So their marriage refers to the mystical union between the individual soul and the Word of God. Richard Crashaw’s famous Baroque poem “The Flaming Heart” illustrates the expectation and desire that Saint Teresa of Avila has towards her divine spouse. It also describes the raptures that the saint experiences after she has mystical union with God. To Crashaw, St. Teresa’s love to God is very similar to the love between the bride and bridegroom in the Song of Songs. By showing her ardent love, our love towards God has been kindled. My research examines the selected poems for their reimagination of the sacred perceived through attachments to particular places. For these writers, poetry is a constitutive practice, part of a way of life that includes desire for wise participation in the more-than-human community. Taking into account the poets’ critical reflections and historical-cultural contexts, along with a range of critical and philosophical sources, the poetry is examined as a discursive spiritual exercise. It is seen as conjoined with other focal practices of place, notably meditative walking and attentive looking and listening under the influence of ecospiritual eros. -

Title: "SO TO ONE NEUTRAL THING BOTH SEXES FIT": Trans* Theory and 1ih Century English Metaphysical Poetry Dr. Benjamin Saunders In this paper, I utilize an experimental format of incorporating autobiographical narratives of my life as a genderqueer person to segue readers into questions of identity and trans* theory. I then use the tenets of trans* theory to analyze several poems by John Donne, Andrew Marvell, and Richard Crashaw. The Redemptive Act of Reading: Richard Crashaw & the Teresean Liturgy Alexandra Finn-Atkins Dr. Reeder Senior Thesis 13 May 2012 Finn-Atkins 1 In the preface to Catholic Liturgy: It’s fundamental principles, the French Benedictine monk Gaspar Lefebvre considers the liturgy in terms of the relationship between body and soul: Others again, without going so far, are content to look upon the liturgy as simply the organization of exterior and public worship paid by the Church to God – the carrying out in extenso of her rubrics and ceremonies, intended only for priests. To these last we reply that this is indeed the body, the visible part of the liturgy. But we must bear in mind that the liturgy has also a soul, which is invisible and for that reason, alas, too often ignored. This soul is the power of glorifying God and of sanctifying men which these objects, formulas and exterior rites possess.1 Lefebvre explains that the liturgy, generally defined as a form of public worship, also involves a private aspect that is frequently overlooked.2 While the congregation performs the prescribed motions of worship, each individual ought to experience personal transformation and the glorification of God. -

D. 2010 Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto In his “Letter on Humanism,” Martin Heidegger conveys the importance he attributes to poetry when he states: “Language is the house of being” (“Letter” 239). In response to his early Jesuit education, he developed a secular alternative to theology with his existential phenomenology. Theology, poetry, and phenomenology share the basic concern of explaining the foundations of being. For Heidegger, ownership characterizes being in a fundamental way; in Contributions to Philosophy (From Enowning) , he establishes the “Ereignis” (“event of appropriation”) as the foundation of being. Ownership lies at the core of being in his thinking following Being and Time . Yet his philosophy ignores the material circumstances of ownership. By way of a materialist critique of Heidegger’s Idealist phenomenology, I expose how property-relations are encoded in the modern poetry and philosophy of dwelling with the question: who owns the house of being? The answer lies in “self-possession,” which represents historical subjectivity as the struggle for the means of production. Paul Celan, T. S. Eliot, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Paul Valéry are all poets who address the relationship between being and ownership in expressing what Marx and Engels call the “language of real life” in The German Ideology (26). -

Important for seventeenth-century English literary studies, this first scholarly edition of Crashaw’s verse since George Walton Williams’s Complete Poetry of Richard Crashaw (1970) revivifies his unfortunately neglected metaphysical poetry for the twenty-first century. Though Crashaw occasioned some panic among the Anglo-American literary academy in the past century, the grounds on which he was then marginalized, as his new editor Richard Rambuss argues, now seem narrow-minded, arbitrary, and dated. This poet needs serious and sympathetic revaluation which Rambuss greatly facilitates. Crashaw wrote Latin as well as English poetry. Aside from an early vol- ume of Latin poetry on sacred themes (1634), in Crashaw’s own time his verse was published in three overlapping collections, mainly in English but also in Latin: Steps to the Temple: Sacred Poems, with Other Delights of the Muses (London, 1646); an eponymous revised and expanded second edition (London, 1648); and a Catholicized repackaging of Steps to the Temple’s sacred verse, Carmen Deo Nostro (Paris, 1652), newly illustrated with twelve engravings (in- cluding two often attributed to Crashaw himself). He was apparently unable to supervise these editions, for he had fled to the Continent around 1644 to avoid Puritan religious persecution, and died in 1649. Rambuss’s edition focuses on the English verse from both the 1646 and 1652 volumes; the latter presents its poems largely as they appear in the re- vised Steps of 1648, but with numerous significant variants. -

Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY2012 ABSTRACT Imagining Unity: The Politics of Transcendence in Donne, Lanyer, Crashaw, and Milton Jayme M. Yeo "Imagining Unity" investigates how an evolving concept of transcendence in early modem England, influenced by Reformation and counter-Reformation theology, created new ways of responding affectively and philosophically to emerging articulations of national identity in British devotional poetry. My project focuses on a series of politically disruptive moments in the seventeenth century-from the residual trauma of the Protestant Reformation to the Civil War of the 1640's-that troubled England's developing sense of national identity. In the shadow ofthese troubles, devotional poets reworked ideas of transcendence that they had inherited from medieval Catholicism to provide a sense of national cohesion in the midst of a changing political landscape. This dissertation explores transcendence as it is reconceived by four different authors: John Donne's work translates Catholic iconography to symbolize the ascension of a Protestant England; Aemelia Lanyer's poetry appeals to the exclusivity of religious esotericism as a palliative for the actual exclusion of women from political life; Richard Crashaw's writings reinterpret mystical union to rescue sovereignty from failure; and John Milton's work revises transubstantiation to authorize a new republic.
