On 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

WHO defines a pandemic as “an outbreak of a new pathogen that spreads easily from person to person across the globe”. On 11 March 2020, WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a Pandemic.

Health authorities first identified cases of novel coronavirus in Australia in January 2020.
