Programme – Swansea Ramblers We offer short & long walks all year around and welcome new walkers to try a walk with us. Mailing List: [email protected] 1 Swansea Ramblers wish to thank all walk leaders for providing walks for this programme. Without volunteer leaders, a programme of walks would not be possible. If you are a member of the Ramblers and would like to learn how to lead a walk, please contact the Programme Coordinator. Since then we have welcomed many new walkers to the group who come to share our enjoyment of the countryside. We organise walks across a wide area into East Wales, West Wales, Mid- Wales, and of course Gower. The Ramblers' Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales. Company registration number: 4458492. A registered charity in England & Wales, no: 1093577. A registered charity in Scotland, no: SC03979. Registered office: 2nd floor, Camelford House, 87- 90 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TW. Front Cover Photograph: Llanrhidian Church v10 2 Programme Updates: www.SwanseaRamblers.org.uk Keeping in Touch We occasionally send out emails about social events and to let you know what’s happening in the group. If you would like to receive these details, please email the secretary. Additional walks after the programme has been printed In addition to the walks in this programme, midweek walks may be planned at short notice. Any additional walks will be emailed to members and published on the Swansea & National Ramblers websites at least 5 days before the walk. If you are able to volunteer to lead a midweek walk, please email details to the Weekday Walks co-ordinator. Joining a walk Our walks are open to anyone and newcomers are especially welcome. If you have enjoyed three of our walks and wish to continue to walk regularly with us, we will be pleased to invite you to become a member. Occasionally there are 1st year discounts for new members so please ask us for more details. Walkers must wear suitable footwear and clothing, carry enough food and drink plus a small First Aid pack. While the safety of members is always of paramount concern, accidents may occasionally occur so please carry ID and contact numbers. It is also important to appreciate that you have a responsibility for the safety of both yourself and fellow walkers. Meeting for the walk The start point of a walk is sometimes given in the programme in addition to the meeting point. In exceptional circumstances, such as adverse weather conditions, the leader might need to cancel the walk. The leader will only inform those present at the meeting point. Anyone travelling directly to the start point is advised to contact the leader to confirm if the walk will go ahead. Dogs on walks A number of our group like to bring dogs along and where we do not go near livestock, four-legged companions are welcome. The walk description indicates whether a dog is allowed on a walk and it remains a leader’s decision if they think a walk is unsuitable for dogs. To ensure the safety of other walkers and to prevent dogs chasing animals, all dogs must remain on a non-extendable short lead. During the lambing season, (1st Dec. - 30th April), dogs are NOT allowed unless the walk does not cross farmland. Unfortunately livestock can be disturbed even by the presence of a dog on a lead. Mailing List: [email protected] 3 Using Public Transport / Car Sharing Members are encouraged to plan/attend walks using public transport. Information from Traveline Cymru (Tel: 0871-200-22-33) http://www.traveline-cymru.info/ and http://www.baytrans.org.uk/. Car sharing is another option to reduce fuel costs. Those wishing to request a lift should do so in advance of the walk. The driver may either intend to have refreshments after the walk or return immediately, so the driver’s wishes should be confirmed before accepting a lift. Passengers would be expected to contribute towards the driver’s petrol costs which can be estimated by going to Google Maps and selecting ‘Get Directions’. If you have any doubt about your fitness for a particular walk please contact the organiser or leader in advance. • Bear in mind the distance of the walk, regional differences in terrain and the possibility of bad weather, which can make a walk more difficult than planned. • If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy/leisurely walk first - it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted. • Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. 4 Programme Updates: www.SwanseaRamblers.org.uk Walks are graded as follows:- • Easy Access - walks for everyone, including people with conventional wheelchairs and pushchairs, using easy access paths. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn. Assistance may be needed to push wheelchairs on some sections, please contact the leader running the walk for details. • Easy - walks for anyone who does not have a mobility difficulty, a specific health problem or is seriously unfit. Suitable for pushchairs if they can be lifted over occasional obstructions. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn. • Leisurely - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended. • Moderate - walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. • Strenuous - walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. People in doubt about their fitness should contact the organiser or leader in advance. • Technical - walks for experienced and very fit walkers with additional technical skills. May require scrambling and use of ropes, ice axes and crampons. You must contact the organiser or leader in advance for further details. Walking Etiquette –Safety at all times! We are all responsible for our own safety and that of others on the walk. We need to keep together and not stride out ahead of the leader or force the pace. Participants should not leave the group during the walk without reference to the leader or the back-marker. This may cause the walk leader (& emergency services) to waste time looking for you! Publicity photographs for our website We often take photographs and video of our walks to publicise our programme on the web and in newspapers/periodicals, etc. If you do not wish to appear in these then please let the leader know each time you join a walk.
