My research examines the selected poems for their reimagination of the sacred perceived through attachments to particular places. For these writers, poetry is a constitutive practice, part of a way of life that includes desire for wise participation in the more-than-human community. Taking into account the poets’ critical reflections and historical-cultural contexts, along with a range of critical and philosophical sources, the poetry is examined as a discursive spiritual exercise. It is seen as conjoined with other focal practices of place, notably meditative walking and attentive looking and listening under the influence of ecospiritual eros. My analysis attends to aesthetics of relinquishment, formal strategies employed to recognize and accept finitude and the non- anthropocentric nature of reality, along with the complementary aesthetics of affirmation, configuration of the goodness of the whole. I identify an orienting feature of West Coast place, particular to each poet, that recurs as a leitmotif for engagement of such aesthetics and related practices. In chapter one, I consider a group of Jeffers’s final poems as part of a project he designated “our De Natura,” attending especially to his affinity for stones and stars. Introduction: Ecospirituality on “the Fringey Edge” “Here is the fringey edge where elements meet and realms mingle, where time and eternity spatter each other with foam.” —Annie Dillard (Holy the Firm 21) We are at home only so long as we are inhabited, alive only so long as we are lived in by the places where we are. —Robert Bringhurst, “Ursa Minor” (Selected 243) Insofar as I am “at home” in Robert Bringhurst’s sense, this work, Edge Effects: Poetry, Place, and Spiritual Practices, partakes of the same “fringey edge” region of Annie Dillard’s eccentric memoir, Holy the Firm. Following Dillard, I use the word “edge” both geographically and spiritually, to signal my focus on the intersection of the environmental and religious imaginations in the work of five poets who have written from the perspective of places on the Pacific coast they have called home: Robinson Jeffers, Theodore Roethke, Robert Hass, Denise Levertov, and Jan Zwicky. Like all the poets except for Hass, I migrated here from elsewhere. But for over twenty-five years, I have lived minutes away from a dike trail built along the eastern shoreline of Tsawwassen in southwestern British Columbia. As this place has helped to ground and orient my research, I will begin by acknowledging it. The name Tsawwassen is derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (or Downriver Halkomelem) word translated as “facing seaward” (Akrigg 273). The Salish Sea waters of Boundary Bay caress and, very occasionally, crash on this side of the peninsula, those of the Georgia Strait, on 2 the west and south side. Here the official boundary between Canada and the United States is naturally fluid. On a map, the forty-ninth parallel runs across the bay, making the southern tip of this peninsula a tiny land exclave of Whatcom County in the greater Puget Sound region of Washington State. The peculiarly isolated position of Point Roberts’s American residents is a reminder of the essentially arbitrary, abstract measures in the construction of the nation-states’ enclosing lines. But the waterfowl in the bay give a signal that grander

    99 BARBARA PUSCHMANN-NALENZ "Et in Arcadia ille – this one is/was also in Arcadia:" Human Life and Death as Comedy for the Immortals in John Banville's The Infinities Hermes the messenger of the gods quotes this slightly altered Latin motto (Banville 2009, 143). The original phrase, based on a quotation from Virgil, reads "et in Arcadia ego" and became known as the title of a painting by Nicolas Poussin (1637/38) entitled "The Arcadian Shepherds," in which the rustics mentioned in the title stumble across a tomb in a pastoral landscape. The iconography of a baroque memento mori had been followed even more graphically in an earlier picture by Giovanni Barbieri, which shows a skull discovered by two astonished shepherds. In its initial wording the quotation from Virgil also appears as a prefix in Goethe's autobiographical Italienische Reise (1813-17) as well as in Evelyn Waugh's country- house novel Brideshead Revisited (1945). The fictive first-person speaker of the Latin phrase is usually interpreted as Death himself ("even in Arcadia, there am I"), but the paintings' inscription may also refer to the man whose mortal remains in an idyllic countryside remind the spectator of his own inevitable fate ("I also was in Arcadia"). The intermediality and equivocacy of the motto are continued in The Infinities.1 The reviewer in The Guardian ignores the unique characteristics of this book, Banville's first literary novel after his prize-winning The Sea, when he maintains that "it serves as a kind of catalogue of his favourite themes and props" (Tayler 2009).

    1 W S MILNE ‘Agenda Magazine, a Short History’ A talk given on 5 October 2019 at the Art Workers Guild, Queen Square, London to celebrate Agenda’s 60 th birthday “Cookson, OK. Stop Agenda with no.4 or 5!” This telegraphic instruction of Pound’s, thankfully, of course, William Cookson never heeded. We’re now on issue No.220 or thereabouts, I think – a Special Issue on Anglo- French Poetry in the pipeline, a reminder perhaps that Agenda has always had a global orientation, not merely a national one. Pound underestimated William’s obstinacy. Lord Gowrie (a long-time supporter of Agenda , and present here to speak after me) thought Mrs Thatcher the most stubborn individual he had ever met (whilst acting as Arts Minister in her Administration) that is, he confessed, until he met William Cookson. Ezra Pound’s role in founding Agenda has been well documented by William himself. In his introduction to Agenda’ s 21 st Anniversary Ezra Pound Special Issue he says: ‘Without the encouragement and generosity of Ezra Pound, Agenda would not have existed.’ He provides more details in his editorial introduction to Agenda: An Anthology: The First Four Decades 1959-1993 , where he states quite categorically: ‘The founder of Agenda was Ezra Pound,’ and proceeds to give us a potted history of the magazine’s genesis. Having started to read Pound at the age of fifteen, William reviewed Rock-Drill enthusiastically in the Westminster School magazine, The Trifler (of which he was a co- editor – running a magazine was in the family tradition, William’s father having founded English , the magazine of the English Association, in 1936).

DAVIS Under the direction of Dr. Paul Voss ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to realign Richard Crashaw’s aesthetic orientation with a broadly conceptualized genre of seventeenth-century devotional, or meditative, poetry. This realignment clarifies Crashaw’s worth as a poet within the Renaissance canon and helps to dismantle historicist and New Historicist readings that characterize him as a literary anomaly. The methodology consists of an expanded definition of meditative poetry, based primarily on Louis Martz’s original interpretation, followed by a series of close readings executed to show continuity between Crashaw and his contemporaries, not discordance. The thesis concludes by expanding the genre of seventeenth-century devotional poetry to include Edward Taylor, who despite his Puritanism, also exemplifies many of the same generic attributes as Crashaw. Abstract. What is lyric philosophy? The clearest response to that ques- tion is the book-length investigation by Canadian philosopher and poet Jan Zwicky. If philosophy can be defined as thinking in love with clarity, then lyric philosophy might be roughly understood as such thinking in which clarity assumes the form of resonance. Among her paradigmatic lyric philosophers, Zwicky includes (inter alia) the aphorists Herakleitos and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Lyric is distinguished by its deep structure, which is polydimensional and integrative. Epistemically, this structure responds to the gestural root of meaning, which is ineffably manifest in the physical world. hat is lyric philosophy? The clearest response to that question Wconsists in roughly six hundred pages: a book-length meditation that incorporates the philosophical forms of aphorism and dialogue and the musical form of polyphony in an integrative effort to show what it means: namely Lyric Philosophy, by the Canadian philosopher, poet, and musician Jan Zwicky.1 Importantly, criteria for the concept of lyric philosophy are never stipulated in that book, and refraining from such stipulation is connected with the very nature of the investigation. “Lyric meaning,” writes Zwicky, “is proto-linguistic. Both replace the classic physical-metaphysical dichotomy with a focus on the materiality of communication in an emophysical world. Both chart the ways in which libidinal streams combine parts of the self and link the self with other people and objects. These interactions take place in three bandwidths of perception, which are re-arranged by the uncanny object a. This ‘object’ reawakens the affects of the unconscious which infuse the identity formations with new energy. Nancy Cunard, an independently wealthy English heiress, edited Negro Anthology with her African-American lover, Henry Crowder, to whom she dedicated the anthology, and published it at her own expense in an edition of 1000 copies. Cunard’s seminal compendium of prose, poetry, and musical scores chiefly reflecting the black experience in the United States was a socially and politically radical expression of Cunard’s passionate activism, her devotion to civil rights and her vehement anti-fascism, which, not surprisingly given the times in which she lived, contributed to a communist bias that troubles some critics of Cunard and her anthology. Cunard’s account of the trial of the Scottsboro Boys, published in 1932, provoked racist hate mail, some of which she published in the anthology.
