen discrimina- tion. The following quotation from his article bears on the overture; "The ease of the singers is disregarded with a despotism which is virtu- ally another confession of weakness. As music, the scene in the second act, known in another form as its composer's happiest overture, 'The Roman Carnival,' has the true Italian spirit of the joyous time ; but the chorus-singers are so run out of breath, and are so perpetually called on to catch or snatch at some passage, which ought to be struck off with the sharpest decision,—that the real spirit instinct in the music is thoroughly driven out of it." At this performance the chief singers were Mmes. Julienne-Dejean and Nantier-Didi£e, and Tamberlik, Formes, and Tagliafico. The opera was revived by von Biilow at Hannover in 1879 and afterward at other German cities, as Leipsic (1883), Dresden (1888), Carlsruhe. The original translation into German was by A. F. Riccius. The one used later was made by Peter Cornelius, the composer. The story has been condemned as weak and foolish. It is also purely fictitious.* It is enough to say in explanation of this overture that in 1532 Cellini is in Rome, called thither by the Pope. He falls in love with Teresa, the daughter of Balducci, an old man, who favors another suitor, Fieramosca, the Pope's sculptor. Cellini attempts to elope with her, and neglects work on his Perseus, which he at last finishes in an hour's time, fired by the promise of Cardinal Salviati to reward him with the hand of Teresa. The overture begins, allegro assai con fuoco, with the chief theme, * It is true that there was a Giacopo Balducci at Rome, the Master of the Mint. Cellini describes him. "that traitor of a master, being in fact my enemy"; but he had no daughter loved by Cellini. The statue 01 Perseus was modelled and cast at Florence in' 1545* after this visit to Rome, for the Duke Cosimo-de ? Medici. Nor doe9 Ascanio, the apprentice, figure in the scenes at Florence.     Page 1 (1/31/20) Waltz in E-flat major, Op. 19 FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN (1810-1849) Composed in 1831. Chopin’s Waltz in E-flat major, Op. 18, his first published specimen of the genre and one of his most beloved, was composed in 1831, when he was living anxiously in Vienna, almost unknown as a composer and only slightly appreciated as a pianist. In 1834, he sold it to the Parisian publisher Pleyel to finance his trip with Ferdinand Hiller to the Lower Rhineland Music Festival at Aachen, where Hiller introduced him to his long-time friend Felix Mendelssohn. The piece was dedicated upon its publication to Mlle. Laura Horsford, one of two sisters Chopin then counted among his aristocratic pupils. (Sister Emma had received the dedication of the Variations on “Je vends des scapulaires” from Hérold’s Ludovic, Op. 12 the year before.) The Waltz in E-flat follows the characteristic Viennese form of a continuous series of sixteen- measure strains filled with both new and repeated melodies that are capped by a vigorous coda. Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23 FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN Composed 1831. In the Ballades, “Chopin reaches his full stature as the unapproachable genius of the pianoforte,” according to Arthur Hedley, “a master of rich and subtle harmony and, above all, a poet — one of those whose vision transcends the confines of nation and epoch, and whose mission it is to share with the world some of the beauty that is revealed to them alone.” Though the Ballades came to form a nicely cohesive set unified by their temporal scale, structural fluidity and supranational idiom, Chopin composed them over a period of more than a decade.

    Sophie Menter (b. Munich, 29 July 1846 – d. Stockdorf nr. Munich, 23 Feb. 1918) Ungarische Zigeunerweisen für Klavier und Orchester (Hungarian Gypsy Songs for Piano and Orchestra) orchestrated by P. I. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Sophie Menter was one of the greatest and much lauded pianists of the later nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries. Musically precocious, Menter, who was the daughter of the distinguished violoncellist Josef Menter and his wife, the singer Wilhelmine Menter (née Diepold), pursued her early studies with Julius Leonhard, Siegmund Lebert and Friederich Niest.1 She made her orchestral debut in 1861 with Weber’s Konzertstücke conducted by Franz Lachner and, in 1863, embarked on her first concert tour with recitals in Germany and Switzerland.2 Much acclaimed for her Liszt performances even at this early stage of her career, Menter subsequently studied with Carl Tausig and Hans von Bülow (1867-1869) and finally in Budapest with Franz Liszt (1869-1870) who called her ‘my only legitimate musical daughter.’3 Menter pursued a busy recital career throughout Europe, visiting Britain a number of times between 1881 and 1907,4 the success of her first visit resulting in her being elected to an honorary membership of the Philharmonic Society of London.5 Menter’s distinguished career was capped by royal appointments as Court Pianist to the Prince of Hohenzollern, and also the Austrian Emperor.6 Between 1883 and 1887 she was Professor of Pianoforte at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. This lecture recital seeks to prove that Sergei Taneyev’s only piano concerto is a valuable addition to the piano concerto repertoire for historical and theoretical examination. Taneyev’s biographical background proves he was one of the major figures in Russian musical life during the late nineteenth century. For one who had such an important role in music history, it is an unfortunate that his music has not been popular. Through letters to contemporary composers and friends, Taneyev’s master teacher Tchaikovsky revealed why his music and piano concerto were not as popular as they should have been. This lecture recital examines Taneyev’s compositional style and illustrates his influence in the works of his famous student Sergei Rachmaninoff through examples from Taneyev’s Piano Concerto in E-flat Major and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.

    The Development of the Russian Piano Concerto in the Nineteenth Century Jeremy Paul Norris Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music 1988 December The Development of the Russian Piano Concerto in the Nineteenth Century Jeremy Paul Norris The Russian piano concerto could not have had more inauspicious beginnings. Unlike the symphonic poem (and, indirectly, the symphony) - genres for which Glinka, the so-called 'Father of Russian Music', provided an invaluable model: 'Well? It's all in "Kamarinskaya", just as the whole oak is in the acorn' to quote Tchaikovsky - the Russian piano concerto had no such indigenous prototype. All that existed to inspire would-be concerto composers were a handful of inferior pot- pourris and variations for piano and orchestra and a negligible concerto by Villoing dating from the 1830s. Rubinstein's five con- certos certainly offered something more substantial, as Tchaikovsky acknowledged in his First Concerto, but by this time the century was approaching its final quarter. This absence of a prototype is reflected in all aspects of Russian concerto composition. Most Russian concertos lean perceptibly on the stylistic features of Western European composers and several can be justly accused of plagiarism. Furthermore, Russian composers faced formidable problems concerning the structural organization of their concertos, a factor which contributed to the inability of several, including Balakirev and Taneyev, to complete their works. Even Tchaikovsky encountered difficulties which he was not always able to overcome. The most successful Russian piano concertos of the nineteenth century, Tchaikovsky's No.1 in B flat minor, Rimsky-Korsakov's Concerto in C sharp minor and Balakirev's Concerto in E flat, returned ii to indigenous sources of inspiration: Russian folk song and Russian orthodox chant.

Chapter 1 makes note of the much greater familiarity of other choral works of the Romantic period, and observes critics’ and scholars’ recognition (or lack thereof) of Liszt’s religiosity. Chapter 2 discusses Liszt’s father Adam, his religious and musical experiences, and his influence on the young Franz. Chapter 3 explores Liszt’s early adulthood in Paris, particularly with respect to his intellectual growth. Special attention is given to François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand and the Abbé Félicité de Lamennais, and the latter’s papal condemnation. After Chapter 4 briefly chronicles Liszt’s artistic achievements in Weimar and its ramifications for the rest of his work, Chapter 5 examines theological trends in the nineteenth century, as exemplified by David Friedrich Strauss, and the Catholic Church’s rejection of such novelties. The writings of Charles Rosen aid in decribing the possible musical ramifications of modern theology. Chapter 6 takes stock of the movements for renewal in Catholic music, especially the work of Prosper Gueranger and his fellow Benedictine monks of Solesmes, France, and of the Society of Saint Cecilia in Germany.
